INEC Urges Leaders to Mobilise Voters for  Registration in Sokoto

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sokoto State, has called on traditional, religious, and opinion leaders to sensitise their citizens on the importance of participating in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise.

Meanwhile, the Samuel Ajose Foundation has donated essential equipment to all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State.

This, the foundation also made  donation available  to support continuous voter registration and drive party membership ahead of the 2027 elections.

At a stakeholders’ briefing held yesterday  at the commission’s headquarters in Sokoto, Resident Electoral Commissioner Umar Yusuf Garba, emphasised the significance of the exercise in strengthening the country’s democratic system.

He enjoined the  eligible Nigerian citizens to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. 

He noted that the exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, aims to expand voter access and streamline the registration process across the country.

According to the commissioner, eligible persons for the voter registration include new voters who have attained the age of 18 years or above and have not previously registered to vote.

 Additionally, citizens who wish to transfer their voting rights to another polling unit, registration area, or ward are also eligible. Nigerians who have lost or damaged their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and need to replace them can also participate in the exercise.

 He maintained that the online registration has commenced, while manual registration is slated for September, 2025 in all local government areas and the state headquarters of the commission.

The CVR exercise is expected to run until August 30, 2026, providing ample opportunity for citizens to register. 

The REC has assured citizens that the exercise will be accessible, inclusive, and transparent. He also warned against multiple registrations, which remain prohibited under electoral guidelines.

Citizens are encouraged to participate in the CVR exercise to ensure their voices are heard in the democratic process. With the exercise ongoing, Nigerians can take advantage of this opportunity to register and make their votes count in future elections.

Meanwhile, the Samuel Ajose Foundation has donated essential equipment to all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State.

This, the foundation did, alongside a cash donation, to support continuous voterregistration and drive party membership ahead of the 2027 elections.

The donation, which was done at the Lagos Island East LCDA last weekend, saw laptops, fans, printers, generators a,nd internet WiFi handed over to the local government,, which aims to facilitate voter registration ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Foundation, Samuel Ajose, emphasised the importance of voters’ registration, noting that the strength of any political party lies in the number of people registered on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal.

Ajose highlighted common challenges, such as long queues and informal fees, discouraging citizens from registering for a Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

To address these obstacles, Ajose stated: “We decided to support registration efforts with laptops, fans, printers, internet facilities, and generators.

“Once the equipment reaches all 57 LGAs, it will encourage people to come out and register without difficulties.”

Ajose further pointed out that Lagos has over 22 million residents and expressed hope that INEC could successfully register 18 million people before the exercise closes.

The Foundation has also pre-installed six months’ worth of internet service and donated N200,000 to help each secretariat run the registration process efficiently.

The Ikeja APC chairman and the chairman of the Conference of 57 APC LGA Chairmen, Mayegun Dally-Adeokun, welcomed the donation, saying: “Today, we see a man who has supported 57 LGAs with materials crucial for the ongoing voters’ registration exercise..

“This gesture will encourage us to do more, especially in ensuring young people register to exercise their civic duty, and help those who are now eligible or have misplaced their voter cards.

Also, the state Deputy Chairman, APC Lagos, Mayegun Moshood, described the donation as marvelous, saying: “I am dumbfounded by this gesture; it’s extraordinary for a single individual to make such a contribution. We’ve encouraged all local government chairmen to support the LGAs in accessing these kinds of equipment, and for someone to step forward, I doff my hat for him.”

The Chairman of Lagos Island East LCDA, Muyibi Folawiyo, praised the Foundation’s support, calling the donated equipment critical for registration.

Folawiyo saat: “We welcome these tools to aid registration and pledge our support for a seamless process. While we are party members, on the matter of PVC registration, we represent the community.

“This donation is for all Lagosians, regardless of party affiliation, and the equipment will be strategically placed to ensure access for everyone.”

NACCIMA, Nigeria Customs Forge Strategic Partnership to Boost Trade Facilitation

In a renewed effort to strengthen Nigeria’s trade environment, the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, cross-border commerce, and the ease of doing business in the country.

The initiative was formalised during a courtesy and working visit on Thursday by NACCIMA National President and Chairman of the Organized Private Sector of Nigeria (OPSN), Engr. Jani Ibrahim, to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja.

Discussions during the high-level meeting focused on deepening collaboration between the private sector and Customs, with particular emphasis on improving customs formalities, streamlining cross-border trade processes, and accelerating the automation of customs services to better serve Nigerian businesses.

Both parties commended each other’s commitment to cooperation, describing the engagement as a pivotal step toward achieving a more efficient, transparent, and business-friendly trade ecosystem in Nigeria.

Speaking after the meeting, officials from both NACCIMA and the NCS expressed optimism that the partnership would usher in a new era of synergy between the public and private sectors in trade operations — aligning with Nigeria’s broader economic growth agenda.

“This is not just a visit — it’s a signal of our shared commitment to improving the trade facilitation framework in Nigeria,” said one senior official. “We believe this collaboration will contribute meaningfully to national economic development.”

The move is part of ongoing efforts by the Organized Private Sector and government agencies to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, enhance revenue generation, and position Nigeria as a competitive player in regional and global trade.

Otu Calls for FG’s Support on Nutrition, Health Reforms  

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu,  has restated his administration’s commitment to a people-centered government, with a special focus on nutrition, preventive healthcare, and education, while calling for greater federal support to sustain reforms.

Speaking  while receiving the Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Mrs. Uju Rochas-Anwuka, in Calabar, Out governor said his administration deliberately designed its policies to place citizens at the center of development, especially in sectors critical to human capital growth.

Otu said: “Our agenda was very clear from the beginning; we want a people’s government here. Everything we do places the people at the center. Education and health are the two key areas that, if not working well, no society can make progress.”

He explained that his administration prioritised nutrition and preventive healthcare as the foundation for long-term development, noting that efforts have already yielded measurable results.

 “Since we started strengthening our nutrition sector, we have seen a steady decline in infant morbidity and mortality rates,” he said.

Governor Otu highlighted some of the interventions introduced by his government, including fully paid maternity and paternity leave, support for parents to nurture their babies, and plans to fortify staple foods such as rice with vitamins. He added that Cross River was also exploring the expansion of school feeding programmes to reach more children.

“Preventive health is far more effective than tackling ailments after they occur. That is why we are investing in nutrition, early childcare, and food security to build a strong immune base right from infancy,” he explained.

Governor Otu thanked the presidential aide for the visit, assuring her  that Cross River State remains committed to reforms that will improve health, education, and the overall wellbeing of its people.

In her remarks, Mrs. Rochas-Anwuka described Nigeria’s malnutrition crisis as a national emergency, ranking the country 1st in Africa and 2nd globally for child malnutrition. She warned that annual losses due to malnutrition exceed $1.5 billion, undermining human capital and national development.

“The Nutrition 774 Initiative was conceived to provide a unified response to Nigeria’s malnutrition crisis, elevating nutrition as a national priority,” she said. “It is a multi-sectoral, community-based framework established to improve nutritional outcomes across the 774 Local Government Areas of the country.”

According to her, the initiative is anchored on a five-phase Strategic Plan that prioritizes actions to strengthen governance structures, ensure accountability, and guarantee long-term sustainability. She added that each state council on nutrition is expected to provide overall leadership, policy direction, and oversight to drive the implementation of the N774 initiative.

She commended the Cross River State Government for making budgetary provisions for nutrition, noting that such commitment would strengthen local systems and align with national priorities.

“The vision is to achieve a well-nourished and healthy Nigerian population through strengthened local systems and coordinated national action on nutrition,” she said.
