Court-ordered Kpandai rerun sparks street protest by NPP youth

A decision by the Commercial Division of the Tamale High Court ordering a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary elections has been met with fierce resistance from local youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who poured onto the streets on Tuesday to register their anger.

The ruling, which follows an election petition challenging the 2024 parliamentary results, has ignited strong reactions in the constituency, with supporters of the incumbent MP, Mathew Nyindam, describing it as a betrayal of the electorate’s will.

Protesters, clad in the party’s signature colours and brandishing placards with inscriptions such as “Respect Our Votes” and “Nyindam Won Legitimately,” marched through the town’s major streets. The demonstration brought commercial activities in parts of Kpandai to a temporary standstill as the youth chanted slogans against the court’s directive.

The aggrieved youth argue that the court failed to account for what they term the overwhelming and legitimate mandate given to Mr. Nyindam, whom they insist won the election with a clear and convincing margin.

According to the protesters, the results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) were a true reflection of the will of the people of Kpandai. They contend that the order for a fresh poll is not only unnecessary but politically motivated.

Some leaders of the protest accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of instigating the legal challenge out of an inability to accept defeat.

The Kpandai NPP youth organizer, Joseph Laado, warned that the ruling, if not addressed, could escalate political tensions in the area.

He called on national authorities, including the leadership of the NPP, to intervene urgently to protect the will of the people.

“To order a rerun without what we see as compelling and concrete evidence of electoral malpractice sets a very dangerous precedent for our democracy,” Laado stated. “We are appealing for calm, but we are also demanding that justice is served.”

The situation in Kpandai remains tense as stakeholders await the next steps following the controversial court ruling.
