Ghana seals $256m debt deal with UK to boost key projects

Ghana has signed a bilateral debt restructuring agreement with the United Kingdom, marking another significant step in the country’s economic recovery programme.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, representing the Republic of Ghana, confirmed the agreement worth about US$256 million was signed in Accra with His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey.

“This milestone reflects the deepening of our partnership with the United Kingdom,” Forson said, noting that it is Ghana’s third bilateral deal after similar agreements with France and the Export-Import Bank of China.

The minister added that the government is working with UK Export Finance (UKEF) to reinstate funding for a series of priority projects. These include the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulimakom Road, modernisation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, Phase 1 of the Tema–Aflao Road, and the redevelopment of Kumasi Central Market.

Present at the signing were the UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg, the Chief Director of the Finance Ministry, Patrick Nomo, and other senior officials.

The agreement forms part of Ghana’s broader debt restructuring strategy aimed at stabilising the economy and unlocking critical infrastructure development.
