Hot SourceEight men, have been convicted by the Circuit Court in Accra for assaulting a former Member of Parliament (MP) and two others, during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run at the Methodist Church Polling Station on July 11, 2025.
The victims were, Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and MP for Awutu Senya East; Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); and Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader from Alajo.
The convicts, Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari and Ali Saeed, also known as “Bomba”, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
They were convicted on their own plea, when they appeared before the court presided over by Isaac Addo.
The presiding judge deferred sentencing them until Friday, August 29, 2025.
In the meantime, they have been admitted to bail in the sum of GHC 80,000 each with one surety.
Narrating the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, stated that on June 11, 2025, the complainants, who are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), attended the Ablekuma North re-run of the parliamentary elections.
He said in the course of visiting the polling centres, on reaching the Methodist Church Polling Station, Hawa Koomson and Sanaa were attacked and assaulted by the accused persons.
After they were rescued by the security men at the polling station, the accused persons proceeded to assault Kwei, who was also at the polling centre without any provocation.
The prosecutor said all the complainants were rescued and taken to Odorkor Police Station, and the Regional/CID/AR, where they formally lodged complaints of assault.
“Police Medical Forms were issued to them after which they proceeded to the hospital treatment. The accused persons were subsequently arrested.
They all denied the allegations in their caution statements.
“After investigations, they were charged with the offences and arranged before this honourable court,” the prosecutor told the court.
