International observers have condemned the Guinea-Bissau military’s seizure of power last week, which interrupted the democratic process just as the country awaited results from the 23 November presidential and legislative elections.
In a joint statement issued on 26 November, the African Union Election Observation Mission, ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, and West African Elders Forum expressed deep concern over the armed forces’ announcement, which came while the nation was awaiting official results and shortly after missions had met with the two leading presidential candidates who had committed to accepting the people’s will.
The missions, led by former presidents Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique and Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, described the military’s action as “a blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process and the gains that have been achieved thus far.”
They specifically condemned the arrests of top officials, including those overseeing the electoral process, and demanded their immediate release to allow the country’s electoral process to reach its proper conclusion.
The observer groups called on the African Union and ECOWAS to take necessary steps to restore constitutional order, while urging the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and reaffirming their commitment to supporting the country’s democratic path.
