Concerns of Rising Cases of Mental Health Disorder among Youth

*Experts advocate government intervention, recommend physical exercise

Sunday Ehigiator

Psychiatric experts have raised the alarm over rising cases of economic-induced mental disorder amongst Nigerian youth, thereby calling for quick intervention by the government.

The experts also stressed the need for emotional support while recommending physical exercise as part of ways to curb the situation.
According to the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), the most pressing issue concerning mental health in Nigeria was the shortage of mental health professionals.

Only about 200 psychiatrists and 1000 psychiatric nurses serve over 200 million people in Nigeria, whereas the standard practice is for one psychiatric doctor to care for 10,000 patients, the association revealed.

However, speaking with THISDAY, the Head of Department (HOD), Occupational Therapy, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Lawrence Nwankwo, pointed out that Nigeria’s current economic situation “has caused stress, affecting the mental health of many, especially young adults.”

He disclosed that, “there’s a rising rate of youth and young adults dealing with mental disorders, likely linked to economic hardship and trauma.”

According to Nwankwo, “some youth have turned to wishful thinking, illegal means of survival, and hard drugs to cope with their frustrations.

“The pressure to make ends meet and the weight of their struggles have taken a devastating toll on their mental health. The alarming rate at which this is happening demands urgent attention and action from all concerned stakeholders.”

Speaking further, Nwankwo noted that, “Mental illness, we all know, is a medical condition which affects our thinking, emotions, and behaviours. Also, it’s a condition that involves changing a person’s feelings.

“When mental illness is mentioned, many people dismiss it, saying, ‘That won’t happen to me’ But the reality is, mental illness can affect anyone, just like diabetes, heart disease, or HIV/AIDS. Medication can help manage symptoms, but it’s essential to address the root cause.

“Mental illness often arises from an imbalance in the brain, caused by over-stressing or overworking.

“Mental disorders can stem from a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors, including child abuse, trauma, neglect, social isolation, loneliness, and economic challenges.

Also speaking with THISDAY, a Psychiatric Nurse at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Mr. Rabiu Opeyemi, revealed that there has been a rise in the number of young people seeking mental health services.

This, he said was “a stark testament to the economic hardships they face.”

“Compared to two years ago, there has been a drastic increase in the number of youth requiring care. Shockingly, nine out of 10 patients with mental disorders at our facility are young people.

“The primary cause of their mental health struggles is substance abuse, triggered by frustration and desperation. Many have turned to illegal means of survival, such as fraud, due to the inability to secure a decent living despite having a degree.

“This downward spiral often leads to drug abuse, which further erodes their mental stability. The economic factor is, therefore, a major contributor to the mental health crisis affecting Nigerian youth,” he added.

Furthermore, Opeyemi pointed out that mental stability was not a destination, but rather a continuous process.

“It’s a journey that requires ongoing effort and attention, as it’s not something that can be achieved once and then left unchanged. Instead, it’s a dynamic state that can fluctuate over time, influenced by various factors such as life experiences, relationships, and personal growth.

“It’s when an individual struggles to maintain a balance in their mental state, and can’t cope to a reasonable extent, that their internal struggles begin to manifest outwardly.

“At this point, the emotional turmoil they’re experiencing internally starts to affect their behavior, mood, and interactions with others, making their mental health struggle more visible.

“Every individual faces internal battles, and it’s the ability to remain calm and composed amidst these inner storms that defines our emotional resilience.

“This capacity to manage our internal struggles is what makes us appear grounded and stable to others. Conversely, when we’re unable to cope with our inner turmoil, it can manifest externally, revealing the depth of our emotional struggles.

“Also, when it comes to mental health, it’s essential to consider the genetic makeup of individuals. Our genetic blueprint, passed down through generations, can play a significant role in our mental well-being.

“If there’s a history of mental illness in a family, even if it’s several generations ago, the genetic predisposition can remain dormant, only to resurface in future generations. This is because genes can be rewritten and re-expressed over time, making a previously recessive gene become dominant again.

“This genetic factor can also explain why two people may respond differently to the same situation or substance. For example, two friends may use the same substance, but one, who has a family history of mental illness, may experience severe adverse effects, while the other may not.

“Chronic stress, like traumatic life experiences, can also increase our risk of developing mental illness. For example, someone in Nigeria’s current economic climate may be bottling up their emotions and struggling to cope. If they then experience a significant loss, such as a loved one, money, or property, it can disrupt their emotional balance.

“What’s often overlooked is that mental health is closely tied to the interactions of different chemicals in our body. Our ability to remain calm and composed is influenced by chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. When these chemicals are out of balance, it can affect our mental well-being.

“The state of the economy also plays a significant role in the current mental health crisis among Nigerians, particularly the youth. As a social determinant of mental health, economic instability is a substantial contributor to mental stress,” he added.

Regarding solutions, Nwankwo noted, “Prevention is key in managing mental illness. Strategies like promoting mental health awareness by governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), addressing risk factors, and providing access to supporting services can make a significant difference.

“While there’s no sure way to prevent mental illness, taking steps to control symptoms and reduce risk factors can help.

“To combat this, exercise and rehabilitation programs for those struggling with substance abuse and mental illness are essential. These programs can help individuals abstain from harmful substances and develop healthy habits.”

Also, proffering solutions, Opeyemi noted that, “To address the mental health crisis in Nigeria, we need to focus on the actions of those around individuals struggling with their mental health. It starts with actively checking in on each other, providing emotional support and encouragement to family and friends, regardless of our financial situations.

“The government also has a crucial role to play. Establishing more psychiatric hospitals and mental health facilities is essential to address the shortage of mental health services in Nigeria.

“Creating meaningful employment opportunities is also vital, as unemployment is a significant contributor to mental health issues among young people. By providing jobs and economic stability, we can reduce the pressure that leads to mental health struggles.

“Lastly, implementing social welfare programs and family support systems, similar to those in other countries, can provide a safety net for individuals and families affected by mental health issues.”

Okpebholo: Ighodalo, PDP’s Appeal will Crash at Appeal Court

    Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo’s appeal will crash at the Court of Appeal.

Governor Okpebholo said this while speaking at Okaijesan Town Hall, Irrua, venue for the celebration of his election tribunal victory hosted by Edo Central leaders.

The governor, who thanked Edo people for their support and prayers, assured them that his administration would continue with the current pace of developmental strides.

He noted that Ighodalo and the PDP have declared their intention to challenge the verdict of the election petition tribunal ruling, which gave him and his party victory last Wednesday.

Governor Okpebholo said Ighodalo and PDP are both free to appeal the ruling, as he assured them that they would fail at the Appeal Court.
“The opposition party has been talking and shouting, but Edo people spoke very clear and loud with their votes on September 21, 2024. Edo people voted for the right person in Senator Monday Okpebholo. The people will speak again when the time is right.

“We have defeated them at the Tribunal, and they said they want to appeal the ruling. If they like, let them appeal and even get to the Supreme Court. We will defeat them.

“They have stolen enough money from Edo State. So, they are wasting the money on court cases. If they like, let them spend the whole money they stole from the people. They will never steal Edo people’s mandates given to me and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the September 21st governorship election.”
Governor Okpebholo revealed plans by his administration to develop Esan land through road infrastructure, noting that his administration has awarded a contract to dualise the old road from Ekpoma to Ubiaja.

“As we won this election, the first thing we did was to make sure our roads were motorable across Edo State. If you come to Enewa now, it’s looking like Abuja, as we are putting our efforts to ensure we have good roads to boost economic activities.

“I know the problem of Edo State and Esan land. I have already awarded the old road from Ekpoma to Ubiaja to be dualized. There will be much space to enable vehicles to pass freely without hitting each other. When completed, this road will boost economic activities in the area.

“I am an Edo man, an Esan man, and I know the problem of Esan people. Today, I came to tell you people that the tribunal has given us victory again after the September 21st governorship election.

“The people have spoken, and by the grace of God very soon, what we promised our people, they will start enjoying it. The promise like the soft loans, our people will soon start getting the money. They will soon start to enjoy it. It will start happening in less than two weeks. The money is ready. Names are being compiled for the interested people who want the loan.”

In his address to Esan people, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, said God gave Edo people double victory in the election of September 21st governorship and in the election petition tribunal ruling.

He noted that Governor Monday Okpebholo, who won the governorship election, has been affirmed as the true elected Governor by the election petition tribunal in Abuja.

“God gave us double victory on Wednesday at the tribunal judgment. We are grateful to God Almighty and the people of Edo State for their continuous prayers and support.”

Leader of Arewa community in Esan land, Bawa Umar, commended Governor Okpebholo for his efforts in ensuring peace, stability, and development in Edo State after the Uromi killings.

He noted that his visit to Kano State to condole with the governor speaks volumes of his personality as a gentleman and a man of peace.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was yesterday returned unopposed as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State.

This is just as the governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Obiora Okonkwo has withdrawn from the race for the governorship ticket of the party in the state.

Meanwhile, a former Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu emerged as the candidate of Labour Party (LP) for the governorship election.

APGA held its governorship primary election at the Alex Ekwueme Square, in Awka, where Soludo stood as a lone contestant.

Announcing the results, the returning officer for the election, Hon Uche Nwegbo, said: “Total delegates for this election is 3,260; total accredited delegates is 3,175; total votes cast is 3,172, while four votes were invalid.

The governor in his speech accepted the nomination, while also assuring that he will continue to work hard to ensure that he does not fail members of the party and the people of Anambra State.

He said: “I want to say that I am humbled by this historic display of solidarity to be able to fly the flag of our party again, and I want to say that I accept this nomination wholeheartedly.

“Anambra keeps rising with the progressive leadership that we have had through APGA, and I will continue to appreciate the leadership of the party.
“I appreciate the members of our party and the INEC observers. I do not think that we have ever had this kind of peaceful election where everything was orderly and in one hour everyone was able to cast their votes,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, the governor also announced his deputy as his running mate immediately.

He said: “In 2017, I gave a lecture which I titled ‘If it is not broken, why mend it’, and it became popular. Today I want to say that I am renominating Dr Onyeka Ibezim as my deputy governorship candidate for the election. If it is not broken, why mend it? I want to say that the battle has only begun.”
In a related development, Moghalu defeated his rival, John Nwosu at the LP primary election conducted yesterday in Awka.

The former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored a total of 573 votes to defeat his only contestant, Nwosu, who got 19 votes.

Speaking after emerging as the party’s candidate, Moghalu said contesting against the incumbent, Governor Soludo, would not be a tea party, adding however that defeating him is doable.

Moghalu promised the delegates and the people of Anambra State that he will not betray the confidence they bestowed in him.

Meanwhile, the APC governorship primary at Dora Akunyili Women’s Development centre was billed to begin at 9am, but as at 7pm last night, the event was yet to commence, while delegates were said to be undergoing accreditation in undisclosed hotels in Awka, the state capital.

THISDAY gathered that earlier in the day, there was a fracas at one of the accreditation points, with thugs hired by one of the contestants, inflicting injuries on several delegates in an attempt to hijack the process.

Three people – Sir Paul Chukwuma, Hon. Chuma Umeoji and now Prof. Okonkwo.

Those who were still in the race last night include: Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, Johnbosco Onunkwo and Hon. Edozie Madu.

While Chukwuma cited the existence of some unprogressive elements within the party as reason for his withdrawal and resignation from the party, Okonkwo cited violence, which could endanger his supporters if he continued, as the reason for his withdrawal.

In his withdrawal letter which was made available to THISDAY Okonkwo said: “This decision to withdraw from the race was a difficult but necessary one because of some developments that are inconsistent with my principles and values. The project is not worth risking the lives of my supporters among other reasons.”
