2027: Bauchi Assembly Speaker Denies Interest in Governorship Race

The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Suleiman, has said that he has no interest in contesting for the governorship seat in 2027.

Suleiman made this known in a statement issued Saturday while responding to the growing calls for him to declare interest in the 2027 governorship race.

Recall that Bauchi State Coalition of Youth and Civil Society Groups had last week called on Suleiman to consider contesting for the top seat, citing his experience and achievements in public service.

The Speaker while appreciating the confidence reposed in him by the coalition maintained that governance and the fulfillment of his current mandate remained his immediate priority.

He noted: “While we sincerely appreciate the compliments and support expressed by the Bauchi State Coalition of Youth and Civil Society Groups, we believe that now is not the appropriate time to declare interest in any political position, including the 2027 gubernatorial race.

“This is not the time. There is still a lot to do. Our primary focus at this moment is on representation and governance, serving the interests of our constituents faithfully.”

Suleiman noted that when the time is right to pursue such political ambitions, it would be done transparently and in consultation with party leaders, political allies, and the people of Bauchi State.

“We hold a mandate entrusted to us by our constituents, and it is our duty to act in their best interests. Our commitment remains to serve with integrity and to prioritise the welfare of our constituents above all,” he said.

95% of Fever Cases in Lagos Not Malaria, Says Commissioner

Data now shows an astounding 95 out of every 100 fevers experienced in Lagos are not caused by malaria, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has said.

The critical finding is at the heart of a new, multi-pronged approach to fever management, designed to combat misdiagnosis and, crucially, to avert a looming crisis of antimicrobial resistance.

Abayomi said this at a three-day Study Kick-Off of the Pathway to Pre-Elimination and Digitisation Project in Lagos State.

The focus was Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test and Microscopy Comparative Study & Assessment of PPMVS’ Capacity to Manage Malaria and Febrile Illnesses.

Abayomi said: “We need to get malaria out of the region.

“It is very, very important that we do that once and for all, perform the mind shift in our healthcare providers that on average, 95 out of every 100 fevers that you may see are not caused by malaria.”

“For too long, the default response to fever in Lagos, and indeed nationwide, had been to administer anti-malarial drugs, often without proper diagnostic testing.

This practice, the commissioner warned, was not only wasteful but dangerous.

According to him, the widespread, often unnecessary use of anti-malarial and antibiotics is accelerating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a global threat where common infections become untreatable.

“We are sitting on a very major problem of microbial resistance. And we have to be careful how we dispense antimicrobials and how we dispense antibiotics.”

He cited recent research indicating significant AMR in animals, with 60 per cent of human infections originating from them, stressing the interconnectedness of the problem.

Under the new “test, treat, and track” pathway/strategy, he said that Lagos residents presenting with fever will first undergo a Rapid Diagnostic Test for malaria.

“ If the result is negative, which is anticipated for the vast majority, healthcare providers will then conduct thorough examinations and investigations to pinpoint the true cause of the fever, be it pneumonia, gastroenteritis, or other infections.’

“The ministry is also tightening regulations on pharmacies.

“It is illegal to walk into a pharmacy and say, give me an antimalarial, or give me an antibiotic without a doctor’s, or healthcare practitioner’s, accredited healthcare practitioner’s certificate.”

Underscoring the urgency of the situation, he urged the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria to enforce this, stressing, “If we don’t stop that practice, we are going to be the capital of antimicrobial resistance”.

To combat this, the ministry, with support from a World Bank grant, and in collaboration with Prof. Wellington Oyibo’s Research Team, is instituting an evidence-based “test, treat, and track” pathway for fever management.

“The cornerstone of this approach is rigorous testing for malaria first.

“If negative—which is expected for over 90 per cent of cases in Lagos—healthcare providers are then mandated to investigate other potential causes of the fever, ranging from common colds to more serious bacterial or viral infections like E. coli, salmonella, or dengue.”

Oyibo, Director of the Centre for Transdisciplinary Research for Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases, who explained to the News Agency of Nigeria the grave consequences of not testing, also underscored the severity of misdiagnosis.

Oyibo, the study Coordinator, said: “If it’s a child that has pneumonia, pneumonia will present just the way you see some symptoms of malaria presenting.

“And you now give anti-malaria medicine without a test. What will happen to that child? That child will die quickly of pneumonia.”

According to Oyibo, the key strategy to eliminating malaria in the state also includes a policy shift toward Rapid Diagnostic Tests over traditional microscopy due to RDTs’ proven accuracy and operational feasibility in low-resource settings.

He noted that Lagos state was the only state that epidemiological parameters qualified as a state at pre-elimination.

“This is a significant milestone in the history of Nigeria but fever and other malaria-like symptoms, which are non-specific to malaria, are still diagnosed as malaria. This forms a significant contribution to high malaria burden reporting.

“This bold initiative aims to usher in an era of evidence-based medicine, where intellectual capacity and accurate diagnosis protect society from the cascading harms of incorrect treatment and drug resistance.

The Federal Government has pledged full support to a $400 million Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plan to build Africa’s largest rare earth and critical minerals plant in Nasarawa State, potentially creating over 10,000 jobs nationwide.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, lauded the project funders, Hasetins Commodities Limited, for keying into the value addition campaign of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and confirming that mineral processing is the strategy to take the jobless from the streets.

Hasetins hopes to add 12,000 metric tonnes to its current 6,000 metric tonnes installed capacity as preparations for the forthcoming groundbreaking of the additional facility gathers momentum.

Noting that it represents a significant milestone in efforts to spur investor confidence in the mining sector, Alake said the establishment of the plant would promote skills transfer and boost the contributions of the solid minerals sector to the economy.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director/CEO of Hasetins Commodities Ltd, Prince Jidayi Ijudigal, and his team, Alake applauded the company for its strategic foresight and patriotic investment in a $400 million rare earth metals plant, commending Hasetins for aligning its operations with the federal government’s drive for in-country processing and beneficiation of minerals.

“We have observed the introduction of mining marshals to combat illegal mining and reforms that have simplified the licensing process. These efforts have directly influenced our decision to invest heavily in this project. Beyond this flagship plant, we are also establishing regional separation plants and empowering local communities and miners,” he said.

Prince Jidayi noted that the company’s model ensures early-stage beneficiation by pre-separating metals locally, generating immediate income for artisanal miners. The initiative also includes training, provision of protective equipment, and broader community engagement.

Benue Political Coalition Emerges to Challenge APC, PDP in 2027 Elections

A new political realignment is taking shape in Benue State as a coalition of political actors and parties has vowed to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 general elections.

The coalition, comprising stakeholders across Benue South Senatorial District, convened over the weekend at Haggi Suite, Otukpo, to deliberate on the formation of a formidable third-force party to reshape the political landscape in the state and beyond.

In his welcome remarks, former Benue State PDP Chairman, Chief John Ngbede, decried the current state of the PDP, describing it as “decayed and hijacked by selfish interests.”

According to him, the party no longer serves the people’s collective aspirations, prompting the urgent need for a new political direction.

“The PDP has been taken over by individuals building barriers rather than bridges. They have imported poverty and division among our people. It’s time we unite under a new coalition to restore hope,” Ngbede stated.

The coalition draws strength from all nine local government areas of Benue South—Apa, Agatu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Otukpo, Okpokwu, Oju, and Obi. The movement is being spearheaded by none other than former Senate President of the 7th and 8th Assemblies, Senator David Mark, whose leadership is seen as a rallying point for credible opposition and reform.

Vice President KashimShettima has inaugurated the Strategic Board of the Nutrition 774 Initiative, describing it as a decisive step by the President Bola Tinubu administration to address the malnutrition crisis threatening lives and development across Nigeria.

According to him, the new board is a war room created to win the battle against malnutrition nationwide.

Speaking at the weekend during the inauguration of the board at the State House in Abuja, Shettima said malnutrition is a national emergency that poses both health and security threats to Nigeria and requires immediate, coordinated action across all 774 local government areas.

“This Strategic Board is not a ceremonial committee; it is a war room, assembled to win the battle against malnutrition in every corner of this country,” the Vice President said.

While urging the members of the newly inaugurated board to treat their appointment as a call to urgent national duty, Shettima said: “This is not a tea-drinking exercise. This is a national call to duty. A race against time.A mission to save lives and safeguard our future.

“We are counting on our state governors to drive implementation at scale, and on our local government chairmen who, being closest to the people, hold the keys to reaching the grassroots.”

He declared that the Nutrition 774 Initiative is President Tinubu administration’s “bold answer to a quiet emergency” that affects homes, schools, hospitals, and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the country.

“A nation that neglects the physiological needs of its people, particularly the most vulnerable, flirts with instability. Because a malnourished population is an unproductive one, and an unproductive population drags down the wheels of progress,” he warned.

The vice president explained that the Nutrition 774 Initiative is “designed to harmonise what has been scattered, to end duplication by embracing coordination, and to build a single, unified framework that allows us to align, act, and deliver measurable impact.”

Also speaking, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, AlhajiAtikuBagudu, commended the Vice President for championing the food security and nutrition initiative, saying such programmes will reduce poverty and enhance social cooperation.

According to him: ” You (Shettima) grew up in a peaceful Borno, and then it all went wrong for a combination of reasons. You knew how tough it was to turn things around, but luckily, you did.

“So, I believe when you are doing these things in respect of nutrition and food security, you are doing so from the point of view of your blessed leadership because you have a reckoning with history. We are lucky that you’re leading these efforts.”

On her part, Minister of Women Affairs, HajiyaImaanSulaiman-Ibrahim, while applauding the initiative, called for the empowerment of women, observing that it is an issue of poverty in a country where the majority of the households are female-headed and children-headed due to crises that have claimed the male heads of the family.

“So, you find a home that is being headed by an eleven-year-old because they have lost both parents. How do they feed? I think it’s an economic issue, and we have to come out strongly. So, as part of this plan, I would like you to address issues of economic empowerment for women,” she stated.

Also, the Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. ChikeOkafor, lauded the initiative as a right step in the right direction, assuring that the nutrition programme has all the backing and support of the National Assembly.

Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ofili, who was denied the chance to compete in the women’s 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games despite qualifying for the event, has dumped the country for Turkey.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Nigerian Olympics Committee (NOC) failed to enter her name, a devastating repeat of what happened in 2021, when she also missed the Tokyo Olympics after the federation and anti-doping authorities failed to ensure the required drug testing protocols were met.

Ofili and 12 other athletes were barred from competing at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

According to reports, Ofili began the nationality switch on May 31, 2025, and formally notified the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of her frustrations.

She made it clear that her decision was not financially motivated but rooted in a consistent pattern of negligence by the AFN.

Sadly, despite her complaints, the same AFN leadership responsible for these infractions was re-elected in June 2025 for another four years in office.

This perhaps is why she opted to take her career elsewhere where she will be better appreciated.

President Bola Tinubu has condemned in strong terms weekend’s suicide bombing in Konduga, Borno State, as well as lynching of 12 wedding guests travelling from Zaria in Kaduna State to Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The president, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed anguish over the suicide bombing in Konduga, Borno State, at the weekend.

President Tinubu mourned those who lost their lives, describing the attack as cowardly.

He urged security agencies to double their efforts in routing remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents who resort to attacks on soft targets as a diversionary tactic.

The president condoled with the Government and people of Borno State over the incident and directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support survivors.

President Tinubu also sympathised with the families of those killed or injured by an explosion on Saturday morning in Kano.

The explosion at a scrap metal factory affected 15 people, with five of them losing their lives.

The president stressed the importance of workplace safety measures and tasked relevant government institutions with investigating the incident.

Also on Sunday, President Tinubu condemned the killing of travellers in Plateau State, urging security forces to ensure the arrest and punishment of the culprits.

Reacting to the news of the murder of 12 wedding guests, including the father and brother of the groom, the president, in another release by presidential spokesperson, Onanuga, described the heinous action as unacceptable and barbaric.

The victims, many of them injured, were travelling from Zaria in Kaduna State, to Jos in Plateau State.

President Tinubu directed the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to work with other security and intelligence agencies to ensure those responsible for the attack are held accountable.

The president called for calm, promising not to allow the dastardly act to go unpunished.

According to him, “The Government of Plateau State must take decisive action in handling these vicious cycles of violence. The state government must work with security agents to get to the root of this recent incident and use it as a deterrent against future occurrences.

“Freedom of movement by all citizens is non-negotiable. We will not tolerate any attempt by anyone or group of people to curtail that fundamental freedom through acts of extreme violence and fear.”

Navy Recovers 3,225 Litres of Stolen Crude Oil, Deactivates 8 Illegal Refineries in Delta

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos have deactivated eight illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The exercise, which was carried out in three different operations, led to the seizure of 20,710 litres of stolen crude oil and 3,225 litres of illegally refined AGO.

According to the Commanding Officer, FOB, Escravos, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, weekend, the seized products were discovered in two locally fabricated ovens, 66 dugout pits and 43 polythene sacks.

In addition, he disclosed that the Base arrested three suspects and seized two boats.

Okoloagu said the operatives, on June 6, 2025, acting on actionable intelligence, dismantled three illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino, containing 4,660 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,125 litres of illegally refined AGO stored across one oven, 19 dugout pits and 15 polythene sacks.

He said the operatives again on June 13, 2025, dismantled another two sites at Oteghele, also within Obodo Omadino, leading to the recovery of 8,400 litres of stolen crude oil stored in 21 dugout pits.

Maintaining operational momentum, Okoloagu said the operatives again, on June 15, following credible intelligence of illegal crude oil siphoning at Chevron Nigeria Limited Malu Jacket 19, offshore Escravos, an Anti-Crude Oil Theft team was deployed.

“On arrival, the team discovered a wooden boat connected to the platform via a hose, siphoning crude oil. The boat, fitted with a 40HP Yamaha outboard engine, was seized and three suspects were arrested,” he added.

The Naval boss disclosed that another one speedboat fitted with 200HP Yamaha outboard engine was also impounded during the operation.

Okoloagu stated that the successful operations were carried out based on credible intelligence and in support of Operation Delta Sanity II, which underscores the commitment of FOB Escravos to the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EmmanueI Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, aimed at eradicating all forms of illegalities within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

“In support of efforts to boost Nigeria’s daily crude oil production quantity, Nigerian Navy personnel attached to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos will continue to sustain the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other acts of economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region,” he stated.
