FG Empowers 39,000 MSMEs With N2.5bn in Katsina

No fewer than 39,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Katsina State have received N2.5 billion grants from the Federal Government to resuscitate and enhance their businesses.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who disclosed this at the ninth Expanded National MSME Clinics in Katsina, Tuesday, said the 39,000 MSMEs received different interventions from the government.

He said the Federal Government has introduced numerous support programmes, including the N75 billion MSME intervention fund administered by the Bank of Industry (BoI), which provides N5 million loans to 75,000 MSMEs nationwide at an interest rate of nine per cent per annum.

He added that the Tinubu-led Federal Government has also rolled out a N50 billion Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme to support one million nano-businesses across the 774 local government areas of the country with N50,000 each.

Shettima said: “Likewise, under the N75 billion Manufacturers Fund, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is providing critical financial support to health businesses in the manufacturing sector, pushing the high costs of production, marketing and distribution.

“Eligible businesses can access up to N1 billion in loans at a nine per cent interest rate. And I am pleased to note that so far, over 39,000 MSMEs in Katsina State have benefited from these interventions, receiving a total of about N2.5 billion.

“I am also pleased to announce that His Excellency, President Bola, has approved an unconditional grant of N250,000 for each outstanding MSME exhibiting at today’s clinic. This is a non-repayable grant.”

Earlier, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda announced a six-month post-event mentorship programme for all the entrepreneurs participating in the ninth expanded national MSME Clinics in the state.

He disclosed that the state government has established a N5.5 billion MSME fund, with over N1 billion already disbursed to 701 businesses, making the state a model for enterprise development in northern Nigeria.

Radda said: “This clinic will stand out from all others. I have directed KASEDA to work with SMEDAN, BoI, NITDA, NEPC, SON, FIRS and CAC to provide post-event support to every registered participant. The clinic does not end today.”

He revealed that over 100,000 beneficiaries across the 34 local government areas of the state have received support through KASEDA since 2023.

    Ohajuruka, in a press statement described Kalu’s remarkable performance as a “shining light” in the global and regional Parliaments, citing his legislative prowess and commitment to development.

    He noted that Kalu’s achievements which includes facilitating the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), the University of Medical Sciences, Abia State, Federal College of Education, Police Detective College, and attraction of several infrastructure development projects all in Abia State.

    He also lauded Kalu’s legislative sagacity and accomplishments, which includes the Reserved Seat Bill for women and State Police Bill, which have received national and international support and acclaim

    Ohajuruka who is the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, South East Development Commission (SEDC) urged the public to appreciate Kalu for his service, frankness, dedication and honesty saying that Kalu’s recent remarks on the financial earnings of Abia State should not be misconstrued or taken out of context, rather, it was an honest call for government to do more because to whom much is given much is expected.

    Recall that Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, came under attacks for asking the governor to commend President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for making funds available for infrastructure development, charging him to do more for the people.

    However, the remarks did not go down well with the Abia State Government, including Kalu’s declaration that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will win Abia in 2027 general elections.

    Ohajuruka wondered why the Deputy Speaker, who has attracted so many projects to Abia State and has been having a cordial working relationship with the governor, should be criticized for playing the Oliver twist.

    The former speaker called for caution and restraints, saying that such criticism and attacks against Kalu were unnecessary and counterproductive.

    According to him, “His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Ph.D, CFR, is a pride of the entire Nd’Igbo.

    “He has used his good offices to attract laudable projects to the region in general and Abia State in particular. It will be very ill-advised for anyone or a group of persons to make an effort to malign and disparage a man with such an unparallel legislative pedigree and acumen. It is a bad way of rewarding one of our best legislators per excellence.

    “Aside from being a shining light in the global and regional Parliament, Kalu is also doing well as a presiding officer of the 10th House of Representatives. His legislative prowess is unarguably unmatched. Kalu’s Seats Reserved Bill, State Police Bill, and many other pieces of legislation have not only received national encomiums but are highly rated in the international community as best in the 10th Assembly.

    “Such a man deserves Accolade and not all these needless fights and distractions. Ndi Igbo is not known for this. We are always our brothers’ keeper. Let’s respect and celebrate our own.”

    Ohajuruka also expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to President Tinubu for his extraordinary leadership and love for Ndi Abia.

    He cited the President’s firm commitment, service and support for the people of Abia without discrimination or political bias, saying it has earned him so much respect and admiration

    He further stated that President Tinubu is a true champion of the people who has set a shining example for future leaders to follow.

    “His legacy will continue to inspire and shape our nation’s future, reminding us that servant leadership can make a profound difference in the lives of her citizens”, Ohajuruka said.

    Again, Enugu State Govt Pulls Down Property Used for Kidnapping

    The Enugu State Government, yesterday  demolished yet another building used for kidnapping in the state, an action it said is in line with the laws of the state.

    Security agencies had, during the week, rescued a kidnap victim at the demolished property, a bungalow at Umueze Awkunanaw in Nkanu West LGA of the state, used by the prime suspect, Igwenagu Ogbodo, and his gang for holding victims captive.

    Ogbodo and some of his gang members, however, escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds when security agencies stormed the property.

    Speaking to newsmen during the demolition, the Council Chairman of Nkanu West LGA, Hon. John Ogbodo, commended Governor Mbah for consistently demonstrating political will in the war against insecurity.

    “The prime suspect and his gang kidnapped the person and brought him here. He was rescued and his vehicle recovered. Some arms and ammunition were equally recovered.

    “I thank His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his political will and demonstration of capacity in line with what he told Ndi Enugu that any house that harbours criminals or is used to aid criminality will be demolished.” 

    “That is exactly what is happening here today and it is in line with the laws of Enugu State.

    “This is not the first house to be demolished in Enugu by this administration, neither is it the second nor the third. But this is the first one to be demolished in Nkanu West, and I know this is going to be a deterrent to other criminal elements.

    “I urge every community and Presidents-General to be very mindful of people around them. They should keep an eye on the people and report any suspicious movement to security agencies.

    “Again, I want to use this opportunity to advise anyone who has a property in Enugu State to be mindful of his or her tenants and any activities ongoing in their property. This is because any house used to harbour criminality like kidnap victims stands demolished,” he stated.

    He said the demolition would serve as a deterrent to the remaining criminals in the state, as there was no hiding place for them given the level of technology and manpower deployed by the governor to stamp out insecurity and criminality from Enugu State.

    “The guy who did this is still on the run, but I know that Enugu State Government has the capacity and the equipment to capture him.

    “Others who are into criminality should know that there is no hiding place in Enugu State of today because the arm of the government will catch up with them,” he concluded.

    Some community members, who witnessed the demolition, testified to the suspect’s criminal ways and antecedents, noting that he was an ex-convict.

    Ikechukwu Amos, who spoke to newsmen, said: “I can’t deny it, he is a criminal. I am their elder and I know how all of them behave. We have been advising him, but he refused. You have seen the resultant effect of his unholy character.

    “This same boy returned from prison not too long ago. Since then, he has been maintaining bad company, using this place for all manner of illicit activities like smoking Indian hemp and other hard substances. I am not surprised that something of this nature will happen, and it has happened.”

    Another indigene of Umueze Awkunanaw, Edeh Chidera Kingsley, also spoke about the prime suspect’s criminal records: “Any young man who doesn’t want to work to get money but chooses kidnapping should face the music.

    “Fela, as he is also known, is a lazy man. If you call him for work, he would say that he would not go. He finds pleasure in drinking.”

    The Councilor of the ward, Uchenna Jideofor, thanked the governor for putting into effect the harsh measures prescribed by the laws of Enugu State against kidnapping, describing the demolition as a welcome development for the people and leaders of Umueze Awkunanaw.

    “The guy is notorious in criminal activities. In my first tenure, I made sure that some of them were remanded in prison, but after everything he was later released by some people from the community. And any time they come back, people will be witnessing insecurity in the community. The guy is involved in so many things.

    “This morning, I had a confrontation with the neighbours, telling them that they are not doing us good by not giving us information on what is happening. But what is happening here now will serve as a lesson to others that have chosen the fast lane,” he said.
