Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has disclosed that the proposed tax reform bills championed by President Bola Tinubu will significantly benefit northern Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels TV, Governor Sule revealed how the reforms, particularly the revised Value-Added Tax (VAT) distribution formula, would ensure greater equity and fiscal balance across the country.

“These reforms are a game-changer for northern Nigeria. Under the new VAT sharing formula, 50% will be allocated for equity, 30% based on derivation, and 20% tied to consumption. This adjustment reflects a fairer system that addresses long-standing disparities.”

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), which initially approached the reforms with caution, recently announced its support for President Tinubu’s proposals after securing assurances from the President’s Tax Reform Committee, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele.

According to Governor Sule, the endorsement came after thorough deliberations and adjustments to the reform framework to accommodate regional and state-specific concerns.

Governor Sule further emphasized that the NGF’s backing of the reforms demonstrates a unified effort by the governors to achieve fiscal equity while maintaining the balance between federal and state interests.

“The discussions surrounding the proposed tax reform bills are intended to uphold President Bola Tinubu’s vision rather than criticize or oppose him,” he added.

The proposed tax reform bills are now awaiting deliberation in the National Assembly, with analysts predicting intense discussions as legislators work to refine the proposals further.

The national security minister said the deal was “irresponsible” and “reckless”.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid has pledged his support for the prime minister, saying that the deal was “more important than any disagreement we’ve ever had.”

DAILY POST reports that fighting has continued in Gaza despite expectations of a ceasefire, with at least 80 Palestinians killed and hundreds more injured by Israeli airstrikes since the ceasefire announcement, according to the civil defence agency.

The Israeli military said that it had conducted strikes on “approximately 50 terror targets” across Gaza since late Wednesday.

A civil defence spokesperson said its teams had recovered the bodies of five children after a strike on the northern city of Jabalia.

Ben-Gvir said, “The deal that is taking shape is a reckless deal,” he said in a televised statement, saying it would “erase the achievements of the war” by releasing hundreds of Palestinian militants and withdrawing from strategic areas in Gaza, leaving Hamas undefeated.

In a similar vein, the country’s minister of diaspora affairs and combating antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, also said he would resign if Israel withdraws from the Philadelphi corridor, as outlined in phase one of the ceasefire deal.

In a statement posted to X, he wrote, “I hereby undertake that if, God forbid, there is a withdrawal from the Philadelphi corridor (before the war goals are achieved), or if we do not return to fighting in order to complete the war goals – I will resign from my position as a government minister.”

Chikli is the first member of the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu-led Likud party, to threaten to quit over details of the agreement.

“What we are doing now is to push for final approval and implementation, without any delay.

The Egyptian capital, Cairo, will be the location for continued talks between America, Qatar and Egypt on implementing the deal.

The minister said the talks were set to begin soon, and that the mediators would have an “operation room” overseeing the deal in the Egyptian capital.

“We are fully committed to fulfil our own commitments and we are expecting that others to fulfil their own commitments.”

It was learned that evacuees are eager to return home to assess the damage and salvage any keepsakes or medicine, but officials said it was too dangerous or too taxing on first responders who were still dealing with the immediate disaster, which has killed at least 27 people.

Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass, lamented the effects of the wildfires on the people.

“You can see the emotional toll that this disaster has taken on people, as I spoke to people who had lost their homes or who were not sure the status of their homes or missing pets. The toll you can see mounting on them,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that on Wednesday, Yoon became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested, over a probe into whether he committed insurrection when he briefly imposed martial law in early December.

He is being held at the Seoul Detention Centre.

Investigators at the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, CIO, that is leading the inquiry need to request a court to approve a detention warrant for up to 20 days to hold Yoon in custody for longer.

A CIO official, while fielding questions from newsmen, said Yoon’s current arrest term was due to expire by Friday evening.

“I think you can consider it almost finished,” the official said responding to a question on whether investigators were set to file a request to detain Yoon further.

The Seoul Central District Court struck down a challenge on Thursday from Yoon’s lawyers over the legality of his arrest.

The impeached president stonewalled efforts by the CIO to interrogate him on Thursday and again on Friday while his party has capitalised on political polarisation to improve its approval ratings since Yoon’s arrest, polling showed.

In a statement, Yoon’s lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, said he has fully stated his basic position on the first day of the arrest, adding that they believe there is no reason or need to answer the question and answer style back-and-forth.

The legal team of the suspended president has denied that Yoon masterminded an insurrection, a crime in South Korea punishable by life imprisonment or even technically by the death penalty.

Seok said on Friday that he expected investigators to seek a detention warrant, but hoped there would be a more careful and comprehensive consideration of the arrest’s illegality when a court reviewed the warrant.

DAILY POST gathered that South Korea is grappling with its worst political crisis in decades, sparked by Yoon’s brief attempt to impose martial law on December 3 that stunned the nation and was swiftly voted down by parliament.

Yoon was impeached on December 14 and faces a Constitutional Court trial that started this week to decide whether to permanently suspend his powers or return him to office.

In response, however, the US said it still expected the deal to go into effect on Sunday as planned.

Israel delayed meetings expected on Thursday when the cabinet was expected to vote on the pact, blaming Hamas for the hold-up.

However, in the early hours of Friday, Netanyahu’s office said approval was imminent.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was informed by the negotiating team that agreements have been reached on a deal to release the hostages,” his office said in a statement.

The statement further said that the security cabinet would meet on Friday before a full meeting of the cabinet later to approve the deal.

According to the U.S White House spokesperson, John Kirby, Washington believed the agreement was on track and a ceasefire in the 15-month-old conflict was expected to proceed as soon as late this weekend.

“We are seeing nothing that would tell us that this is going to get derailed at this point,” he said.

In a statement late Thursday, a group representing families of Israeli hostages in Gaza, 33 of whom are due to be freed in the first six-week phase of the accord, urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to move forward quickly.

“For the 98 hostages, each night is another night of terrible nightmare. Do not delay their return even for one more night,” the group said.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, earlier on Thursday said a loose end in the negotiations needed to be resolved.
