Hot SourceThe Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a one-week ultimatum to all unlicensed private and public mortuaries and funeral facilities to immediately regularise their operations or face closure.
In a press release dated 22 October, the agency said it has observed that a number of mortuaries and funeral facilities continue to operate without a licence, contrary to Section 55 of the Health Institution and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829).
The Act states that “a person who practices in a facility without registering as a practitioner or fails to license a facility commits an offence and is liable to the payment of a fine or the temporary or permanent closure of the facility.”
MoFFA, which was established under Part Two of Act 829, is mandated to license, control and regulate all facilities connected with the storage, transportation and disposal of human remains.
The agency is advising all operators of facilities and practitioners to take steps to regularise their operations or risk the closure of their facilities.
