Hot SourceThe family of the late Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has paid glowing tribute to his lifelong devotion to education, public service, and national development.
At the burial service for the other six victims of the recent helicopter crash in Accra, a biography read on behalf of the family recalled how his remarkable journey of sacrifice and service took shape as far back as 2002, when he assumed the presidency of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
In that role, he championed bold educational reforms, playing a decisive role in the passage of the GETFund Act — a policy credited with transforming access to education for thousands of young Ghanaians.
“His work in medicine reflected his compassion from volunteering after the tragic May 9 Accra sports stadium disaster, to leading national immunization campaigns and serving patients at the 37 military hospital. His service was tireless and selfless,” the biography noted.
From the consulting room to the corridors of power, Dr. Boamah’s career was marked by distinction. He served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, and later as Minister for Communications. In those capacities, he rolled out transformative initiatives — establishing the National Computer Emergency Response Team, launching the Child Online Protection Framework, and through the Master’s scholarship scheme, empowering over 41,000 students.
On the global stage, his leadership extended Ghana’s influence. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly, served as Vice Chairman of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development, and contributed to shaping strategies on climate change and public health.
“Politically, he was a strategist as the first combined director of elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He introduced systems and strengthened electoral processes.
He was appointed Minister of Defense where he worked to improve the welfare of military personnel and ensure transparency in defense operations. “We applaud your excellence, rest in peace,” the family said in closing.
