Gov’t mourns Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings

Government has announced with deep regret and profound sorrow the passing of Ghana’s former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Her Excellency Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.

In an official statement issued by the Presidency and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mrs. Rawlings is said to have passed away on Thursday morning after a short illness.

“Government announces with deep regret and profound sorrow, the untimely passing of former First Lady and Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Her Excellency Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings. Mrs. Rawlings passed this morning after a short illness,” the statement read.

The statement further noted that government extends its deepest condolences to the immediate family of the late former First Lady, describing her death as a great loss to the nation.

Shortly after the announcement, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and eldest daughter of the late Mrs. Rawlings, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, was spotted leaving the Jubilee House.

Her visit to the Presidency came just moments after the official communication on her mother’s passing, drawing the attention of staff and journalists present.

Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings was a trailblazer in women’s empowerment and social transformation in Ghana.

Through the 31st December Women’s Movement, she championed several initiatives that improved the livelihoods of women, particularly in rural communities, and advocated strongly for gender equality and political participation.
