Alia locks out civil servants for coming late to work
Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, on Wednesday locked out several civil servants at the state secretariat for coming late to office.
The governor took the action during an unscheduled visit to the state secretariat in Makurdi.
Alia visited the secretariat at about 10:35 am to inspect ongoing renovation works, including the installation of new lights, when security personnel attached to his convoy locked the gates which prevented several civil servants to access their offices.
He toured several ministries at the secretariat and expressed unhappiness about truancy as commissioners and other senior officials were absent from work.
Alia addressed a section of civil servants and expressed his concerns about their poor attitude to their duties.
He said, “With what you are doing, you are creating a vicious circle for your families. You cannot get money and be uplifted because you are cheats and because of the effect of what you are doing.
“The work I do is not for me, but for those who don’t know that I am the governor and those who will see me and not recognise me.
“I’m appealing to you because I have a quick way of getting your names and firing you as I have the power to do so. I am speaking to you as a priest and not as governor and telling you the dangers of what you are doing.
“It is not about me. Who is government? All of you here are the government. Even in the family, somebody governs the home and there are rules. And in every government there are rules. I am not frustrated but I do not want you to be doomed.
“See what you can do if not for yourselves but for the people you are caring for and are behind you because they are the ones to take the heat.”

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has mandated telecommunication operators to prioritize service improvement including network reliability, speed and accessibility, in the planned tariff adjustments.
DAILY POST reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC recently approved a 50 percent adjustment in telecommunications tariffs in the country.
FCCPC in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Ondanje Ijagwu said although it acknowledges the economic pressures faced by telecom operators, including increasing operational costs, “consumer interests remain paramount”.
According to FCCPC, the rationale for the increase must be reflected in better services for consumers, stressing that customers rely on telecommunications for both personal and business purposes.
It urged the operators to allocate increased revenues responsibly, “with an emphasis on infrastructure development and service delivery improvements”.
“Clear mechanisms must be established to monitor how these funds are utilised, ensuring that consumers directly benefit from the adjustments.
“Operators must also clearly communicate the rationale for the tariff adjustments to consumers. This includes ensuring that consumers are fully informed about the nature of the changes, their benefits, and how they align with efforts to improve service delivery and infrastructure.
“The MoU between the FCCPC and NCC provides a unified framework to oversee the implementation of this tariff adjustment in a manner that meets the needs of consumers.
“The partnership ensures that the increase does not become a justification for exploitative practices but rather an opportunity to foster fairness, transparency, and accountability in the telecommunications sector,” FCCPC added.

The Chief Safety Officer, CSO, of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chief Ken Chukwurah, has issued a stern warning to staff and students against accepting free rides after work.
He said this should be discouraged considering the spate of insecurity in the state.
Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists, Chukwurah expressed concern over the increasing number of staff and students who habitually stand along major roads, hoping for free rides from passing vehicles.
He cautioned that this practice could inadvertently expose them to grave dangers, including robbery, kidnapping and even ritual killings.
He said: “We have observed with dismay the alarming trend of the university staff and students accepting rides from unknown individuals.
“While the intention may be to save transportation costs, these seemingly harmless gestures can have dire consequences, as some criminals and kidnappers deliberately drive around looking for unsuspecting victims to prey on.”
He emphasized that accepting rides from strangers significantly increases the risk of falling prey to criminal elements.

The former French Minister of Transport, Mr. Djebbari Jean-Baptiste, has hinted at the desire of investors from his country to invest in the transport sector of Ogun State, especially the agro-cargo airport.
Other areas of interest for the investors, according to Jean-Baptiste, are the dry port, the Olokola Sea Port, and the railway system.
He spoke while fielding questions from newsmen after a closed-door meeting with the Governor Dapo Abiodun in Abeokuta.
Jean-Baptiste expressed satisfaction at the level of infrastructural facilities at the airport, saying it drew the attention of French investors.
He said: “This is one of the several meetings I have had with the governor over the years. We discussed aviation-related items owing to the fact that the state is developing the Gateway International Airport, the dry port, and all the major infrastructural projects related to transport.
“We have many French operators who are involved in transportation, logistics, and aviation. There are many interested in investing in Nigeria and Ogun State because Ogun State is seen as a very dynamic and reliable partner.”
He said he had met the governor on multiple times, including during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to France in December, and had offered to visit and see how he could contribute to the state’s transport and aviation development.
According to the former transport minister, during the two-day visit, his team would tour the Gateway International Airport, assess the opportunities regarding the dry port, the sea port and the railway system, with a view to sharing experiences, adding that “because I can see your products are developing very quickly and booming, the demography and market demand are very high”.
Speaking earlier, the governor said his administration had created a master plan for multimodal transport to help the state build its transport systems to boost the economy.
Abiodun said, “We took advantage of the rail infrastructure that the federal Government has invested in; that is what informed our Gateway International Airport, and that is also what has informed the construction of our dry port and our upcoming seaport.
“We believe that cargo destined for Ogun State or other states around can be put on the train and transported to Kajola and cleared there. It will make for a more efficient Tin Can and Apapa ports and, of course, ease the troubles that manufacturers here have experienced in the past.
“Our airport, in terms of physical construction, has been completed; the runway is 100 percent completed, and the control tower is 100 percent completed with all the equipment installed. The terminal building is maybe 90 percent completed; it is completed physically, and they are doing the fit-out in terms of fittings. We have a temporary terminal building,” he said.
The governor said commercial operations would have started in the last quarter but for the non-installation of navigational equipment like the runway lights, emphasizing that the aim of his administration is to make it the best-equipped airport in Nigeria.
“The airport, as I told you, is an ecosystem. It is situated in what we call our aerotropolis, so we have a Special Agro-Processing Zone there, and we also have the Nigeria Customs and Excise Village because we envision the airport to have a system where Customs and Excise can process things very fast,” he added.

![](https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*French%20investors%20eye%20Ogun%20agro-cargo%20airport,%20others*nThe%20former%20French%20Minister%20of%20Transport,%20Mr.%20Djebbari%20Jean-Baptiste,%20has%20hinted%20at%20the%20desire%20of%20investors%20from%20his%20country%20to%20invest%20in%20the%20transport%20sector%20of%20Ogun%20State,%20especially%20the%20agro-cargo%20airport.%20Other%20areas%20of%20interest%20for%20the%20investors,%20according%20to%20Jean-Baptiste,%20are%20the%20dry%20port,%20the%20Olokola%20Sea%20Port,%20and%20the%20railway%20system.%20He%20French%20investors%20eye%20Ogun%20agro-cargo%20airport,%20others%20<!--%20wp:html%20--><p><img%20width="767"%20height="431"%20src="https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/bus.jpg"%20class="webfeedsFeaturedVisual%20wp-post-image"%20alt=""%20loading="lazy"%20/></p><p>The%20former%20French%20Minister%20of%20Transport,%20Mr.%20Djebbari%20Jean-Baptiste,%20has%20hinted%20at%20the%20desire%20of%20investors%20from%20his%20country%20to%20invest%20in%20the%20transport%20sector%20of%20Ogun%20State,%20especially%20the%20agro-cargo%20airport.</p><p>Other%20areas%20of%20interest%20for%20the%20investors,%20according%20to%20Jean-Baptiste,%20are%20the%20dry%20port,%20the%20Olokola%20Sea%20Port,%20and%20the%20railway%20system.</p><p>He%20spoke%20while%20fielding%20questions%20from%20newsmen%20after%20a%20closed-door%20meeting%20with%20the%20Governor%20Dapo%20Abiodun%20in%20Abeokuta.</p><p>Jean-Baptiste%20expressed%20satisfaction%20at%20the%20level%20of%20infrastructural%20facilities%20at%20the%20airport,%20saying%20it%20drew%20the%20attention%20of%20French%20investors.</p><p>He%20said:%20“This%20is%20one%20of%20the%20several%20meetings%20I%20have%20had%20with%20the%20governor%20over%20the%20years.%20We%20discussed%20aviation-related%20items%20owing%20to%20the%20fact%20that%20the%20state%20is%20developing%20the%20Gateway%20International%20Airport,%20the%20dry%20port,%20and%20all%20the%20major%20infrastructural%20projects%20related%20to%20transport.</p><p>“We%20have%20many%20French%20operators%20who%20are%20involved%20in%20transportation,%20logistics,%20and%20aviation.%20There%20are%20many%20interested%20in%20investing%20in%20Nigeria%20and%20Ogun%20State%20because%20Ogun%20State%20is%20seen%20as%20a%20very%20dynamic%20and%20reliable%20partner.”</p><p>He%20said%20he%20had%20met%20the%20governor%20on%20multiple%20times,%20including%20during%20President%20Bola%20Tinubu’s%20state%20visit%20to%20France%20in%20December,%20and%20had%20offered%20to%20visit%20and%20see%20how%20he%20could%20contribute%20to%20the%20state’s%20transport%20and%20aviation%20development.</p><p>According%20to%20the%20former%20transport%20minister,%20during%20the%20two-day%20visit,%20his%20team%20would%20tour%20the%20Gateway%20International%20Airport,%20assess%20the%20opportunities%20regarding%20the%20dry%20port,%20the%20sea%20port%20and%20the%20railway%20system,%20with%20a%20view%20to%20sharing%20experiences,%20adding%20that%20“because%20I%20can%20see%20your%20products%20are%20developing%20very%20quickly%20and%20booming,%20the%20demography%20and%20market%20demand%20are%20very%20high”.</p><p>Speaking%20earlier,%20the%20governor%20said%20his%20administration%20had%20created%20a%20master%20plan%20for%20multimodal%20transport%20to%20help%20the%20state%20build%20its%20transport%20systems%20to%20boost%20the%20economy.</p><p>Abiodun%20said,%20“We%20took%20advantage%20of%20the%20rail%20infrastructure%20that%20the%20federal%20Government%20has%20invested%20in;%20that%20is%20what%20informed%20our%20Gateway%20International%20Airport,%20and%20that%20is%20also%20what%20has%20informed%20the%20construction%20of%20our%20dry%20port%20and%20our%20upcoming%20seaport.</p><p>“We%20believe%20that%20cargo%20destined%20for%20Ogun%20State%20or%20other%20states%20around%20can%20be%20put%20on%20the%20train%20and%20transported%20to%20Kajola%20and%20cleared%20there.%20It%20will%20make%20for%20a%20more%20efficient%20Tin%20Can%20and%20Apapa%20ports%20and,%20of%20course,%20ease%20the%20troubles%20that%20manufacturers%20here%20have%20experienced%20in%20the%20past.</p><p>“Our%20airport,%20in%20terms%20of%20physical%20construction,%20has%20been%20completed;%20the%20runway%20is%20100%20percent%20completed,%20and%20the%20control%20tower%20is%20100%20percent%20completed%20with%20all%20the%20equipment%20installed.%20The%20terminal%20building%20is%20maybe%2090%20percent%20completed;%20it%20is%20completed%20physically,%20and%20they%20are%20doing%20the%20fit-out%20in%20terms%20of%20fittings.%20We%20have%20a%20temporary%20terminal%20building,”%20he%20said.</p><p>The%20governor%20said%20commercial%20operations%20would%20have%20started%20in%20the%20last%20quarter%20but%20for%20the%20non-installation%20of%20navigational%20equipment%20like%20the%20runway%20lights,%20emphasizing%20that%20the%20aim%20of%20his%20administration%20is%20to%20make%20it%20the%20best-equipped%20airport%20in%20Nigeria.</p><p>“The%20airport,%20as%20I%20told%20you,%20is%20an%2
