Hot SourcePresident John Dramani Mahama has announced posthumous promotions for three Ghana Armed Forces officers who lost their lives in the 6 August 2025 military helicopter crash, alongside the establishment of a dedicated fund to support the children of all eight victims.
Speaking at the state funeral in Accra on Friday, the President said the promotions were “the highest mark of respect for duty performed even unto death.”
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala has been promoted to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Mensah Addo to Flight Sergeant.
“These are not just symbolic gestures. They represent the rightful place these officers have earned in our Republic’s roll of honour,” the President added, noting that benefits to their families will reflect the new ranks.
He further disclosed that civilian victims of the crash will be recognised at the next National Honours Ceremony.
To secure the future of the victims’ children, government has set up the Children’s Support Fund for the Children of the Victims of the 6th August Helicopter Crash. The fund will cover education, health care and essential living expenses until the children complete tertiary or technical education.
Calling on Ghanaians to uphold the country’s tradition of collective responsibility, the President appealed for contributions from citizens, businesses, professional associations and international partners.
Standard Bank has already credited the account with an initial GHC 500,000. The government will also provide an immediate seed contribution and publish the fund’s operational framework within 30 days.
Quoting the late Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah’s poem to a young boy he once helped, the President said: “You’re not alone. You’ve got me. Always there to share.”
