Veteran National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Ato Ahwoi, has launched a blistering attack on broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere, accusing him of being a shameless mischief-maker determined to sow confusion within the ruling party.
In an explosive appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Mr Ahwoi, a founding father of the NDC and a former Energy Minister under the late Jerry John Rawlings, dismissed the Good Evening Ghana host as a “biased political operative” masquerading as a journalist.
According to Mr Ahwoi, Adom-Otchere has been “on an anti-NDC crusade for years”, relentlessly attacking the party and its leaders while openly aligning himself with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“He’s a mischief-maker, plain and simple,” Mr Ahwoi fumed. “Paul has never found anything right with the NDC. He’s always taken sides with Akufo-Addo, and he knows it.”
Mr Ahwoi revealed that Adom-Otchere once personally approached him during the NDC administration between 2009 and 2016, begging for a government job.
“He came to my office and asked me to create a position for him,” he said pointedly. “When he didn’t get what he wanted, he turned against us.”
Ironically, Mr Ahwoi noted, Adom-Otchere later found favour under the Akufo-Addo government first as a member of the National Communications Authority (NCA) board chaired by Kweku Sekyi-Addo, and later as chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) board during Akufo-Addo’s second term.
“He’s been rewarded handsomely by the NPP, so he should stay in his lane,” Mr Ahwoi said sharply.
“He should focus on NPP affairs and stop poking his nose into NDC matters.”
Responding to Adom-Otchere’s recent commentary suggesting disquiet within the NDC over succession plans, Mr Ahwoi flatly rejected any notion of internal divisions, describing such talk as “utter nonsense fuelled by mischief”.
“The NDC has its own system and timetable for leadership selection,” he explained. “We will choose our flagbearer one year before the next election, whether in 2027 or 2028. These attempts to create confusion will fail.”
He cited historical precedents to back his claim, recalling how the party united behind the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills despite doubts, and how Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was selected as John Mahama’s running mate amid speculation.
Mr Ahwoi argued that discussions about Mahama’s successor were premature, stressing that the President had served only nine months of his current term.
“President Mahama still has over three years left,” he said. “Let him govern. Paul should shut up and allow the man to work. He never behaved this way when Akufo-Addo was President.”
The NDC elder warned that senior party members would not sit idle while “external actors and political opportunists” tried to derail the party’s internal processes.
“Paul’s antics will not succeed,” Mr Ahwoi vowed. “The NDC will follow its system, make its choices at the right time, and no amount of mischief from Paul Adom-Otchere will change that.”
