Mahama: I’ll never give up the fight against galamsey

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending illegal mining (galamsey), describing it as a fight for the survival of the nation and not one of convenience.

In a Facebook post, President Mahama stressed that protecting the environment remains a central pillar of his government’s agenda, warning that Ghana cannot pursue development at the expense of its natural resources.

“The fight against illegal mining (galamsey) is not a matter of convenience; it is essential for our survival. We cannot destroy our environment while claiming to build our future,” he wrote.

The President commended journalists, particularly Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group, for their courage in exposing environmental crimes despite personal risks.

Mahama outlined a number of initiatives being implemented to combat illegal mining while creating alternative livelihoods. These include the Tree for Life Reforestation Programme and the recruitment of Blue Water Guards to protect rivers and water bodies.

He also cautioned communities that attack public officials enforcing environmental regulations, stating that firm action would be taken against such acts.

“To communities that attack public officials performing lawful duties, we will take firm action. To our youth, we are creating alternative opportunities, including the National Apprenticeship Programme, to provide you with sustainable jobs,” he said.

President Mahama urged the youth to choose sustainable livelihoods over environmental destruction, reiterating his unwavering stance on the issue.

“I assure you, as your President, that I will never give up this fight against illegal mining,” he added.
