The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has recognised AngloGold Ashanti and one of its engineers for what it describes as their long-standing technical support to the country’s power transmission system.
The mining firm’s Obuasi and Tarkwa operations, together with Ing. Kisman Eghan, were honoured at GRIDCo’s 2025 Corporate Safety Durbar and Awards Ceremony. The event in Kumasi marked the end of a month-long programme aimed at promoting workplace safety across the organisation.
In his address, GRIDCo’s Director of Technical Services, Ing. Vincent Boachie, said the company’s safety performance this year reflected improved discipline and vigilance among staff. He noted that no major incidents had been recorded.
He said GRIDCo had made progress towards ISO 45001 compliance, strengthened its fire safety systems and broadened training programmes to align the organisation with international best practice.
AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine received the Collaboration Award for its rapid mobilisation and technical assistance following a fire at GRIDCo’s Obuasi Substation in May 2025. The company’s intervention helped protect the transmission network and maintain electricity supply to the area.
Ing. Kisman Eghan, an Energy and Engineering Specialist with AngloGold Ashanti, received the Chief Executive’s Special Award for facilitating engineering support after the incident.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ing. Eghan said both mining and power transmission were high-risk sectors and required strict adherence to safety. He said AngloGold Ashanti remained committed to working with GRIDCo to uphold safety standards and ensure reliable power for mining operations.
He added that electricity reliability and affordability were critical for the long-term success of mining projects, and highlighted AngloGold’s corporate values of safety, respect, integrity, sustainability, excellence and collaboration.
Addressing staff on behalf of GRIDCo’s Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive for Engineering and Operations, Ing. Frank Otchere, warned against complacency around electricity. He said the organisation’s safety protocols must be followed consistently, even when they appeared demanding.
He urged employees to maintain discipline, remain vigilant and use protective equipment at all times to protect both lives and GRIDCo’s industry reputation.
This year’s Safety Awareness Month included a health walk, blood donation exercise, ergonomics assessments, aerobics sessions and an interdepartmental safety quiz. The quiz was won by Isaac Adade from GRIDCo’s Kumasi Operational Area.
The durbar was held under the theme “Revolutionising Occupational Safety and Health: The Role of Technology and Innovation”, coinciding with the International Labour Organisation’s global discussions on workplace safety.
GRIDCo said the event reaffirmed its commitment to a stronger organisational safety culture and to aligning its operations with international standards as it continues efforts to build a safer working environment.
