Archbishop Amoo, declared this on Thursday at the 26th Provincial Council Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion Ecclesiastical Province of Kwara state, held at Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

According to the cleric, “The country is besieged by a variety of security threats, ranging from banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, to insurgency across various parts of the nation.

“We are also witnessing conflicts between farmers and harders, which have brought untold hardship to many communities with several families rendered homeless and their means of livelihood completely disrupted.This has impacted negatively on the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation.

“The inflation index is on the soaring state and unemployment is rising, which has left a significant number of citizens struggling to meet their basic needs.

“Unfortunately for us, we cannot see any serious attempt by the government to improve our livelihood. Right from the first day of this government, it has been woes upon woes with promises that were never meant to be fulfilled.

“The abrupt removal of the petrol subsidy without proper economic controls was a direct hit on the average Nigerians,” he added.

Archbishop Israel, asserted that the collapse of Nigeria’s foreign exchange rate, poor implementation of government policies and the unfortunate compromise of some key arms of government more especially the legislature have further brought us to a more sorry state.

He argued that “The last general elections across the nation and the manner of conduct of ensuring elections tribunal activities showed that the judiciary is no longer the hope of the common man.

“All of these have climaxed to our hopelessness as a nation. It has been bad before, but now the situation is both hopeless and unbearable to say the least.

“It is very disheartening how visionless some of our political leaders are, some of them are not even thinking of how to address some of these unfortunate situations of our nation, and to save the nation from anarchy but on how to win in the coming elections.

“There are lots of internal party tensions, cross-carpeting, back stabbing of political opponents and abuse of the constitution of our nation, all in the bid to hold power endlessly.

“The youth no longer believe that they are the leaders of tomorrow as those in government have refused to leave office. What we see is recycling of the same old people with change of portfolios and political nomenclatures.

“Our survival as a nation is only in the hands of God as every index of a sustainable nation has disintegrated, and no sector of the economy is working as it were, education is at its abysmal state, industrialization is low paced with the country virtually importing every product in the market,” he further noted.

President Bola Tinubu has granted a posthumous pardon to former Nigerian nationalist and co-founder of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), Dr Herbert Macaulay and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Major General Mamman Vatsa
Vatsa, a poet, who was sentenced to death over a treason charge in 1986 was among the 17 people who received presidential pardons following the endorsement of the National Council of State, which met in Abuja on Thursday.
According to a statement issued on Thursday evening by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu also granted a posthumous pardon to Herbert Macaulay, a Nigerian nationalist and co-founder, along with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). Macaulay was the party’s first president, which played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s struggle for independence. However, in 1913, Macaulay was believed unjustly convicted by the British colonialists and banned from public office. Macaulay died in 1946, but the stigma of being an ex-convict was not exorcised from his records until now.
The President also pardoned four former convicts, including former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, Mrs Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barrister Hussaini Umar and Ayinla Saadu Alanamu.
They were pardoned to enable them to integrate into society, having demonstrated sufficient remorse. Nweke Francis Chibueze, serving a life sentence for cocaine, was pardoned, along with Dr Nwogu Peters, who had served 12 out of his 17-year sentence for fraud.
The Ogoni Nine: Ken Saro Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel and John Kpuine were formally pardoned.
At the same time, the President awarded national honours to the Ogoni Four- Chief Albert Badey, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Samuel Orage, and Theophilus Orage.
In exercising his constitutional power of mercy, President Tinubu granted clemency to 82 inmates and reduced the prison terms of 65 others. He gave a reprieve for seven inmates on the death row by commuting their sentences to life imprisonment.
President Tinubu acted on the recommendations of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy(PACPM). The committee has 12 members, with the Attorney General and Justice Minister, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, as chairman. The other members are Chief Akinlolu Olujinmi, CON; Prof. Alkasum Abba; Prof. (Mrs.) Nike Y. Sidikat Ijaiya; Justice Augustine B. Utsaha; and the Secretary, Dr Onwusoro Maduka, a former Permanent Secretary.
The institutional representatives on the Committee are: the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs; representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Correctional Service, National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The committee’s final report was presented to the Council of State on Thursday in Abuja, as required by the constitution.
The report noted, “A total of 175 inmates were interviewed, and 62 applications were received on behalf of 119 inmates considered by the committee, making it a total of 294.
“One hundred and sixty of the inmates interviewed were male, while 15 were female. Eighty-two inmates were recommended for clemency; two (2) for pardon; sixty-five (65) inmates for reduction of their terms of imprisonment, and seven (7) inmates on death row for commutation to life imprisonment.
“Also, fifteen (15) ex-convicts were recommended for Presidential Pardon, eleven (11) of them are deceased (including Ogoni 9). The Ogoni four (4) were also recommended for the Post-Humous National Honours Award.
“On the whole, a total of one hundred and seventy-five (175) beneficiaries are recommended.’’
The committee had acted on the following criteria: old age (60 years and above); ill health likely to terminate in death; young persons (16 years and below); long-term convicts who have served prison terms of 10 years or more with a good record; and convicts serving three years or more
“Those who have been in Custodial centres, learnt sustainable vocational trades capable of keeping them away from crime; those who are adjudged remorseful; those who Correctional Officers recommended for exemplary behaviour and Nigerian prisoners deported from other countries.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, inaugurated the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM) on January 15, 2025, as a significant step towards promoting justice, rehabilitation, and human rights in Nigeria.

According to him, the allegations were unfounded and capable of misrepresenting Nigeria’s security situation before the international community.

“What Ted Cruz and co said is not true. It is not true to say Christians are being persecuted in Nigeria

“This thing came from Ted Cruz and it dates back to 2020. In fact, Donald Trump, in his first term, designated us as CPC — Countries of Particular Concern — where a group of religious believers of any type are being persecuted. That means sanctions will be applied,” Ndume stated.

The longest serving senator maintained that insecurity in Nigeria should not be reduced to religious persecution, stressing that victims of attacks across the country cut across different faiths and ethnicities.

The Borno-born politician urged international observers to seek accurate information rather than rely on misleading reports.

Ndume’s comments came in reaction to a statement by Senator Cruz, who had accused the Nigerian government of enabling a “massacre” against Christians.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Cruz claimed that about 50,000 Christians have been killed since 2009, while over 2,000 schools and 18,000 churches were destroyed by “Islamist armed groups.”

Cruz also announced the introduction of a bill in the US Senate seeking sanctions against Nigerian officials whom he accused of “ignoring and even facilitating the mass murder of Christians.”

The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, has presented cheques worth over N102m to 80 families of deceased police officers in the state.

Presenting beneficiaries with the cheques at the Police Officers’ Mess, Minna, Elleman said the gesture was in continuation of the IGP’s welfare initiative under the Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Schemes for all police officers.

According to him, “The cheques, to the tune of ₦102m, were from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as part of the welfare package for families of deceased personnel, and a token of appreciation to serve as succour to the families they left behind.”

The CP entreated the families to accept the little gesture as a sign of love, and as an indication that they are not forgotten but always in our hearts.

He prayed for the repose and forgiveness of the departed souls whilst urging the families to make judicious use of the token received from the IGP, while also urging them to always consider the Police Command as their second home for any future assistance.

The CP was assisted during the presentation by DCP Ibrahim Adamu and DCP Aminu Garba, who also presented some of the cheques to over eighty (80) families/next of kin in attendance.

The families appreciated the IGP and the CP for the kind gesture, stating that it has wiped away their tears and given them renewed hope in their despair.

Mr. Samuel Shashere and Mrs. Esther Guyil, both beneficiaries, prayed that God continues to bless the Nigeria Police Force whilst admonishing others to make the best use of the resources.

According to Mrs. Esther Guyil, “We appreciate God for the intervention, and I have been grieved before now, but this gesture will serve as consolation for my loss.”

She added that although death is inevitable, she prayed for God’s protection so that all officers live to complete their service years.
