Nana Konadu’s return to NDC was underway before her passing – Fiifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has disclosed that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, was in the process of rejoining the party shortly before her passing.

Nana Konadu, who was a founding member of the NDC and later broke away to form the National Democratic Party (NDP), died on Thursday, 23 October 2025.

Speaking in an interview following a delegation to her residence, Fiifi Kwetey revealed that discussions to reintegrate the former First Lady into the NDC fold were far advanced and showed promising signs of reconciliation.

“I wouldn’t say the talks were unsuccessful. I would rather say that the timing was the challenge. Because even on her part, you could clearly see that she was ready,” he said.

The NDC General Secretary noted that the party had long recognised the need to heal old wounds and honour Nana Konadu’s foundational role in shaping its identity and values.

“We have constantly said that with the role she played in forming this party and making it great and strong—despite the difficulties that came along the way—we needed to put those behind us. I am happy that during her time, these efforts started and she embraced them,” he stated.

Fiifi Kwetey paid tribute to the late former First Lady, describing her as a bold and visionary leader whose passion for women’s empowerment and social justice would continue to inspire future generations.

“The party will miss her dearly,” he added.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was known for her strong advocacy for women’s rights and her pivotal role in mobilising grassroots support during the NDC’s formative years.
