Gun battle erupts in Geidam as insurgents clash with soldiers
Suspected Boko Haram militants have reportedly launched an attack on Geidam community in Yobe State.
This assault comes shortly after an earlier attack on a market in Ngalda community earlier in the week, which left seven people dead.
According to local residents, the sound of heavy gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. and lasted nearly two hours.
The confrontation between the insurgents and soldiers resulted in the death of one attacker, with some weapons seized from the group.
Currently, security forces are conducting mop-up operations in the area to secure the community.
However, the attack has not been officially claimed by Boko Haram or any other terror group. Police in the state have described the incident as a robbery, stating that the assailants targeted POS operators in the market, stealing money and valuables.

United States President Donald Trump has said he’s open to the possibility of Elon Musk purchasing TikTok.
TikTok was recently shut down in the US following a federal ban over national security concerns tied to its Chinese ownership.
The ban, which took effect on Sunday, temporarily forced TikTok offline, leaving over 170 million US users without access to the platform.
On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order delaying the enforcement of the ban by 75 days, allowing TikTok to resume operations.
Addressing journalists after signing the order, Trump said US should receive 50 percent of any proceeds from the potential sale of TikTok in a joint venture proposition.
“I have met with the owners of TikTok, the big owners. So, what I am thinking about saying to somebody is ‘buy it and give half to the United States of America.
“I would be, if he (Musk) wanted to buy it. I’d like Larry to buy it, too.
“I have the right to make a deal. The deal I think is this. TikTok is worthless if it doesn’t get a US permit. With a permit it’s worth like a trillion dollars.
“So what I’m thinking about saying to somebody is ‘buy it and give half to the United States of America and we’ll give you a permit and you’ll have a great partner in the United States and they’ll have something that is more valuable because they have the ultimate partner in the United States.”

The administration of President Donald Trump, has ordered US prosecutors to criminally probe state and local officials who attempt to resist its immigration enforcement efforts.
This is according to a memo to Justice Department staff.
Authored by the acting Deputy Attorney-General, Emil Bove, the memo said Federal law prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing or otherwise failing to comply with lawful immigration-related commands and requests.
The memo, dated on Tuesday and made public on Wednesday, signals an aggressive stance on Trump’s hardline immigration policies by the Justice Department and raises the prospect of criminal charges for those who may interfere.
According to the memo, state and local officials who resist or obstruct immigration enforcement could be charged under federal laws barring harboring immigrants who are in the United States unlawfully.
It also reinstated a policy dating back to Trump’s first administration under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offenses.
“The most serious offenses are those punishable by death … and offenses with the most significant mandatory minimum sentences,” it said.
The memo came a day after the Trump administration abruptly fired four of the department’s senior career immigration officials from the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the office that runs the immigration courts.
DAILY POST reports that those removed included the office’s former director Mary Cheng and Chief Immigration Judge Sheila McNulty, who was previously listed as a target on a so-called bureaucrat watch list operated by the conservative American Accountability Foundation.
Bove told Justice Department employees in Tuesday’s memo that the new directive is a way to enforce the flurry of executive orders Trump signed on illegal immigration on his first day office.

The Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, has told the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that so much is expected from the Commission in conducting free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections that meet international standards.
The National Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle spoke at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s first quarterly consultative meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Dantalle pointed out that credible election is imperative for sustainable democracy and development, insisting that the electoral body must get it right in 2025, especially with off circle elections coming in Anambra.
The Council called on the Commission to commence preparations for the 2027 general elections immediately to enable it put in place all requirements in due time and to meet the expectation of Nigerians.
He said that while preparations for the Anambra State gubernatorial election are on, the Commission should also activate its Election Project Plan (EPP), Strategic Programme of Action (SPA), the 2022 – 2026 Strategic Plan and Strategic Plan Implementation Programme (SPIP) for the 2027 general election.
“To whom much is given much is expected, INEC should know that fellow compatriots count on it for transparent elections that will usher in visionary leaders who will transform the nation,” IPAC said.
“The Commission should justify the confidence reposed in it, put its act together and improve on previous performance.
“There is no doubt that the conduct of successful election is a collective responsibility of stakeholders. It is the reason we must rebuild trust in the electoral process.
“Low voter turnout in previous elections is worrisome and a sad commentary in our democratic process. This narrative must change! We must continue to work together in ensuring electoral integrity, the sanctity of the ballot box and the mandate of the people.”
IPAC urged stakeholders to support INEC in discharging its statutory duties which are essential in consolidating and strengthening constitutional governance.
Similarly, the Council urged the National Assembly to expedite action on the on-going Constitution and Electoral Act amendments, as time is of the essence, and as well ensure diligent and speedy consideration and passage of the 2025 appropriation bill.
“We also urge citizens to be alive to their civic responsibilities and ensure that those they voted into office should give genuine account of their stewardship. Their performance will determine their fate in future elections,” it added.
“Expectations of Nigerians are becoming higher. Governments at all levels should articulate and implement people-focused programmes and projects that will assuage their sufferings and foster economic growth, political stability, social justice, religious harmony, and national security and unity.”

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed to hit the European Union with tariffs, saying his administration was discussing a 10 percent punitive duty on Chinese imports because fentanyl is being sent from China via Mexico and Canada.
Trump stated this while interacting with newsmen at the White House a day after taking office without immediately imposing tariffs as he had promised during his campaign.
Trump said the EU and other countries also had troubling trade surpluses with the United States.
“The European Union is very, very bad to us. So they’re going to be in for tariffs. It’s the only way you’re going to get fairness,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that Trump on Monday said that he was considering imposing the duties on Canada and Mexico unless they clamped down on the trafficking of illegal migrants and fentanyl, including precursor chemicals from China, across their U.S. borders.
The newly inaugurated US president had previously threatened a 10 percent duty on Chinese imports because of the trade, but realigned that with the February 1 deadline.
China said it was willing to maintain communication with the US to properly handle differences and expand mutually beneficial cooperation.
The China, through its foreign ministry said sought to promote stable and sustainable ties with the US.
“We always believe that there is no winner in a trade war or tariff war. China will always firmly safeguard its national interests,” ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters at a regular press briefing on Wednesday.
White House trade adviser, Peter Navarro, said that Trump’s Canada and Mexico tariff threat was to pressure the two countries to stop illegal migrants and illicit drugs from entering the US.

British Defence Secretary, John Healey has warned Russia President Vladimir Putin after the Royal Navy tracked a ‘Russian spy ship’ that passed through UK waters earlier this week.
Healey issued the warning while speaking to the parliament on Wednesday.
He said the British government knows what Putin is doing.
According to Healey, the Yantar vessel was being “used for gathering intelligence and mapping the UK’s critical underwater infrastructure”.
“I also wanted President Putin to hear this message: ‘We see you, we know what you’re doing and we will not shy away from robust action to protect this country’,” Healey told MPs.
The ship entered British waters on Monday about 45 miles off the country’s coast, with the Royal Navy dispatching two vessels to monitor it, Healy said.
“It was detected loitering over UK critical undersea infrastructure,” he said.
The defence minister added that the ship was now in the North Sea, “having passed through British waters”.
Meanwhile, in September last year, Royal Navy tracked Russian vessels in UK waters.
