The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred multiple petitions against its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah, to the party’s National Council for determination.

In a statement issued from its Accra headquarters and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said it had observed “with grave concern” the conduct of Mr Owusu Bempah.

According to the statement, the party’s Secretariat has formally received petitions from members demanding his removal from office. “In line with due process, and considering that his appointment was made upon the recommendation of the National Executive Committee and subsequently approved by the National Council, the matter has been formally referred to the National Council for appropriate consideration and determination,” it said.

The leadership emphasised that the decision was taken to ensure fairness and transparency. “The Party reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency,” the statement added.

Mr Owusu Bempah was appointed Deputy Director of Communications as part of the NPP’s effort to strengthen its media and publicity machinery ahead of the 2024 general elections. Party insiders say the petitions stem from recent internal disagreements over communication strategy, though details of the specific complaints have not been made public.

The National Council is the NPP’s highest decision-making body outside congress and has the mandate to deliberate on such matters. A decision on the petitions is expected after the Council’s next scheduled meeting.

The NPP has urged members to remain calm as the process unfolds.
