The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has handed over the site for the construction of a Twin Border Post (TBP) between Jendema in Sierra Leone and Bo Waterside in Liberia marking a major step towards strengthening regional integration and trade facilitation in West Africa.
The symbolic ceremony, held on 22 November 2025, was led by the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, who headed a high-level delegation from both countries.
The event also included the laying of the foundation stone to officially signal the commencement of the project.
The construction, awarded to a contracted firm, is expected to be completed within twenty-four months.
Fully financed by the ECOWAS Commission, the Twin Border Post forms part of the organisation’s Vision 2050 agenda, which prioritises the free movement of people and goods, enhanced economic cooperation, and expanded regional commerce.
According to ECOWAS officials, the Jendema–Bo Waterside project is a crucial component of the regional transport facilitation programme, designed to reduce transit delays, streamline cross-border operations, and improve the overall experience for travellers and traders.
Once completed, the facility is expected to boost economic activity and deepen social ties between border communities in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The initiative will also strengthen connectivity along the Praia–Dakar–Abidjan corridor, a vital route for trade and mobility across the sub-region.
The Jendema site in Sierra Leone covers 81,050.822 square metres (20.26 acres) and consists mainly of sparse vegetation, while the Bo Waterside site in Liberia spans 73,250 square metres (18.10 acres).
The ECOWAS Commission says the project reflects its continued commitment to building modern infrastructure that supports regional growth, stability, and integration.
