NHIA to reduce out-of-pocket payments with realistic tariffs

The Deputy Chief Executive for Operations at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has outlined plans by the Authority to implement updated tariffs for healthcare services and medicines in the coming weeks.

The move, according to Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, is aimed at reducing patients’ out-of-pocket payments.

He said this at a Technical Workshop on New Data and Evidence for Primary Health Care Strengthening in Accra on Thursday.

Dr Djokoto explained that the revised tariffs reflect current economic conditions and are expected to significantly reduce out-of-pocket payments for NHIS members.

He called on healthcare providers to support the initiative and emphasized the importance of accurate facility-level data, including expenditures and operational costs, in shaping the tariffs and guiding strategic purchasing decisions.

He further stressed that the NHIA is committed to expanding coverage and improving access to quality healthcare nationwide, noting that these reforms are part of the Authority’s broader agenda to ensure efficiency, transparency, and financial protection for all Ghanaians.

Speaking at the workshop, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Dr Robert Taliercio, welcomed the reforms, noting that the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare program and the operationalisation of the Network of Practice model mark a pivotal moment for Ghana’s health sector.

“This process demands evidence-informed policymaking and considers the voices of patients, providers, and communities,” he said.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders to discuss how data and evidence can strengthen primary healthcare delivery and support Ghana’s broader health sector transformation agenda.
