The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the public of the illegal distribution and sale of a falsified brand of Ginny non-dairy creamer products.

NAFDAC disclosed that the product is widely distributed and sold across the country, particularly in the northern part of Nigeria, due to its high demand.

Non-dairy creamer is a concoction of many food additives known as coffee creamer or whitener. It is used in food as a substitute for milk powder or to lessen the amount of milk in beverages, including coffee, tea, oatmeal, hot chocolate, and baked goods.

According to NAFDAC, the falsified brands of Ginny non-dairy creamer have been observed to be lagged, with several labelling irregularities indicating non-compliance with NAFDAC’s pre-packaged food labelling guidelines.

NAFDAC stated that the type of ‘creamer’ not specified whether the product is diary or non-diary, the product name which was term ‘Milky’ is indicative of milk ingredients but this is contradictory to the actual product content, and images of cows are misleading as the ingredients do not include a diary.

It added that unregistered products do not comply with the regulatory provisions. The safety and quality of the product are not guaranteed, while the net weight indicated as ‘±35g’ is ambiguous.

The agency, however, urged all its zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and mop up the falsified product within the zones and states.

It also advised all distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the distribution, supply, sale, and consumption of the falsified versions of Ginny Creamer Products.

“All packaged food products must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked,” NAFDAC stated.

Consumers are also advised to report any suspicion of sale of substandard and falsified packaged food, medicines or medical devices, cosmetics, and other regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng
