Matrix Energy Strengthens Leadership, Appoints Umunna as Deputy GMD

In a decisive move to consolidate its growth trajectory and deepen operational excellence, Matrix Energy Group has appointed Mr. Patrick C. Umunna as its new Group Deputy Managing Director (G-DMD), effective November 3, 2025.

The appointment underscores the Group’s renewed commitment to innovation, efficiency and sustainable profitability across its diverse energy operations, as it positions for the next phase of strategic expansion within and beyond Nigeria.

Umunna, a seasoned corporate leader with more than 27 years of experience spanning banking, energy and financial services, brings a strong track record of transformative leadership.

Before his appointment, he served in senior management roles at Premium Trust Bank and Polaris Bank Limited, where he was instrumental in driving growth, managing large business portfolios and strengthening operational performance.

At Matrix Energy, Umunna will work closely with the Group Chief Executive Officer to execute the company’s strategic agenda — focusing on operational optimisation, value creation, and the expansion of the Group’s footprint across critical sectors of the economy.

Industry observers have said the move reflects Matrix Energy’s proactive approach to leadership renewal at a time when the energy landscape demands adaptability, innovation and bold thinking.

Founded on a vision to deliver reliable energy solutions across Africa, Matrix Energy has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading integrated energy players, with operations spanning petroleum products trading, downstream oil and gas, shipping, storage, and logistics.

The company has been instrumental in bridging supply gaps and strengthening Nigeria’s energy value chain through investment in infrastructure, technology and strategic partnerships.

Welcoming Umunna to the team, the Group’s Corporate Communications Unit, led by Mr. Ibrahim Akinola, described the appointment as “a strategic reinforcement of Matrix’s leadership team to sustain growth momentum and deliver long-term value to stakeholders”.

“The Group is confident that Mr. Umunna’s wealth of experience and leadership acumen will further energise Matrix Energy’s mission to be a preferred energy partner for success,” Akinola stated.

With the appointment, Matrix Energy signals its readiness to accelerate its next phase of growth — one anchored on operational excellence, sustainability and a renewed commitment to powering Africa’s economic development.

    Olawepo-Hashim: I’ll Defend Multiparty Democracy

.Says attempts to kill opposition politics in Nigeria will be resisted

Former presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under grave threat, alleging a coordinated effort by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to cripple opposition politics and impose a one-party civilian dictatorship.
Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement issued from Doha, Qatar, where he is attending the Covenant Altar of Worship Ministry’s First Worship Convention, condemned the Abuja Federal High Court ruling that halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention earlier scheduled for November 15, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
He described the court’s decision as part of a wider strategy to neutralise the PDP and “weaponise the judiciary against multiparty democracy.”
“What happened in court is not an isolated incident. It is a carefully choreographed plot to paralyse the opposition and entrench authoritarian rule,” he said.
The PDP presidential aspirant also decried reports which indicated that former Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Alhaji Sule Lamido, was blocked from purchasing the nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman, calling it a blatant assault on internal party democracy.
He accused “fifth columnists” within the PDP of collaborating, “wittingly or unwittingly,” with forces loyal to the APC to frustrate ongoing reform efforts in the party.
“It is now clear that both external pressures and internal sabotage are being deployed to stop the rebirth of the PDP as a credible alternative and defender of democratic values,” he asserted.
Despite the setbacks, Olawepo-Hashim vowed that committed party loyalists would not allow opposition politics to be extinguished in Nigeria.
“Those celebrating the creeping civilian dictatorship should pause. The true soldiers of democracy are still standing. We will resist every attempt to kill opposition and destroy pluralism in this country.”
He hinted of plans to resume high-level consultations with key party stakeholders on his return to Nigeria, with the aim of rallying “genuine leaders and men and women of conscience” to safeguard democratic freedom.
According to Olawepo-Hashim: “The darkest hour, they say, comes before dawn. A new day will break for Nigeria’s democracy.
He called on members to remain resolute saying “party members must not despair and not faint.”

There was heavy security presence at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday, as the former vice chairman (North Central), Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed, resumed as the party’s acting national chairman.

Mohammed and his supporters had earlier gathered at the FCT office of the PDP, where he addressed them announcing that he will be taking over as the acting national chairman

The national chairman, Amb Illya Damagum’s camp that suspended the National Secretary, National Legal Adviser, Kamalfeem Ajibade, and the National Organising Secretary, Bature Umar, were no where near the PDP office.

Abdulrahman was named as acting national chairman of the PDP by the Samuel Anyanwu – led national working committee (NWC), after it announced the suspension of Damagun and the national publicity secretary, Debo ologunagba.

Police shot tear gas, as some staff of the party tried to evict Anyanwu from office.

Abdulrahman was taken round the PDP office by the embattled national secretary.

In his maiden address, he said, “We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders and members. From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to being an opposition party for over 10 years now at the national level, from being a formidable opposition to a now humbled opposition owing to the unexplainable, unconscionable defections of Governors, Legislators and Council Chairmen, et al.

”I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and instrumentality of very critical stakeholders of this party.

”My job here as Acting National Chairman is simple: ”Heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation.

”Reposition the party and make it Law abiding.

”And to plan an all-inclusive National Convention, and hand over to a properly elected National Working Committee (NWC), after concluding all the outstanding congresses at the Zonal, State, Local Government and Ward levels.

”Hand over this our beloved party back to her true owners, the Nigerian people. I want to assure all PDP faithful, critical stakeholders and Nigerians at large, that a new dawn has come and with it the renaissance of the PDP.

“I cannot do this seemingly difficult job alone, I will need all your support, prayers and genuine commitment to join hands on lifting our party, the PDP upwards.

“Consultations are already ongoing and in due course we will have our NEC meeting.”
