Chris Akoh Wins Best Actor in New York

Chris Akoh has won the Best Actor award at The Hipster Wall Screening Soirée in New York for his role in ‘Breakfast Over Dinner’, the debut film from M.O Studios and producer Mimi Ojieh. The event was organised by the African Diaspora community and students and alumni of the New York Film Academy.

In his acceptance remarks, Akoh thanked The Hipster Wall, the New York Film Academy, and the African Diaspora. “I feel honored. It’s a blessing to be inspired and a greater blessing to inspire others. I mean, this is only the beginning- we’re just getting started and I’m beyond geared to do even more. Big love to The Hipster Wall, New York Film Academy and the African Diaspora for this recognition. Long Live African Cinema.”

‘Breakfast Over Dinner’, directed by Ademola Adebisi and written by Jemimah Amonahini, examines female infidelity from the perspective of Eric, Akoh’s character.

“The first time I read the script, I found it interesting – in the sense that it’s barely ever portrayed when ‘men’ are the victims of infidelity.

“It’s a story of love, betrayal and the monster it creates when trust has been breached. I had to put myself in Eric (the character)’s shoes and interpret that to screen with a bit of desperation and toxicity to make this character come to life – and as you know, performing isn’t just about action but also reaction to what is heard or seen” he said.

Akoh credited the chemistry with his co‑star, Ejiro Onojaife, a nominee of the AMVCA 2024. “I’d be wrong not to give a very special shout out to the talent that is Ejiro Onojaife, my on-screen partner, our synergy was definitely a match made in heaven.

” Akoh also recently received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Filmjoint Awards 2025.

    Lagos Commissioner Declares State Has 1.3% Malaria Prevalence

    The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said that Lagos is well on track to achieve malaria pre-elimination status with a prevalence rate currently at 1.3 per cent.

    The commissioner made this assertion during an event yesterday organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Society for Family Health and Goodknight Nigeria, to marked the Y2025 World Malaria Day,  themed: ‘Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite’, with a vibrant awareness walk and a strategic stakeholders and media engagement aimed at galvanising action towards malaria elimination.

    “Lagos is now at 1.3 per cent  malaria prevalence and fast approaching pre-elimination as defined by the WHO. 

    “Lagos has transitioned from 15 per cent malaria prevalence in 2010 to just three per cent  in 2023. Now, as of March-April 2025, the most recent data shows that we are at an encouraging 1.3 per cent prevalence rate,” declared Abayomi. 

    “This means Lagos is clearly on the path to malaria pre-elimination, a historic milestone in our public health journey,” he added.

    Describing malaria as a vector-borne disease transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito, the commissioner emphasised the importance of accurate diagnosis and the use of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) for confirmed cases. 

    “Early detection and correct treatment not only protect the infected person but prevent further transmission of the parasite to others,” he explained, stressing the need for citizens to trust malaria test results and avoid over-treatment.

    He noted that despite the downward trend in malaria cases, the misuse of anti-malarial drugs remains prevalent. 

    “Data shows that even with only three per cent testing positive, over 50 per cent of patients with fever are still being treated for malaria. This must change,” Abayomi warned, calling for intensified public enlightenment and responsible prescribing by health providers.

    He further noted that vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children under five must remain a key focus. 

    “Their immune systems are either underdeveloped or compromised. We must ensure that every case of fever is properly tested and every confirmed case is properly treated, especially in these groups.” 

    He also highlighted the state’s partnership with the World Health Organisation, Federal Ministry of Health, and Pharmacy Council of Nigeria under the IMPACT Project as critical to Lagos’s push toward malaria elimination.

    The commissioner highlighted Lagos State’s 15-year commitment to the National Malaria Strategic Plan and acknowledged the roles played by previous Health Commissioners and dedicated public health workers. 

    “This trajectory of success has been built through consistent testing, proper treatment, and robust data tracking,” he noted.

    At World Bank/IMF Spring Meeting, Shettima Makes Case for Nigeria’s HCD 2.0 Agenda

    .Canvasses evidence-based interventions, stronger global partnerships in education, health, labour sectors

    Vice President Kashim Shettima has clamoured for stronger international collaboration to advance Nigeria’s Human Capital Development 2.0 (HCD 2.0) strategy.
    He reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to positioning human potential at the heart of national development.
    Speaking virtually at a high-level roundtable on the sidelines of the 2025 World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings at the weekend, Shettima said the success of HCD 2.0 depends on data-driven, evidence-based interventions and sustained political will.
    The HCD 2.0 programme is designed to elevate Nigeria’s Human Capital Index (HCI) and equip it to face both national and global challenges, including climate change and digital transformation.
    The Vice President pointed out that the meeting was necessitated by the urgency to invest in the Nigerian people and by the recognition that true national wealth is found not in natural resources, but in human potential.
    According to him: “This meeting, for us, is not just another item on our global agenda. It is a continuation of a journey whose beginnings I had the privilege of witnessing about seven years ago. True national wealth is found not in natural resources, but in human potential.
    “We will offer our HCD 2.0 Strategy the political backing it deserves to be the priority of our nation, and President Bola Tinubu, has never wavered on this”.
    Shettima reiterated the federal government’s determination to ensure the continuity and deepening of the HCD agenda.
    His words: “Government is a continuum. Nowhere is this truer than in programmes that demand patience, vision, and long-term commitment—programmes such as our Human Capital Development programme”.
    He revealed that under HCD 2.0, six priority indicators from the health, education, and labour force sectors have been selected as “quick wins” to guide policy interventions and track measurable progress.
    “We have carefully curated priority indicators and an HCD Dashboard to track them. This allows us to make informed policy decisions and measure our progress against tangible benchmarks,” he said.
    The Vice President also reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to remain transparent and results-oriented to achieve measurable outcomes.
    “We will continue to hold ourselves accountable and press forward toward our bold goal to elevate Nigeria among the top 80 countries in Human Capital Index rankings,” he said.
    Shettima also called on the World Bank and other development partners to support the availability of disaggregated, state-level Human Capital Index (HCI) data to enable more targeted interventions.
    Stressing the need for equity and inclusiveness in implementing the HCD 2.0 strategy, he said, “We are leaving no sub-national in Nigeria behind. Some of the states have already set a template for the others, having localised the HCD strategies to align with the peculiarities of their people while, of course, aligning them with the national strategy.”
    The World Bank representatives at the meeting committed to strengthening the bank’s partnership with Nigeria to improve the country’s Human Capital Index and proposed senior-level stakeholder engagement to identify optimal areas for technical support.
    The session featured key stakeholders from the World Bank, including Executive Director, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed; Regional Director for Human Development in the Western and Central Africa, Trina Haque; Senior Social Protection Specialist and Regional Task Team Leader, Africa West & Central region, Tina George, and Chief Economist for Human Development in the World Bank Group, Norbert Shady.
    The Nigerian delegation included the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President/ Chair of the HCD Core Working Group, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia and Special Adviser to the President on National Economic Council & Climate Change/National Coordinator of HCD programme, Rukaiya El-Rufai.
    There were also several speeches from representatives of Nigerian state governments, including Akwa Ibom and Lagos, as well as representatives of other local and international development organisations.
