The federal government has set up the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed–led Expanded Negotiation Committee for Tertiary Institutions to enhance discussions with academic and non-academic unions across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the new committee was established to harmonize all negotiation processes under a unified and coordinated framework that ensures institutional continuity and sector-wide inclusiveness.

The minister noted that, unlike in the past when negotiations were held separately with various unions, the expanded committee will engage all stakeholders collectively to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable agreement.

“The membership has been carefully selected to reflect the full spectrum of the education sector, ensuring that no group is left behind,” he said.

According to him, the committee has been provided with a fully equipped secretariat to aid its work and announced that its inaugural meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7.

Alausa called on all academic and non-academic unions to cooperate fully and respond promptly to the committee’s engagements.

He further said that President Bola Tinubu has given full political backing to the process, directing that all negotiations be concluded swiftly, fairly, and in the spirit of mutual respect.

“President Tinubu’s message is clear — all our children must remain in school. This is the Renewed Hope Agenda in action,” Alausa added.

Also speaking, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, extolled the Ministry of Education for its inclusive approach and dedication to dialogue.

Dingyadi stressed that lasting peace in the education sector can only be achieved when all stakeholders are involved in the process.

He charged members of the expanded committee to serve as impartial mediators guided by justice and fairness, adding that their early and active engagement will ensure the smooth implementation of final agreements.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, returned to Abuja after a ten-day working visit to Lagos.

While in Lagos, the president held a series of high-profile engagements with investors, commissioned projects, and attended national events.

A statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President arrived in Lagos on Friday, September 26, after attending the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, in Ibadan.

He met with investors like Bayo Ogunlesi, Chief Executive Officer of Global Infrastructure Partners, and Keem Belo-Osagie, Chairman of Metis Capital Partners and former Chairman of United Bank for Africa and Etisalat.

Tinubu visited Imo State to inaugurate projects executed by Governor Hope Uzodimma and unveiled a book authored by the governor.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has declared former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Adams Oshiomhole, persona non grata following his recent comments condemning the strike action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Oshiomhole, during an interview on Arise Television last Friday, had described the strike by PENGASSAN against the Dangote Refinery as “ill-considered,” urging labour unions to give new investors like Dangote time to stabilise before mounting industrial pressure.

“In pursuing war, you have to recognise that the tools you deploy must not hurt innocent people, like the tomato sellers who cannot get fuel to move their goods because there is a quarrel between one refinery and one union,” Oshiomhole said. “An employer has to exist, mature, and be strong enough to guarantee good-paying jobs. If you cripple a business before it even finds its feet, you are also destroying the jobs you claim to protect.”

But NUPENG, in a strongly worded statement jointly signed by its President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, expressed shock at Oshiomhole’s remarks, accusing him of betraying the very principles he once championed as a labour leader.

“The leadership of NUPENG hereby declares Senator Adams Oshiomhole persona non grata within the ranks of Nigerian oil and gas workers for his undistinguished denunciation of the PENGASSAN strike against the unjustifiable sack of 800 engineers as punishment for exercising their fundamental right of unionism,” the statement read.

The union said the declaration means Oshiomhole would no longer be recognised or allowed to participate in any of its programmes or events.

“The practical effect of our declaration is that henceforth, we will not participate in or lend legitimacy to any event featuring Senator Oshiomhole,” it added.

NUPENG also urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other civil society organisations to take note of what it described as Oshiomhole’s “betrayal of the working class.”

“Oshiomhole’s denunciation and insensitivity to the plight of 800 engineers is a dangerous toxin designed to weaken the resolve of the working class and strengthen the class enemy,” the union stated. “His undistinguished position on the PENGASSAN strike qualifies him as the Judas Iscariot of Nigerian trade unionism.”

The statement also advised the former NLC president to “retire from commenting on labour matters” as he has “irretrievably lost the moral right and legitimacy before Nigerian workers, particularly those in the oil and gas sector.”

The controversy stems from PENGASSAN’s recent strike action, which was suspended last Wednesday over the alleged unjust dismissal of hundreds of workers by the Dangote Refinery.

Electricity consumers in the South East have urged the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC, to, as a matter of urgency, resolve any pending tariff impasse between it and Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, MPDL.

The group, under the aegis of South East Electricity Consumers Association, SEECA, said that Enugu, being the capital of Igbo land and the defunct East Central State, required peace and stable power supply in a manner that will neither exploit the consumers nor the electricity distribution company in charge of the state.

In a letter submitted to EERC by the group and signed by its Coordinator, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, he stated that the ongoing dispute over the July 18, 2025 tariff order had thrown many communities into darkness and deepened confusion in the electricity supply chain.

He also stated that such a sensitive matter affecting the lives of millions of residents should not be allowed to linger.

According to him, the Association had carefully studied the issues surrounding the tariff order and observed that both parties have entrenched positions which have stalled progress.

Okafor also explained that the disagreement over data usage, technical losses, operational costs, and capital expenditure recognition are all technical matters that require neutral intervention.

He revealed that MPDL had filed a petition against the tariff reduction, arguing that the new Band A tariff of N160/kwh would cause the company a loss of over N1.3 billion in the first month, while the regulator maintained that the figures were derived from the company’s own submissions.

SEECA also posited that, since the dispute began, power supply in Enugu nosedived, leaving several neighbourhoods in darkness for days.

In its recommendations, SEECA urged EERC to suspend the implementation of the disputed tariff order until the matter is fully addressed, while also calling for the appointment of an independent and technically grounded third party to review the contested figures and mediate between both sides.

The group also demanded that provision for meter installation be factored into the tariff framework to ensure smooth and timely distribution of meters to all unmetered customers across the state.

It, however, appealed to the regulator to maintain its impartial role and balance the interests of investors and consumers for sustainable electricity delivery in the region.
