Reasons have emerged on why Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpeholo, restored Dr. Coulsdon Oahimire as Executive Secretary of State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA).

Governor Okpebholo suspended Dr. Oahimire following petition of misappropriation of fund.

Sources from the state government, said the petitioner claimed Oahimire misappropriated money from UNICEF and other donor agencies meant for immunisation programme and training which has to do with life support programmes.

A petitioner from the agency had alleged that the money was collected from the Basic Health Support fund to finance the training of medical doctors, nurses and community Health Extension workers and consequently, was suspended by the governor in a letter signed by Secretary to State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor.

However, it was gathered that the committee set up to investigate the allegations raised in the petition absolved Oahimire of any wrong doing.

The source said, “Investigation was carried out into the allegations and a panel was set up. The suspended Executive Secretary was exonerated by the panel.”

When approached for reaction, Oahimire said he owed no grudges against the petitioner and that he has resolved to work with him being a staff of the agency in accordance with the law.

He thanked Governor Okpebholo and all those who played major role towards the investigation and his reinstatement as the Executive Secretary of Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency.

In his new role, he will steer affairs of the business across 25 countries in CWAR.

The Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) in Nigeria has called on African leaders and the global community to act decisively against the growing scourge of insecurity, displacements, and mass killings across the continent.

The call came as the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and Galaxy Backbone signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a move to improve policing through smart police stations nationwide.

The Registrar of the Institute, Dr. Francis Origa, made the call during a press conference in Abuja to mark the 2025 ‘World Refugee Day on June 20’.

Origa lamented the worsening humanitarian crises driven by unchecked violence, bad governance, and systemic neglect.

He explained that the scale of suffering in conflict-affected regions, particularly in Nigeria, demands leadership that prioritises people and upholds human dignity above political expediency.

“The insecurity we see across Nigeria and Africa is an undeniable driver of displacement, hunger, and human suffering. This day is not just about remembrance, it’s a call to action,” he said.

The event also kickstarted the official opening of nominations for the Pan-African Humanitarian Leadership Award (TPAHLA) 2025, themed, “Honouring Heroes, Forging Forward.” 

The award aims to recognise individuals and institutions making outstanding contributions to refugee welfare, peacebuilding, and humanitarian innovation across the continent and Africans in the diaspora.

Origa stated that TPAHLA was founded to spotlight Africa’s unsung heroes, who are advocating for peace, sheltering displaced families, condemning ethnic cleansing, and building grassroots solutions to crises often ignored by mainstream platforms.

“TPAHLA is our way of recognising those working day and night from researchers and policy advocates to community builders and spiritual leaders who keep the flame of hope burning for millions of displaced people,” he added.

According to him, “This year’s award ceremony, he said is scheduled for October 15–19, 2025, in Abuja and is expected to host over 500 delegates from more than 30 African countries. 

Meanwhile, Galaxy Backbone (GBB) and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate and deploy technology for the creation of smart police stations across Nigeria. 

Speaking after signing the MoU, the Managing Director of GBB, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, emphasised the importance of the collaboration which will enhance digitallised policing.

“Today’s agreement represents more than a partnership—it reflects a shared vision for a smarter, more resilient, and inclusive Nigeria.

“Our collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund brings cutting-edge technology into the heart of Nigeria’s security architecture through the deployment of smart police stations.

“These initiatives reflect our firm commitment to innovation, trust, and nation-building,” he said.

Speaking further, he said that under the terms of the agreement, GBB would provide high-speed fibre connectivity, cloud platforms, and secure digital infrastructure to support the deployment of smart police stations.

“These stations will be equipped with advanced ICT tools to enhance real-time communication, surveillance, data sharing, and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.

“The partnership is expected to significantly improve public safety outcomes by enabling more data-driven decision-making, improved incident response times, and greater transparency in law enforcement.

“This initiative reinforces Galaxy Backbone’s strategic role as the digital backbone of government operations, enabling secure, interoperable platforms that support innovation, governance, and national development.

“The agreement with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund is a bold step toward building a more secure and technologically advanced Nigeria,” Adeyanju said.

The Executive-Secretary of NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, in his remarks noted that, “this initiative is part of broader efforts to modernise police force and enhance its effectiveness in maintaining law and order.”

He also disclosed that “this partnership would digitalise police stations across all geopolitical zones, and it will introduce digital systems for collecting and sorting data as well as connecting police stations to one another

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the Strategic Board of the Nutrition 774 Initiative, describing it as a decisive step by the President Bola Tinubu administration to address the malnutrition crisis threatening lives and development across Nigeria.

According to him, the new board is a war room assembled to win the battle against malnutrition in every corner of the country.

Speaking weekend during the inauguration of the board at the State House in Abuja,  Shettima said malnutrition is a national emergency that poses both health and security threats to Nigeria and requires immediate, coordinated action across all 774 local government areas.

“This Strategic Board is not a ceremonial committee; it is a war room, assembled to win the battle against malnutrition in every corner of this country,” the vice-president said.

Urging members of the newly inaugurated board to treat their appointment as a call to urgent national duty, Shettima said: “This is not a tea-drinking exercise. This is a national call to duty. A race against time. A mission to save lives and safeguard our future.

“We are counting on our state governors to drive implementation at scale, and on our local government chairmen who, being closest to the people, hold the keys to reaching the grassroots.”

He declared that the Nutrition 774 Initiative is President Tinubu administration’s “bold answer to a quiet emergency” that affects homes, schools, hospitals and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the country.

“A nation that neglects the physiological needs of its people, particularly the most vulnerable, flirts with instability. Because a malnourished population is an unproductive one, and an unproductive population drags down the wheels of progress,” he warned.

The vice-president explained that the Nutrition 774 Initiative is “designed to harmonise what has been scattered, to end duplication by embracing coordination, and to build a single, unified framework that allows us to align, act and deliver measurable impact”.

Also speaking, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, commended the vice-president for championing the food security and nutrition initiative, saying such programmes will reduce poverty and enhance social cooperation.

According to him, “We thank you, Your Excellency, for your leadership and what you are doing. There are issues that ministries and the entire MDAs ought to deal with, but you have elevated them to this level under your supervision and leadership. It’s commendable, and we pray that God will continue to protect you and reward you.

“Of course, it is not surprising because on Democracy Day, when I had the opportunity to speak, I reminded the gathering that you have experienced what happens when it goes wrong. You grew up in a peaceful Borno, and then it all went wrong for a combination of reasons. You knew how tough it was to turn things around, but luckily, you did.

“So, I believe when you are doing these things in respect of nutrition and food security, you are doing so from the point of view of your blessed leadership because you have a reckoning with history. We are lucky that you’re leading these efforts.”

On her part, the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, while applauding the initiative, called for the empowerment of women, observing that it is an issue of poverty in a country where the majority of the households are female-headed and children-headed due to crises that have claimed the male heads of family.

“So, you find a home that is being headed by an eleven-year-old because they have lost both parents. How do they feed? I think it’s an economic issue, and we have to come out strongly. So, as part of this plan, I would like you to address issues of economic empowerment for women,” she stated.

Also, the Chairman, House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Chike Okafor, lauded the initiative as a right step in the right direction, assuring the audience that the nutrition programme has all the backing and support of the National Assembly.

“What this initiative is all about is taking it down to the communities, and I want to summarise by saying that you have all the legislative backing at the National Assembly. For us, it is an honour to be a part of this initiative, and we will give all our support and everything that needs to be done to ensure that it is a success,” the lawmaker stated.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health (Office of the Vice-President), Mrs Uju Anwuka, said that as Nigeria grapples with a critical malnutrition crisis, there is a need for urgent and sustained intervention.

Pointing out that malnutrition is a national emergency that undermines the nation’s human capital development, she said the Nutrition 774 supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Tinubu administration “by investing in human capital, ending hunger and poverty, empowering youth and women, and ensuring equitable development”.

“By addressing malnutrition, the initiative will strengthen educational outcomes, productivity, and health equity across Nigeria,” she added, just as she identified strong leadership, supportive policies, strategic partnerships, and community-driven engagement as strategic pillars to achieve the objectives of Nutrition 774.

Quality Leadership is Different from Good Politics, Says Adebayo

The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has stated that Nigeria’s problem is basic and could be solved within four years, but lamented that people always think that politics and governance are the same thing.

He noted that there is a marked difference between politics and governance, stressing that one could be adept in politics but a total failure in governance. 

“If governance fails, everything will crumble. So, politics and governance are two different things. There are people who can be in governance who are not avid in politics, but they are very good,” he added.

He cited an example of Lagos, which used to have the best water in the English speaking world due to governance, not politics.

“If you read the colonial journals, if you are coming from London, they say, no, no, don’t bother. Once you get to Lagos, you can drink water from the fountain anywhere. It’s safe,” he stated.

He emphasized that the person who was behind all of that and those who built the waterworks were not politicians because if you ask them to stand up and speak, they wouldn’t know what to say but they were good in provision of water.

“The people who came up with the best idea for education were not good in politics, but they knew how to educate people. So, the role of politics is that you will select those who are politically communicative and bring them to your political party. Then, you also select those who are very proficient in the areas of life and who can say farewell to poverty and empower the people that can uplift the nation,” he said.

He said that to be able to deliver good governance, one must be able to bring together talented individuals with fantastic political communication and political organizing ability and not necessarily people who are good in politics.

He added that in addition to having the leadership skills to manage resources, such persons must also have some levels of altruism because to succeed in politics one must be willing and ready to do the required things. 

“This is because in politics, you do things that don’t affect you. Altruism is what makes a soldier die in a war that doesn’t have any personalistic aim. Altruism is what makes you to build schools for children that are not yours.

“That altruism is what will make you to build a national institution. But, the opposite of altruism is what makes you appropriate what was built before you came and now put your name on it. It’s all part of the problems. So what you need to learn is that offering good governance is not difficult. Our problems are basic.

“We have solved them before in our civilization. In the past, we used not to be hungry at all. 

“We have had civilizations that are secure to the point where women would go to the stream, fetch water and be playing around. Nobody would worry about them.

“So, we can do it again. I don’t want you to think that our country is beset with unsolvable problems. None of our problems can last longer than the life of one administration that is committed and serious,” he said.

He used what the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, is doing to prove that the country’s problems can be solved in four years if the leadership in Nigeria is committed and serious.

He said: “It shows to you that if the person in charge of communication does that, education does that, health does that, it is easy to transform a developing country than a well-developed country. 

“So the idea that we need to be patient should be properly defined. It is a patience that is strategic, not just being patient. For example, if you are into construction and you do a concrete deck, you have to wait 21 days for it to dry. That is strategic patience. But you cannot say I’m waiting without pouring the concrete. You must pour the concrete first and then wait.

“So our leaders who say we should be patient, must do something which we are waiting for. A mother, who is cooking jollof rice for the children will tell them, wait for 30 minutes or one hour. They will be patient because they see that the mother is cooking. But if she’s lying on her bed and making telephone calls, they are going to worry.”
