Hot SourceThe Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) at the National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the temporary suspension of its indefinite strike, effective immediately.
The decision, communicated in a statement dated 28 June 2025, follows extensive engagements with the National Labour Commission, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the leadership of the union’s mother body.
According to the statement, the suspension is anchored on key agreements reached during the negotiations, particularly regarding the payment of the 20% Operational Support Allowance.
The PSWU indicated that payment of the allowance is scheduled to begin in July 2025. The July and August payments will be handled at the institutional level, while arrears from January to June, along with the September payment and subsequent entitlements, are expected to be processed by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) in September.
“This temporary suspension is a calculated demonstration of good faith on the part of the Union to facilitate the seamless execution of these administrative and financial processes,” the statement read.
The union, however, stressed that the suspension does not imply a withdrawal of its legitimate demands. It cautioned that the industrial action would only be fully and permanently called off upon the complete and satisfactory fulfilment of all outstanding issues.
“All members are therefore directed to report for duty and resume their official duties on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the statement directed.
Leadership also assured members that it would remain vigilant in monitoring the implementation of the agreements and would not hesitate to reactivate the strike should there be any deviation from the timelines.
The statement, jointly signed by the Divisional Secretary, Adu Kyeremeh Kwabena, and the Divisional Chairman, Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghl, called for a unified support from all members.
