President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday gave a marching order to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa to, without further delay, flush out all the criminal elements formenting trouble in Benue state.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, as part of his visit to commemorate with the government and people over recent killings in the state, the President directed the CDS and other security agencies to smoke out the criminals wreaking havoc in the state.
He thanked the military high command for their response so far but pressed for greater vigilance and coordination on the ground.
His words: “Christopher [Chief of Defence Staff], thank you very much. I watched your comments. I know you can’t be tired of staying in the bush, including Oluyede [Chief of Army Staff] and the Air Marshal. Thanks to all of you, but we need to keep our ears to the ground. Let’s get those criminals, let’s get them out”.
He also charged the heads of the intelligence agencies to improve their surveillance and response systems.
According to President Tinubu: “DG NIA and DG DSS, retool your information channels and let’s have tangible intelligence that this will not occur again”.
The President also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of arrests by the Police following the mass killings.
He said: “Police, I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be arrest of those criminals”.
Assuring the state of the federal government’s backing and his personal resolve to end the cycle of bloodshed, President Tinubu said, “I give you the assurance that we will find peace, we will convert this tragedy to prosperity again and again.”
The President reiterated that his administration remains committed to national development, but noted that meaningful progress depends on peace and the protection of lives.
“We’ve been fastening our belts to give development to our country. It’s only when you make the people of your state the priority that you can plan good for them and you can execute good programmes,” he said.
President Tinubu reaffirmed that the federal government would do all it takes to ensure Benue finds healing and a path forward after the latest tragedy.
“I want the traditional rulers—the Tor Tiv, the Och’Idoma and others—to be included in this peace committee. I’m ready to invest in that peace”, he said.
The President also directed Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to immediately constitute an inclusive peace committee to help restore calm following the massacre of over 200 persons in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, by suspected armed herders.
He said the peace committee must include all stakeholders—former governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and even non-indigenes—and announced that he would personally be involved in its work.
“Let’s establish the committee of leaders. We cannot do without one another,” the President told a town hall meeting held at the Government House in Makurdi.
“Whatever we need to do, I will want us—this leadership committee now—we’ll meet in Abuja to really fashion out the nucleus of a lasting peace, and I’m ready to invest in that peace”, President Tinubu said.
He stressed that the peace effort would only be meaningful if it was broad-based and collaborative, calling for synergy with neighboring Nasarawa State, whose governor, Abdullahi Sule, was also present at the meeting.
“The governor of Nasarawa is here and the governor of Benue is here, let’s create that synergy for peace, development, and prosperity. We’re here to govern, not to bury. We’re here to raise families, not to lose some”.
The President called on the people of Benue to support Governor Alia in this critical moment, urging communities to embrace peace and inclusion.
“This is a very critical time. The governor needs your help. Let’s have a committee with non-indigenes incorporated,” President Tinubu urged.

President Bola Tinubu has arrived at Makurdi Airport on a one-day visit to Benue.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president touched down at exactly 1:40pm.

He was received at the airport by Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue and Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF).

NAN reports that all the North Central governors, ministers, political appointees, and stakeholders were also on ground at the airport to receive him.

The President, upon arrival, met with survivors of the Yelewata Town attack who are receiving medical treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

He will thereafter hold a town hall meeting with Benue stakeholders as part of efforts to bring to an end the ongoing senseless attacks, killings, and displacement of citizens. (NAN)

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to visit Benue State tomorrow for an on-the-spot assessment of conditions in the North-central state following persistent violent killings by suspected Fulani herders.

Tinubu would try to foster peace and address impacted communities in the state.

The president, initially billed to embark on an official visit to Kaduna State tomorrow, has now rescheduled the state visit to Thursday.

According to a release yesterday by the presidential spokesperson, BayoOnanuga, the president’s visit aims to assess first-hand the recurring crisis that has claimed numerous lives and caused significant destruction in Benue State.

During his stay, Tinubu will hold a town hall meeting with stakeholders, including traditional rulers; political, religious, and community leaders; and youth groups, to seek lasting solutions to the hostilities.

In preparation for the visit, Tinubu has already sent Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; Inspector General of Police (IGP), KayodeEgbetokun; National Security Adviser (NSA), MallamNuhuRibadu; heads of intelligence agencies; and Chairmen of the Senate and House Defence Committees to Benue State.

Tinubu had previously condemned the violence in Benue State and called on all leaders and residents to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding.

Speaking also at the inauguration of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, held along Airport Road, Tinubu observed a minute of silence in honour of victims of recent violence in Benue State, and extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and communities.

The president said in the statement, “While I sympathise with the people of Benue, I’ve spoken to the governor. The leadership of Benue should accept our condolences and try hard – very consciously – to maintain peace and harmony among themselves.

“We are a huge family living in the same house, staying in different rooms, but living together in harmony.”

Tinubu, Abbas Push for Multi-layered Approach to National Security

President Bola Tinubu and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive and multifaceted strategy to address Nigeria’s complex and evolving security challenges.

They emphasised the importance of strengthening the legal framework to improve coordination and intelligence sharing among the country’s security agencies.

Tinubu and Abbas spoke during a one-day legislative dialogue focused on constitutional amendments and reforms to the national security architecture, organised by the House Committee on Constitution Review, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Speaking through the Minister of Defence, Mohammed BadaruAbubakar, Tinubu stressed the need to realign Nigeria’s security structure with current realities.

He cautioned that relying solely on a centralised system or moving towards complete decentralisation would not adequately secure the country.

According to Tinubu, rising calls for the creation of state police, increasing cybercrime threats, and the demand for improved inter-agency intelligence cooperation highlight the need for a more flexible and collaborative security setup.

He outlined the range of security threats facing Nigeria, from terrorism in the North-east and banditry in the North-west to the farmer-herder conflicts in the Middle Belt and separatist movements in the South-east, emphasising that no single agency can address the issues alone.

Tinubu pointed to the government’s integrated security strategy, which included intelligence coordination, joint task forces, and unified offensives, as having yielded tangible outcomes, such as breaking up separatist groups in the South-east and disrupting criminal operations in the North-west.

“These initiatives have led to fewer high-profile kidnappings and stronger responses to cross-border threats,” Tinubu said, citing them as proof that an all-of-government approach is effective.

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu highlighted progress, such as the establishment of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, the deployment of surveillance drones and mine-resistant vehicles, and a shift towards community policing to build trust with citizens.

Earlier, Abbas, in his remarks, stated the timeliness of the dialogue, stressing the importance of reviewing outdated laws to better respond to current security threats.

He argued that Nigeria’s security issues required a strategy that was “multi-dimensional, inclusive, technologically informed, and responsive”, saying such a strategy must rest on a firm legal and institutional base.

Abbas stated, “Our goal is to redesign the security system so it can truly address insecurity. This dialogue also serves as a platform to fine-tune key bills, such as the one proposing state police.

“The House of Representatives is prepared to go beyond mere legislative motions to enact meaningful reforms that support federal anti-insecurity measures.”

Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, described the event as a critical “diagnostic session.”

Kalu observed that past security-related laws were often crafted without adequate input from those engaged directly in the field.

“As lawmakers, our reforms must be grounded in accurate diagnoses. We’re here to hear from those on the frontlines who understand the real challenges,” Kalu said.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, also called for urgent updates to Nigeria’s legal and constitutional frameworks in light of emerging threats, such as cyber warfare, hybrid conflicts, and insurgency.

He criticised the existing legal structures as outdated, pointing to unclear chains of command and ambiguous detention protocols that hinder effective internal military operations.

Musa recommended: reforms to amend the Armed Forces Act and related constitutional clauses, setting up field and permanent court martials in all commands, giving constitutional status to court-martials as superior courts of record, granting the military power to investigate and detain suspects during internal security missions, empowering the navy to collaborate with Customs and Immigration on inland waterways to tackle piracy and smuggling, and introducing a merit-based system for appointing service chiefs.

He further proposed that court-martials be authorised to prosecute individuals captured in acts of terrorism or insurrection under martial law.

“Security is more than just weaponry, it depends on legal clarity, institutional capacity, and public trust,” Musa said.

National Security Adviser (NSA), NuhuRibadu, represented by National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Maj. Gen. AdamuLaka, emphasised that constitutional structure and national security were deeply linked.

He stressed the need for a constitution that was inclusive, proactive, and capable of addressing the root causes of conflicts, arguing that such a constitution is essential to building national cohesion.

“The constitution must grow with the aspirations and challenges of Nigerians. It should help resolve grievances, protect rights, and strengthen trust between citizens and the state,” Ribadu said.

He praised the National Assembly for initiating the dialogue and urged lawmakers to consider reforms that decentralise service delivery, enhance institutional capacity, and improve governance efficiency.

“As we deliberate today,” he stated, “let’s remember that constitutional reform is not only about structure, it’s also about safeguarding the unity, stability, and sovereignty of our Republic.”

Alia: 151 Killed in Yelewata Massacre, Blames Armed Herders, Terrorists

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, yesterday, confirmed that at least 151 people were killed in the recent massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, during an attack by armed herders and terrorist groups.

Alia, who spoke during an interview on ARISE TV Primetime, described the assault as the most devastating in recent times. He said the death toll rose from 59 earlier in the day to 151 as more bodies, many burned beyond recognition, were discovered in homes and bushes.

“Two are still in the morgue, and 18 have yet to be buried,” he said, stressing, “Four more bodies were just found in the bushes.”

Despite the long history of farmer-herder conflicts in Benue State, the governor emphasised that the attacks had evolved into something far more sinister.

“This is no longer about farmer-herder clashes,” he said, “What we are facing now are full-scale assaults by well-armed bandits and terrorists.”

The Yelewata area, which borders Nasarawa State, was targeted by the assailants who reportedly arrived via a river route, bypassing military and police checkpoints.

“They came in large numbers and first attacked the security personnel on the highway. When they were pushed back, they regrouped and overwhelmed the community,” Alia explained.

He acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu had previously ordered the Chief of Army Staff to take personal charge of the security situation in Benue following similar attacks.

“Three mobile military units were deployed, and they helped calm the situation in Sankara, where the earlier violence had occurred,” he said.

However, he observed a dangerous shift in attacks from the Sankara axis to Guma and Gwer West previously considered calm.

He said despite federal intervention, the attacks had continued.

“Yes, there was support from the federal government. But it is not enough if people are still being slaughtered,” the governor stated.

He said local forces needed to be empowered to defend their communities, stressing that Nigeria must man its unmanned borders.

Asked about Tinubu’s suggestion to organise peace meetings between warring communities, Alia expressed scepticism about negotiating with faceless terror groups.

He said, “We’ve handled farmer-herder crises through community reconciliation in the past. But this is now on a different level. These are external armed groups, not local communities at odds.”

He, however, said he remained hopeful, regardless.

“We had visits today from the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff, who both promised new strategies if current ones fail. The president is also expected in Benue on Wednesday, and his presence will go a long way,” Alia explained.

The governor sued for unity and vigilance, saying, “We need to man our borders, think together, plan together, and protect our land together. We need peace and we must all come together to defend it.”

Akume: Benue Killings Disheartening

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described the continued bloodletting and mindless killings across Benue State as both disheartening and utterly condemnable.

In a statement yesterday, Akume described the latest carnages as one too many, adding that it is not merely a tragedy for Benue, but a deep wound to the soul of the nation.

He stated, “These dastardly acts are not restricted to Benue State alone. Plateau and Zamfara states also suffer the same fate. These killings are economic deterministic, not religious driven.

“The innocent lives lost — men, women, and children — will not be forgotten. We mourn them not as strangers, but as brothers and sisters, bound together by a shared humanity and a common destiny.”

The SGF exhorted all sons and daughters of Benue, leaders, traditional institutions, and key stakeholders to urgently come together to forge a path towards lasting peace and security.

He called on the people to rise above division and act decisively to protect their people and preserve their future.

Akume stated, “I express profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for his swift directive for a full security operation to rid Benue of these killers and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“It is to be noted also, that the federal government has rendered assistance through NEMA, while more troops have been deployed to Benue state to handle the explosive situation.

“For my part, as a son of the soil and a key stakeholder, I will not relent in consulting, mobilising, and coordinating all necessary efforts to find and implement a durable solution, as I am doing the same for all the other affected states.

“As believers, Christians, Muslims, traditionalists, we believe in the sanctity of human lives. Any single life lost offends the sensibility of God Almighty. All of us must live as brothers and sisters in peace and harmony.”

IG, CDS Vow to Chase Out Killers in Benue

The IG, who paid a sympathy visit to Governor Hyacinth Alia, alongside his team, at Government House, Makurdi, described the killings as barbaric.

He sympathised with Alia over the colossal loss.

Egbetokun pledged to collaborate with other security agencies to tackle insurgency in the state.

He stated, “I am here to access the situation and work together with other law enforcement agencies to proffer permanent solution to the pogrom ravaging the state.

“I am worried over the unending human carnage and everything humanly possible would be done to ensure peaceful coexistence in the State.”

Responding, Alia thanked the IG and CDS for the visit.

“Let me commend them for the concern demonstrated at different times during crises situations in the state,” he stated.

He also appreciated Tinubu for his resilience and unwavering commitment towards ensuring the end to the human carnage in the state.

Meanwhile, Egbetokun directed the immediate deployment of additional tactical teams and assets to counter the continued killings in Benue State.

He also assigned Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, DIG Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, to take charge and oversee the operations aimed at restoring peace and serenity in the state.

Spokesperson of the force, OlumuyiwaAdejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, in a statement, revealed that the IG was accompanied to Benue State by some senior officers.

They included Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, Yakubu, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Logistics and Supply, DIG AdebolaAyindeHamzat, the AIG Zone 4, AIG Zachariah Fera, and the CP SIS, CP AbayomiShogunle.

“Upon his arrival in Benue State, the IGP visited the state government, where he commiserated with the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, who expressed his ease and delight at the IGP’s visit and the deployment of personnel and tactical assets over time and even at the moment,” Adejobi said.

The statement said in his discussion with the governor, the IGP condemned the attacks, describing the killings as senseless and an act of terrorism.

He reassured the governor of the Nigeria Police’s efforts to rein in the situation and bring the perpetrators of the heinous and barbaric acts to justice.

The IGP also seized the opportunity to visit the Yelwata community, where he inspected the damage done and engaged with community leaders alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.

NGF: Killings Are Affront to Humanity

Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), yesterday, condemned the bloody attack on the people of Yelewata and Daudu in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, describing it as an affront to human dignity.

A statement issued by NGF Chairman, AlhajiAbdulRamanAbdulRazaq, who is also the governor of Kwara State, said the heinous act represented a grievous affront to human dignity and must be condemned.

NGF condoled the governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, and the people of Yelewata and Daudu.

The statement said, “The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), under the leadership of His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Executive Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Forum, extends its profound condolences to His Excellency Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Government and people of Benue State, regarding the devastating attack on the communities of Yelewata and Daudu in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

“This heinous act represents a grievous affront to human dignity and must be unequivocally condemned. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in unwavering solidarity with the bereaved families and the State Government at this time of profound sorrow.

“We pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls, divine comfort for grieving families, speedy recovery for the injured, and the resilience of survivors.

“The forum pledges its full cooperation and readiness to assist Benue State and relevant authorities in restoring peace and security.

“We urge every Nigerian, irrespective of creed or affiliation, to denounce such brutality and collaborate towards forging a nation rooted in peace, justice, and mutual respect.”

Atiku: Benue Can’t Bleed in Silence

Former Vice President AtikuAbubakar said the killings in Benue State must not be allowed to continue, saying the state cannot continue to bleed in silence.

While warning that enough was enough, he stated, “The bloodshed in Benue State has reached a devastating crescendo — a brutal and heart-wrenching reality that can no longer be ignored.

“For years, families have buried their loved ones in silence, villages have been ravaged, and communities shattered, while those in power watch from a distance, offering nothing but hollow assurances.

“How much more must the people of Benue endure before their humanity is acknowledged? Their demand is simple: to live in peace, to sleep without fear, to farm without being slaughtered, and to raise their children without the constant shadow of violence.

“When citizens take to the streets to protest this injustice, they are not inciting rebellion, they are crying for help.

‘’They are demanding what every Nigerian is constitutionally entitled to: the right to life and the protection of that life by the state. But what do they receive in return? Tear gas. Brutality. Disdain. It is pouring hot oil on an open wound.”

Atiku added, “To unleash force on grieving, defenceless citizens is not governance, it is cruelty. It is a betrayal of the sacred duty of leadership. What kind of government meets a cry for safety with the barrel of a gun and a canister of gas?

“The silence, the indifference, the lack of urgency, it is all damning. It speaks to a deeper rot in the conscience of leadership, a frightening normalisation of violence against the very people they swore to protect.”

The former vice president said, “This is a call to conscience to every leader at both the federal and state levels: stop turning a blind eye while Benue drowns in blood. Stop offering condolences and start offering solutions.

“Work with security agencies, deploy resources, and craft a security architecture that prioritises human lives over political optics.  Benue is not alone. From Plateau to Zamfara, Kaduna to Taraba; the cries are the same. Nigerians are bleeding and begging to be heard.

‘’We urge the people not to be silenced. Raise your voices. Demand accountability. Demand justice. Demand a government that sees you, hears you, and protects you. History will not be kind to those who chose power over people. The time to act is now.’’

David Mark, NCPA Lament Govt’s Inability to Neutralise Benue Crises Perpetrators

Former President of the Senate, David Mark, and the North Central Peace Advocates (NCPA), yesterday, condemned what they described as failure of the Nigerian government to name, confront, and neutralise the perpetrators of the violence currently rocking Benue State.

They expressed their disappointments in two separate statements issued in Abuja, where they spoke about their deep concern over the relentless attacks on communities in Benue.

They warned that the repeated framing of the violence as “herders-farmers clashes” dangerously misrepresented the nature of the crisis.

Mark, one of Benue’s prominent political leaders, in a statement, issued a grave warning, saying, “If the government fails to act, the people may be forced to defend themselves.

“This is a senseless and tragic carnage. No government should watch its citizens being slaughtered and expect them to remain passive forever. If this continues, self-defence will become inevitable.”

Mark called on both the federal government and the Benue State government under Governor Hyacinth Alia to urgently scale up security measures.

Coordinator of NCPA, Frank Utor, said, “This is not a farmer-herder conflict. The killers are not herdsmen. They are well-coordinated, heavily armed and politically motivated terror groups backed by international networks.

“They ride on motorcycles, not on camels. They steal cattle to fund their activities, and their goal is simple—destabilise Nigeria.”

The group faulted successive governments for mischaracterising the conflict, arguing that such misdiagnosis has impeded the work of security agencies.

PDP Holds Tinubu Responsible for Killings

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, condemned the gruesome massacre of over 200 Nigerians, including children in Benue State, describing it as another horrifying chapter in the history of the nation under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

In a statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary, DeboOlogunagba, the party said it was alarmed by reports of how terrorists and bandits invaded and overran communities in series of coordinated daily bloody attacks, unleashing violence, murdering hundreds of defenseless compatriots unchallenged, while the Tinubu APC government remained largely unconcerned.

The statement said, “It is clear that the assailants marauding communities in various states of the country are being emboldened by President Tinubu’s lethargic approach to security as well as the alleged complicity of the APC, which has failed to decisively confront the situation given its reported connection with terrorist interests.”

PDP said it was traumatic to watch the gory pictures and videos of Nigerians who were murdered in cold blood in Benue State and other parts of the country while Tinubu and APC carried on as if all was well.

PDP stated, “President Tinubu should be held responsible for the killings in Nigeria having not demonstrated the will and commitment expected of a Commander-in-Chief in the fight against terrorism in our country.

“Instead, he has remained largely aloof and resorted to passing the buck with his aides issuing lame press statements without corresponding urgent presidential action to guarantee the security of citizens.”

LP Seeks Comprehensive Security Deployment to Vulnerable Communities

Labour Party (LP) called for an immediate and comprehensive deployment of security agents to vulnerable communities in the North-central, especially, Benue State. 

The party also called for urgent humanitarian intervention to provide food, shelter, medical care, and trauma support for victims of the dastardly massacre in communities in Benue.

Acting National Chairman of the party, Senator NenadiUsman, who made the call yesterday, further urged transparent investigation and prosecution of those behind the killings, maintaining that the probe should be swift and thorough no matter the background and affiliations of those involved.

Decrying the Benue massacre, the LP national leader while expressing sadness over the incident maintained that the victims were not just numbers.

“They were human beings, innocent lives cut short; children who deserved protection, not slaughter; mothers who should be nurturing their families, not buried in mass graves; fathers whose lives were stolen while defending their homes,” she said.

According to her, the “fresh wave of senseless killings in Benue State, where nearly hundreds of people have been brutally murdered in cold blood is a level of bloodshed that should shake every conscience in Nigeria.”

Writing on her official X handle, @SenNenadiUsman, she stated, “The burning of homes, the ambush of security officers, the helplessness of internally displaced persons caught in these merciless attacks, all expose the continued failure of government at all levels to fulfil the most basic responsibility: to protect lives and property.”

She added that as a country Nigeria could not continue like this.

She stated, “We in the Labour Party pledge to stand and will continue to advocate for policies that protect our people, empower the weak, and deliver justice to the victims.

“To the grieving families, I mourn with you as a mother. To the children left orphaned, to the women widowed, to the communities shattered, know that your pain is felt across this nation, and your cries for justice will not be ignored.

“Nigeria must rise beyond mere condemnations. We must act decisively. The blood of the innocent cries out and as a people, we must respond with justice, with compassion, and with urgency. Enough is enough.”

President’s Response Disconnected, Inadequate, Say Opposition Parties

Secretary of the Coalition of United Opposition Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, said the presidency’s response to the ongoing gruesome killings in Benue State was not only disappointing but utterly reprehensible.

Ameh said the “Statements calling for the arrest of perpetrators on all sides and advocating for dialogue and reconciliation to bring peace to Benue are grossly disconnected from the grim reality on the ground.

‘’The suggestion of dialogue with terrorists who slaughter innocent men, women, and children in the dead of night, destroying entire communities, is not only impractical but an insult to the victims.

‘’The presidency has failed to identify these perpetrators, yet proposes negotiations as if the victims share responsibility for their own massacre.’

‘’Equally outrageous is the president’s assertion that ‘political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory utterances that could further increase tensions and killings.

‘’This misplacement of blame suggests that the true threat lies in the words of grieving communities rather than the actions of terrorists who are systematically wiping out entire villages.

‘’Such rhetoric is not only misleading but perpetuates a dangerous narrative that dismisses the targeted nature of these attacks.’’

NGO to FG: Go Beyond Condolences, Launch Independent Judicial Panel

A nongovernmental organisation, Building Blocks for Peace Foundation (BBFORPEACE), called on the federal government to go beyond condolences and launch an independent judicial panel in the face of the recent Benue killings.

It also said there was a need to strengthen the presence of well-equipped, professional, and neutral security forces in Guma and other flashpoints across Benue State to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable populations.

Executive Director of BBFORPEACE, RafiuAdeniranLawal, who made the call in a statement yesterday, said if such impunity must end, there was also the need to ensure prompt arrest and prosecution of all those involved in all the attacks, as well as those who fund, arm, or shield the perpetrators and hold them accountable without exception.

He said the government should afterwards provide immediate humanitarian support to displaced families and relocate internally displaced persons in high-risk zones like Yelewata to safer and better-secured environments.

Nigeria Can’t Continue on This Trajectory of Bloodshed, IPCR Laments

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) expressed concern over the continued killings in Benue State.

The IPCR, in a statement by its Director General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, said the incessant violence, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property, has become a recurring theme in the lives of citizens.

He decried that the situation has reached a boiling point, and it was imperative to acknowledge that Nigeria could not continue on this trajectory of bloodshed.

It stated, “There is a need for all hands to be on deck to address this situation. Stakeholders from all sectors should come out and raise their voices against this development; it should not be left to the government alone.

“The human cost of this violence is staggering, with lives lost and many more displaced, forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The trauma inflicted on individuals, families, and communities is immeasurable.

“The nation’s collective psyche is scarred, and the social fabric is beginning to fray. The economic impact of this bloodshed is also significant, disrupting economic activities, leading to the closure of businesses, and deterring investment.

“The situation demands collective action from all stakeholders. The government, security agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society must work together to address the root causes of the violence.

“The security agencies have been playing a crucial role in the fight against insecurity, and they still have a critical role to play in restoring peace and stability. They must be equipped with the necessary resources, training, and expertise to effectively respond to security challenges.

“The government must also ensure that the security agencies operate within the bounds of the law, respecting human rights and upholding the rule of law.”

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote yesterday fulfilled a promise to significantly ‘shakedown’ the downstream petroleum sector, with the company announcing that the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery will commence direct distribution of  fuel nationwide from August.

Chairman of the Dangote Group had last week pledged to  President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians that there will be a major overhaul of the downstream sector, following the visit of the Nigerian leader to the $20 billion facility located in Lagos.

“Now that the President has visited and he has given us additional energy, we will inform you, you will hear from us soon, and that will be one of the major shakedowns in the entire country. It is not the reduction of price, it will be the total overhaul of the downstream,” he stated.

In a statement, the company stated that effective August 15, 2025, it would begin the distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) commonly known as petrol, and diesel to marketers, petrol dealers, manufacturers, telecoms firms, aviation, and other large users across the country. The company said the arrangement comes with free logistics to boost the distribution network.

To ensure smooth take-off of the scheme, Dangote Refinery said it had invested in the procurement of 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered tankers. It said that this phase of the programme would continue over an extended timeframe.  

According to the statement, the refinery is also investing in CNG stations, commonly referred to as daughter booster stations, supported by a fleet of over 100 CNG tankers across the country to ensure seamless product distribution.

“This strategic programme is part of our broader commitment to eliminating logistics costs, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability, and supporting Nigeria’s economic development. It affirms our dedication to improving the availability and affordability of fuel, in support of broader efforts to strengthen the economy and improve the wellbeing of all Nigerians.

“Under this initiative, all petrol stations purchasing PMS and diesel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery will benefit from this enhanced logistics support. Key sectors such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and others will also gain from this transformative initiative, as reduced fuel costs will contribute to lower production costs, reduced inflation, and foster economic growth. Players in these key sectors and others can purchase directly from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

“In addition, the refinery will offer a credit facility to those purchasing a minimum of 500,000 litres—allowing them to obtain an additional 500,000 litres on credit for two weeks, under bank guarantee. This pioneering effort marks a major milestone in our vision to revolutionise Nigeria’s energy sector,” the company added.
Stressing that it was dedicated to ensuring that no place was left behind, it pointed out that “Our goal is to provide equitable access to affordable fuel for all Nigerians, regardless of location, making energy more accessible and sustainable for everyone, wherever they may be.”

The company said the move was expected to revitalise previously inactive petrol stations, thereby driving job creation, stimulating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), increasing government revenue, improving fuel access in rural and underserved communities, and strengthening investor confidence in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.

It added that the initiative was inline with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, reflecting the company’s shared commitment to economic progress, stability, and inclusive development.

“We sincerely thank the federal government for its continued support, especially through the Naira-for-Crude scheme, which has helped stabilise fuel supply amid global price volatility. It marks a major revolution in the midstream and downstream sectors and stands as a key example of President Bola Tinubu’s bold and reformative economic policies.

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, described the recent killings in Benue State as depressing, declaring this must stop, as government will not let the bloodletting in the state continue.

Tinubu directed security chiefs to implement his earlier directive to bring lasting peace and security to Benue State.

He called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to convene a meeting of the warring factions for lasting peace.

Pope Leo XIV, yesterday, expressed deep sorrow at the murderous attack on Benue State, which resulted in the massacre of about 200 persons. The pope spoke during Mass at the Vatican. He offered solemn prayers for the deceased and Nigeria, in general. 

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called on Tinubu to declare war on criminal elements unleashing mayhem on communities in Benue State and other states in the region. 

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode; former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi; and Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) condemned the cold-blooded killings as shocking.

Benue State Youths converged at Wurukum Roundabout early yesterday morning in protest against the unremitting carnage in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen. They were later tear-gased by policemen deployed to the area.

The attacks in Benue State occurred at night between June 13 and 14 in the town of Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area. 

THISDAY gathered that most of the victims were internally displaced persons receiving care at a hospital operated by a local Catholic mission.

Tinubu, in a statement by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, renewed his order in the wake of the latest round of attacks, which had led to the death of many people.

On the president’s directive, intelligence chiefs, the police, and the military have arrived the state to direct security operations and restore sanity.

Tinubu Alia to convene reconciliation meetings and dialogue among the warring parties to end the bloodshed and bring lasting peace and harmonious co-existence between herders and the indigenous communities.

Describing the killings as inhuman and anti-progress, the president called on political leaders and community leaders in conflict areas to stop fuelling the crisis through unguarded utterances that could further inflame tensions. He said leaders should rein in those who were out to cause provocations and ignite reprisal attacks.

The statement quoted Tinubu as saying, “The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough.

“I have directed the security agencies to act decisively and arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict and prosecute them.

“Political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory utterances that could further increase tensions and killings.”

The president said, “This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue. 

“Our people must live in peace, and it is possible when leaders across the divides work together in harmony and differences are identified and addressed with fairness, openness and justice.”

Pope Prays for Victims, Seeks Peace

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow at the recent attack on Benue, during Mass at the Vatican, offering prayers for the deceased and Nigeria, in general. 

Describing the killings as a “terrible massacre” carried out with “extreme cruelty,” the pope called for an end to the cycle of violence. 

He said, “A terrible massacre took place, in which about 200 people were killed, with extreme cruelty, most of whom were internally displaced, hospitalised by the local Catholic mission.”

Visibly moved during his remarks at the Vatican, the pope called for an end to the ongoing cycle of violence plaguing Nigeria, a country he referred to as “beloved” but “so affected by various forms of violence”.

He stated, “I pray that security, justice and peace prevail in Nigeria, a beloved country, so affected by various forms of violence. And I pray, in particular, for the rural Christian communities of Benue State, which have been incessantly victims of violence.”

The pope’s statement added to the growing international condemnation of the persistent violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region often wracked by sectarian and communal conflict. 

The pope urged the global community not to forget those suffering in silence. He called on the Nigerian authorities to uphold the safety and dignity of all citizens.

CAN to Tinubu: Declare Total War on Criminals Terrorising Benue, Borno, Others

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called on Tinubu to declare war on criminal elements terrorising communities in Benue State. 
CAN also urged the government to stop the resurgence of the activities of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. 

The association, in a statement yesterday in Kaduna, urged the president to urgently take decisive action to end the bloodshed and destructions. 
The statement, signed by  Secretary General of Northern CAN, Sunday Oibe, condemned Saturday’s killings  in Benue communities, declaring that the persistent attacks  by suspected herdsmen are unacceptable. 

The association expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Benue, Borno, and other parts of the country. 

Oibe stated that the violent activities perpetrated by suspected herdsmen and Boko Haram terrorists had made life increasingly unbearable for innocent citizens.

The statement said, “On Saturday, June 13, 2025,  we received distressing reports of attacks by suspected herdsmen in  Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.  
“Available information indicated that over 100 people were killed in the attacks, which occurred less than 48 hours after the tragic killing of 25 people in Mtswenem and Akondotyough Bawa communities in Makurdi LGA 
“Reports indicated that many internally displaced persons (IDPs) and farmers were killed, with some reportedly burnt alive in makeshift shelters. 

“The gunmen,  armed with sophisticated weapons, were said to have launched the attack around midnight and operated for over two hours.
“Similarly, last week in Borno State, one person was killed, while Rev. Fr. Daniel Afina, a Catholic priest and project coordinator of a Christian NGO, along with nine others, were abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on the Gwoza-Limankara Road as they were ambushed while returning from Mubi in Adamawa State.”

Oibe lamented that the security situation appeared to be worsening at a time when it seemed that the criminal elements had been contained by security agencies. 

He said in the statement, “We urgently call on the federal government to take decisive and comprehensive action to stop the killings and restore peace and security.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made initial progress in curbing these violent activities. However, these gains must be sustained and expanded.

“We urge the president to urgently declare total war against these criminals and direct security agencies to neutralise the threat within a clear and enforceable time frame. 

“Should the situation prove beyond the capacity of Nigeria’s security forces, the government should seek international assistance to halt the killings and abductions. 
“The killings are unacceptable, even within the animal kingdom. This brutality is rare, yet, in Nigeria, innocent lives are lost senselessly and repeatedly.”

Ode Condemns Killings in Yelwata

Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode, who visited the scene of the bloodshed on the directives of the governor, said the governor was not resting on his oars in efforts to ensure the state experienced peace.

Ode stated, “Governor Hyacinth Alia acknowledges and shares in the pains and grief caused by the this attacks on the community by criminal elements suspected to be armed herdsmen.

“The state government is consistently engaging with federal security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen security interventions and provide lasting solutions to these persistent attacks.

“We assure citizens that more tactical teams have started arriving to Benue from the federal government and additional security deployments are being arranged for vulnerable areas.

“Response squad teams are also deployed and will be in Benue from Sunday, strategic community dialogues are ongoing to enhance active intelligence sharing.”

Ode added, “The state’s joint operations units are also being strengthened, and will not relent in its utmost commitment to defending the lives and properties of all residents.

“In the spirit of peace and unity, we call on religious, traditional, and political leaders across the state to sensitise and guide the youths under their influence against unlawful gatherings or confrontations that may spiral out of control.

“We appeal to the public to make use of official communication channels to report any suspicious activities and to stay informed through credible sources. 

“Benue State remains committed to justice, peace, and security for all.”

Atiku Shocked over Fresh Benue Attacks

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed shock and anguish at the killings in Benue State. 

Atiku called on the federal government to move in and ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous crimes were arrested and prosecuted 

In a statement, the former vice president lamented that the killers were targeting defenceless Nigerians.

He suggested, “Enhanced security presence in the region, deploying necessary resources, personnel, equipment, and intelligence to guarantee the protection of vulnerable rural areas.”

Atiku stated, “I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State, where over 100 innocent lives are feared lost. 

“These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscores the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation. Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by those left widowed, orphaned, or displaced.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and communities who have suffered unimaginable loss. As a nation, we must pause and reflect on the mounting human toll of this senseless violence.

“I urge the federal government and Benue State authorities to launch a prompt, transparent investigation into the attack.

“The identities of the perpetrators must be swiftly uncovered and justice served.” 

The former vice president said the federal government should, “Enhance security presence in the region, deploying necessary resources, personnel, equipment, and intelligence to guarantee the protection of vulnerable rural areas.

“Engage affected communities through dialogue, traditional leadership, and civil society to restore confidence and foster resilience.

“Accelerate compensation and support effort, including medical aid, trauma counselling, and livelihood restoration for survivors and bereaved families.”

He said, “This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy, it is a national emergency that demands immediate attention and decisive action.

“I call on all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion, to unite in condemning this atrocity. We must hold our leaders accountable and insist on sustainable solutions to the violent tragedies claiming lives across the country.

“May God comfort the grieving families, heal our nation, and help us reclaim peace and security for all.”

Obi: Killings Show Leadership Failure

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, condemned the Benue killings, describing them as a direct consequence of leadership failure in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Obi expressed heartbreak over the attacks, which claimed the lives of women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons.

He called for an urgent national response, warning against the growing normalisation of mass killings in the country.

Bi stated, “My heart is heavy as I learn of yet another horrific series of killings in Benue of women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons, all senselessly slain.

“This tragedy has become too common in our national life, and the Benue situation now calls for a national emergency.”

According to the former Anambra State governor, the scale of the killings go beyond isolated violence, but reflects systemic governance failure.

“Over 200 lives have reportedly been extinguished in a single onslaught, homes burnt, families shattered, communities left in ruin. This is not merely violence. It is a failure of leadership, a stain on our collective conscience,” Obi stated.

HURIWA Warns of Looming Ethnic War

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) issued a stern warning to the federal government, urging it to urgently halt the continuous attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen or risk widespread armed resistance by other ethnic groups in the country. 

The rights group described the recent massacre of over 200 persons in Benue State as a crime against humanity and a dangerous escalation that could spiral into nationwide ethnic violence.

HURIWA gave the warning in a press statement issued in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, following the bloody attack by herdsmen on the Tiv-speaking Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The group said despite prior intelligence from residents about the impending attack, the federal government and security agencies failed to intervene or deploy adequate forces to the area. 

HURIWA alleged that attackers stormed the communities from two flanks, overpowered local youths and police operatives, and then proceeded to open fire on defenceless civilians, including IDPs sheltering in market stalls.

HURIWA condemned what it termed the “persistent inaction” of the federal government, describing the security chiefs and the National Security Adviser as grossly incompetent and complicit. 

The association warned that should the government fail to act decisively to bring an end to the targeted killings allegedly carried out by armed Fulani insurgents, Nigeria might descend into an unprecedented civil crisis, as ethnic groups facing continued invasions might begin to arm themselves for self-defence.

Benue Youths Protest Killings

Benue State Youths converged at Wurukum Roundabout on Sunday morning to protest the killings of innocent people in Benue State by murderous Fulani herdsmen. But they were teargased by policemen deployed to the area.

The protests had been triggered by the gruesome attacks on Yelewata town yesterday by suspected herdsmen, which resulted in the deaths of almost 200 persons, including women and children, as well as the aged.

The protesters demanded action from Governor Hyacinth Alia and the federal government against the terrorists, who were on a rampage across the state.

The protesters had refused to be addressed by Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, who went personally to the protest venue.

The police commissioner initially sought to address the protesting youths but he was loudly condemned amid angry chants of “CP, Go To Yelewata”. 

And when he eventually addressed them, he was confronted with some questions that he declined to answer, stirring another round of anger.

It was also observed that while some military personnel arrived the venue of the protest, the youths continued to press their demands for action from government. 

An activist, Comrade Bemgba Iyortyum, wrote on his Facebook page, “I urge the youths to maintain their peaceful and orderly conduct as has been seen in the course of the protest so far, and to stand resolutely by their demands for action from government.

“Together we will win this war against the terrorists who seek to wipe us off the face of the earth and take over our land.”

With profound honour, I stand before this joint session of our National Assembly; a parliament that embodies the will of the Nigerian people.

2. Today, as I entered this grand edifice built from the sweat and toil of our democratic yearning, my heart stirred. It was a blend of accomplishment and resolve.

3. I felt a sense of collective accomplishment when I realised how far we had come as a nation. Since 1999, democracy has risen from the ashes and destitution of military rule to take its rightful place as the only mode of governance of our resilient and beloved people.

4. With every footstep I took through these hallowed halls up to the moment I now stand before you, I remembered that we still have much further to go.

5. To achieve this progress, we sought an elective office to lead this nation forward. Thus, I hereby affirm before our Merciful and Almighty God and all men my resolve to do all that I can to safeguard and build our democracy as the Divine hand intends for us to do.

6. Since 2018, we have celebrated Democracy Day on this day; to commemorate the sacrifices of the men and women who fought to restore democratic governance to Nigeria.

7. Let me pay tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari for reaching back into history to rectify a national misdeed by making June 12 Democracy Day and by officially acknowledging Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and his running mate, Babagana Kingibe, as the victors and thus duly elected President and Vice President respectively of Nigeria after the June 12, 1993 elections.

8. Year by year, election after election, every time we debate instead of battle, discuss instead of fight, and argue instead of destroy, we preserve the institutions of democracy. More importantly, we weave the culture of democracy into the very fabric of our nation.

9. Whilst Chief MKO Abiola is June 12’s central figure, we must not forget the long list of those who equally deserve to be called heroes of Nigerian democracy.

10. We must celebrate the courage of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola and Pa Alfred Rewane, both of whom were murdered by agents of military repression. We also remember the many civil rights activists, journalists, and politicians imprisoned, exiled, tossed aside, tortured and beaten by the military regime.

11. We remember Chief Anthony Enahoro, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Balarabe Musa, Ganiyu Dawodu, the journalist Bagauda Kaltho, and Commodore Ndubuisi Kanu. I mention these names not to exclude or degrade the profound contributions of anyone else, but to illustrate, through these few heroes, the universality of our pursuit of democracy.

12. The struggle was never the province of any one group or section of the country, it was pan-Nigerian in its conception and will be even more pan- Nigerian as we strive to perfect it.

13. It is fitting that I come to this chamber. You are the authors of the people’s law, and I must be their faithful implementer. While we may not always agree, we must forge a way to work together because this is what democracy demands of us. I pledge myself to this cooperation and ask that you do the same for the good of our people.

14. Mr. Chairman, the National Assembly has acted to uphold democratic ideals at every critical moment in our national history. In 2006, the 5th National Assembly protected our democracy against an unseemly third-term bid that would have ripped our constitution apart. In 2010, the National Assembly, through the doctrine of necessity, opened the door for then-Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to become the acting President following the illness of his predecessor.

15. Even under the military, the National Assembly tried to protect our democracy. After General Abacha took over power on November 17, 1993, and dissolved the National Assembly, some of us, led by Senator Ameh Ebute, the Senate President in the 3rd Republic, defied the General and his goons to reconvene in the Old Parliament Building in Lagos. We were jailed for our defiance.

16. On behalf of a grateful nation, I commend your invaluable role in lawmaking, oversight, and constituency representation.

17. At this point, I plead for your indulgence so that I may put a terrible rumour to bed.

18. To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error. At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria. I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC. Equally, my friends, we cannot blame anybody seeking to bail out of a sinking ship even without a life jacket.

19. Look at my political history. I would be the last person to advocate such a scheme. In 2003, when the then-governing party tried to sweep the nation clean of political opposition through plot and manipulation, I was the last of the progressive governors standing in my region.

20. In all their numbers and false grandeur, they boasted of ruling, not governing, Nigeria for the next half century or more. Where are they now?

21. Yet, I stood alone. My allies had been induced into defeat. My adversaries held all the cards that mortal man could carry. Even with all of that, they could not control our national destiny because fate is written from above. A greater power did not want Nigeria to become a one-party state back then. Nigeria will not become such a state now.

22. The failed effort to create a one-party state placed progressive political forces on a trajectory to form the APC. It put me on the trajectory which has brought me before you today. I dare not do such a favour to any political adversary by repeating the same mistake of political overreach.

23. A one-party state is not in the offing. Nor should it ever be. That said, we would be guilty of political malpractice if we closed the door on those from other parties who now seek to join the APC and I sincerely welcome our party’s newest members from Delta and Akwa Ibom States led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Pastor Umo Eno and other members of this National Assembly.

24. Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist. For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.

25. We must welcome and accept the diversity and number of political parties just as we welcome and embrace the diversity of our population. Our efforts must never be to eliminate political competition but to make that competition salutary to the national well-being by working across the political aisle whenever possible.

26. One area in which democracy calls us to work together, whether in the legislative or executive branch, whether in this or other political parties, is that of economic and social development.

27. Upon assuming office, my team and I moved to reform our ailing economy. We introduced fundamental reforms to correct structural imbalances that prevented maximum growth.

28. We are already seeing results. GDP grew by 3.4 per cent in 2024, with Q4 hitting 4.6 per cent, the highest quarter of growth in over a decade. Inflation is easing gradually, steadying the price of food staples like rice and beans. Our net foreign reserves have increased fivefold, and the Naira exchange rate has stabilised. Our balance of payments position is positive; our sovereign credit rating is improving as we continue to promote oil and non-oil exports. States now do not need to go about borrowing to pay salaries.

29. In less than one year, over one hundred thousand Nigerians, including thirty-five thousand civil servants, have benefited from affordable consumer credit through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), enabling them to purchase vehicles, light up and improve their homes and purchase life essentials. This July, we will launch a bold new initiative to empower four hundred thousand young Nigerians, including youth corpers, with consumer credit.

30. We are committed to giving more opportunities to young people through job creation and skills development. Through such programs as NELFUND, we are investing in education, vocational training, apprenticeships, and internships to ensure our youth are job-ready and future-ready.

31. In addition, we have embarked on an ambitious project to lay fibre optic cables across the nation, a transformative step toward bridging the digital divide and fostering greater connectivity. This initiative promises not only to enhance the speed and reliability of internet access but also to revolutionize how businesses operate, how students learn, and how communities stay connected. By extending this critical infrastructure, we are empowering entrepreneurs, enabling digital education, and providing the tools for our youth to compete in a globalized world.

32. Our “Nigeria First” policy will further enhance progress as we consolidate market-driven growth. The improved economic performance is encouraging and validates the soundness of our policy measures. Our medium-term growth target remains an economy growing at a 7 per cent clip with a stronger manufacturing base. We must learn to produce and grow most of our food and we are on the path to achieving food sovereignty.

33. These and other reforms have placed the economy on a more rational footing where critical decisions regarding large-scale investment can now be made.

34. I ask you, the legislature, to join me as we enter the second half of our term to put forth innovative legislation that further encourages industrial development and job creation in our urban centres while also drafting laws that improve food security and production.

35. To further underpin our economic vision, we introduced a comprehensive Tax Reform Package, a vital component of our economic re- engineering. I am deeply grateful to both chambers for your thorough consideration and deliberation of these bills, and I look forward to signing them into law soon.

36. Again, your collaboration across party lines on these bills has been a model of democratic partnership.

37. As elected leaders, we must continue to do more to make real the dream of Nigeria’s political and economic democracy.

38. We must be vigilant in expanding the political space. We must always value dialogue over dictatorship, persuasion over suppression and rights over might. Be tolerant and broad-minded in your legislative action regarding speech and civil liberties.

39. Do not be afraid to hear an unkind word spoken against you. Some of the best advice a politician gets sometimes comes from his most ferocious opponents. We dare not seek silence because the imposed silence of repressed voices breeds chaos and ill will, not the harmonics of democracy in the long term.

40. While malicious slander and libel should not go unattended, no one should bear the brunt of injustice for merely writing a bad report about me or calling me names. Democracy requires a fair degree of tolerance for harsh words and stinging insults. Call me names, call me whatever you will, and I will still call upon democracy to defend your right to do so. Mr. Senate President, Mr. Speaker, Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members.

41. Our nation is not perfect, but it is strong. Our democracy is not invincible, but it is alive. And this means our dream of a prosperous, happy nation is still within reach and worth fighting for.

42. Mr. Chairman, Nigeria is at an inflexion point, undergoing structural and fundamental change toward a secure future.

43. Our administration is fully committed to boosting the economy’s productive base. Through investment in critical infrastructure, roads, expansion of port operations, rail, and power we are creating a new environment in which industry and manufacturing can thrive. Our tax and fiscal policy reforms will streamline tax administration and eliminate burdensome and multiple taxes enabling our industrialists and entrepreneurs to operate in a more conducive environment.

44. Governance must work and deliver value to the people. As part of our tax reforms, we have provided small businesses with an exemption and established the Office of the Tax Ombudsman to ensure transparency and protect taxpayer rights. Digital tools now help us track performance and reduce waste. The Diaspora Bond and Non-Resident BVN are bringing Nigerians abroad into the national development fold.

45. In line with my promise during my New Year address to the nation, I recently appointed the board of directors of the newly established National Credit Guarantee Company. The company backed with 100 billion naira in initial capital; with BOI, which, by the way, is performing very well in supporting SMEs, NSIA, CreditCorp, and MOFI as stakeholders, will play a significant role in transforming the nation’s industrial landscape and reducing corruption.

46. National Security is the foundation of peace and progress. We have intensified security operations to reclaim communities from criminals and terrorists. We are better at coordinating intelligence, and inter-agency cooperation has improved. Our highways are safer, and we invest in technology and training to secure every inch of this country.

47. Let us take this opportunity to thank the men and women of our Armed Forces for their bravery in service of the nation. Their selfless dedication to protecting our sovereignty and ensuring the safety of citizens should serve as an inspiration to us all. As we celebrate the progress of our democracy, we must not forget the pivotal role they play in safeguarding our freedoms. For their courage and commitment, they deserve not only our gratitude but also our continued support, prayers and recognition.

48. Fellow compatriots, our achievements are not the work of one man. They are the result of a collective effort to make possible the Nigerian Dream. Yet, the journey is not over. We must work even harder to translate broad macroeconomic gains into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. We must stay the course, reject cynicism, and believe Nigeria can and will rise again.

49. As we mark a twenty-sixth year of unbroken democracy, it is right to honour those who have made sacrifices in the past, braving all the odds and the guns to ensure we have a regime of democracy in our country.

50. In this light, I announce the conferment of the posthumous national honour of CFR on Kudirat Abiola, the heroine of the June 12 struggle.

Already, senators and members of the House of Representatives have started arriving the Green Chambers expecting the President who is expected to address them on the occasion of June 12 for the first time.

Non-accredited people who were making attempts to enter the complex were turned back as armed security personnel were seen frisking all accredited journalists and other National Assembly staff members billed to carry out legislative activities in the chamber.

President Bola Tinubu yesterday, extended an open invitation to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. NyesomWike, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling that the doors of the ruling party remain wide open for Wike, who despite serving in his government is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tinubu acknowledged Wike’s influence and contributions while affirming that his eventual move to the ruling party would be warmly received whenever he chooses to make it official.

This was as Wike, assured the President that the coalition being planned against him by a group of politicians ahead of the 2027 election was doomed to fail.

Also yesterday, the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the last general election, Mr. Peter Obi, berated the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for spending N39 billion to renovate the International Conference Centre (ICC), which was on Tuesday, renamed after President Tinubu.

Likewise, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) described as brazen, the renaming of the ICC after a sitting president.

Speaking at the inauguration of Arterial Road Number N16 ShehuShagari Way, from Ring Road NnamdiAzikiwe to Arterial Road Number N20 Wole Soyinka Way in Abuja, President Tinubu declared:  “We have somebody in NyesomWike. He’s not a member of my party, not yet, but the day he changes his mind and registers with progressives, we will welcome him because we will enjoy him in singing “as e dey pain them, e dey sweet us.”

Tinubu pledged not to go back in service to the people by providing necessary infrastructure nationwide despite strong opposition by political naysayers.

The President said: “I reaffirm our commitment that we will continue to build, we will continue to serve the people, no matter how much the naysayers pursue their politics.”

He stressed that it was through investment in various sectors that the potential of the country could be unlocked.

According to him, “Infrastructure is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is the bedrock of national competitiveness, growth, social integration and economic opportunity. We recognise that our nation’s development is linked to the quality of infrastructure, connecting people, cities and industry. There is no way industrialisation will flourish without good roads.

“We are investing in roads, rail, power, healthcare, education and digital infrastructure. It is only through this coordinated and integrated development that we can unlock Nigeria’s full potential. I promise you, we will.”

Tinubu urged the community to protect the inaugurated road, saying the government has done its part by ensuring due completion of the road for the use of motorists.

“The road belongs to the community and citizens of Abuja and to us as the federal government. I urge you to protect it and use it wisely. The government has played its part, we did not ignore it, we did not worry about protest,” he added.

The President lauded Wike and his team for the good work they have been doing to give Abuja a new look through positive development in the last two years.

“I commend the Minister of FCT, NyesomWike, his team, because he could not work alone, he could not achieve this alone without your collaboration as a team builder, a team player, it is impossible, but you have proved that teamship is the hallmark of good leadership,” he said.

In his remarks, Wike assured Tinubu that the coalition orchestrated against him ahead of the 2027 election was doomed to failure.

He said the President’s good work had deflated the force in the coalition, members which according to him have been complaining.

“I hardly watch some stations but sometimes, I am spiritually touched to just tune and start watching. This morning I was touched and was watching. I didn’t know that people can be pained.

“And now I know some such people are pained. I now must continue to give them high blood pressure. That’s my job. I’ll be happy every time, moving, laughing, and they will be there fighting and shouting and killing themselves.

“So, Mr. President, we want to thank you that we are part of this, what is going on, the revolution that is going on. Your good work has killed the coalition. I was thinking that, truly, there would be a coalition. So, I told my people, make sure that every national television must be hooked in so that they can see what is happening every day,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister also conveyed the appreciation of the FCT residents to Tinubu over ongoing projects in the territory, which he said was in recognition of the efforts of the President to provide infrastructure that will ameliorate socio-economic challenges.

He, however, knocked the opposition, describing them as people who were disgruntled and never happy with what the administration was doing.

“Like you said yesterday, there are some people, whatever you do, they will never be happy. They were born not to be happy, and so there is nothing you can do about it.

“But those who appreciate, who are happy, you can see how elated they are. That tells you that the day you go to the satellite town, what will happen, because they have never seen it before. It is unbelievable.”

He noted that the contractor, CGC, has confidence in the government that it would be paid, which informed why it agreed to execute the contract without mobilisation before the contract was formally approved by the Federal Executive Council last month.

Wike assured Tinubu that by his third anniversary in office next year, virtually all the contracts he awarded as the chairman of the Federal Executive Council would have been finished and no contractor owed for executed job.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has berated the FCTA for spending N39 billion in the renovation of the ICC.

Obi was described the renovation of the conference as a wasteful venture, urged the federal government to always invest in ventures like education that would be profitable to the youths in the future.

He said this on a day he donated ten laptops to the Federal Government Girls’ Secondary school in Chibok, Borno State

The former Anambra State Governor equally donated N2 million for the sinking of a borehole in the secondary school where school girls were kidnapped in 2014 by the Boko Haram,

Speaking during the donation to the school, Obi expressed worries that the FCTA could afford to claim that it renovated an existing structure that was in good shape with N39 billion.

He described it as a waste and misplacement of government priority where whereas there were schools in the country where such funds should have been invested for the welfare and educational benefits of children.

According to Obi, ‘’ the N39 billion used to renovate the ICC would have been better used on issues that would benefit the school children who are in dire need of such investment.

‘’N39 billion would have been used to procure thousands and thousands of computers that would have benefited the schools because the children who are leaders would have benefited from it. They are the leaders of tomorrow.

‘’ As we talk, teachers in the Federal Capital Territory are on strike for three months protesting months of non-payment of salaries.

‘’This was one of the things I did when I was the Governor of Anambra State, I made it to the extent that ten students used one computer,” he added.

Obi said the donation would have been done in Chibok community, but he was warned that there was a security risk to do so because of the security situation in the area.

The facilitator of the donations, Mrs. Alisha Yusufu, said the Chibok community got in touch with her and solicited for help to improve computer literacy in the school on May 31, this year, and she immediately got in touch with Obi who quickly offered the donations.

The leader of the Chibok community who received the ten computer laptops, two Laser printers pledged to ensure that the items were put to use for the maximum benefits of the the students.

In the same vein, the CUPP described as brazen the renaming of the ICC after a sitting president.

It also condemned what it described as reckless expenditure in refurbishing of the already functional ICC by the FCTA, while critical sectors like education and healthcare in the FCT were crumbling.

A statement signed by the National Secretary, CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh, said the misallocation of resources, coupled with the brazen renaming of public institutions after President Tinubu, “exposes a disturbing focus on self-glorification over nation-building.”

The coalition said while the facility was built in 1991 under General Ibrahim Babangida for a modest N240 million, the same Conference Centre was alleged to have been renovated at an outrageous cost of N39 billion.

According to CUPP, the ICC was testament to prudent investment in national infrastructure when it was built, adding that General Babangida, despite overseeing its construction from the ground up, never sought to immortalise his name on this landmark.

In stark contrast, the coalition said Tinubu, whose administration merely renovated it, decided to rename it the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

“This pattern extends to other public assets, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic.

“Such actions reek of personal branding and a desperate bid to rewrite history through paint and concrete, rather than through transformative leadership, “ it said

It said the money squandered on the unnecessary facelift could have funded a new, state-of-the-art national monument or addressed the dire crises plaguing the FCT.

“Primary school children have been out of school for three months due to underfunding and neglect. Area Councils and Primary Healthcare Centers have been paralysed by months-long strikes, leaving communities without essential services.

“These are the real emergencies demanding urgent attention, yet the administration prioritises vanity projects over the welfare of Nigerians.

“While citizens grapple with soaring inflation, insecurity, failing healthcare, and a collapsing education system, the Tinubu administration appears more committed to immortalizing a name than solving these pressing challenges.

“This is not leadership—it is a shameful betrayal of public trust. For context, N39 billion is not just a renovation budget; it is a staggering leap from the N240 million used to build the ICC from scratch. This gross mismanagement of resources demands accountability.

“CUPP calls for an immediate investigation into the FCTA’s expenditure on the ICC renovation and a reorientation of priorities toward education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

“We urge President Tinubu to focus on building a legacy through tangible solutions—schools that educate, hospitals that heal, and industries that employ—rather than plastering his name on public assets. Nigerians deserve leadership that uplifts the nation, not monuments to personal ambition.

“The time for misplaced priorities is over. Let us build a Nigeria that works for all, not a gallery of self-glorification,” it said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called off the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 earlier scheduled for tomorrow.
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced Wednesday in a statement.
The nationwide address was one of the activities lined up to mark Democracy Day.
The Director, Information & Public Relations, Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, said in the statement that the cancellation was because the President was also scheduled to attend the National Assembly Joint Session, the same day.
He said President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly.
According to the statement, all other plans remained in order as announced earlier.

The President said the idea would be welcomed even though Nyesom Wike had not yet declared his membership of the party.
He stated that Wike’s membership would bouy APC while the opposition would continue to writhe in pains.
