Former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has claimed that the United States President-elect, Donald Trump, is threatening Canada and Mexico like Vladimir Putin is doing against Ukraine.

Sani made the comparison in a post on his X handle on Wednesday.

The ex-lawmaker maintained that Canada’s sovereignty must be respected.

He said: “The way President Trump is threatening Canada and Mexico looks like that of Putin against Ukraine. Canada’s sovereignty must be respected. If neighbours are treated this way, how will others be?”

The statement comes after Trump, at a news conference earlier on Tuesday, said he would consider using “economic force” to join Canada and the United States together.

Trump also said that he would move to try to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
