Police in Mumbai have arrested a suspect in the shocking knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his home last week.
The suspect, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was arrested in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumbai.
Authorities allege that Shehzad, believed to be a Bangladeshi national staying in India illegally, intended to rob Khan.
Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police Dixit Gedam revealed that Shehzad had been living in Mumbai for six months, working at a housekeeping agency under a fake identity. On Sunday, a Mumbai court ordered him into five days of police custody.
The attack on Khan, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated stars, has dominated national headlines, raising concerns about security in Mumbai.
DAILY POST had reported that Khan sustained six stab wounds, including one near his neck, and underwent surgery.
His wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and their children were reportedly at home during the incident but were unharmed.
According to Eliyama Philip, a nurse employed at Khan’s home, the intruder entered late at night.
Armed with a wooden object and a blade, he demanded ₹10 million ($115,477) while warning against raising an alarm. A scuffle ensued, during which Philip was injured, and Khan was stabbed before the attacker fled.
Shehzad’s lawyer, Sandeep Shikhane, dismissed the allegations, claiming his client was being made a “scapegoat” and denying his Bangladeshi citizenship.
“There is no documentary evidence to support the claim that he is from Bangladesh,” Shikhane said.
Police reportedly detained and released five other individuals earlier in the week after CCTV footage captured the attacker leaving the scene.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has set ₦8.33 million as the Hajj fare for intending pilgrims from Borno and Adamawa zone for the 2025 pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, in a statement issued by the commission’s Assistant Director of Information and Publication, Fatima Usara, on Monday in Abuja.
Prof. Usman said the fare announcement followed approval by the Office of the Vice President and extensive consultations with stakeholders to maintain affordability.
“The 2025 Hajj fare for Borno and Adamawa Zone’s intending pilgrims is ₦8.33 million,” the chairman confirmed.
He added that intending pilgrims from the Northern Zone would pay ₦8.46 million, while those from the Southern States would pay ₦8.78 million.
“This modest effort on the fare was reached after extensive consultations to ensure inclusivity in this important decision-making process,” Prof. Usman stated.
He also appreciated the support of the presidency, particularly Ameen Amshi, the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties, and the Forum of Executive Secretaries of State Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies, and Commissions.
The NAHCON chairman urged intending pilgrims to adhere to the timelines and Saudi guidelines while emphasizing the importance of early payment and timely registration to avoid last-minute challenges.

The announcement was made by the Acting Rector, Dr. Hauwa Muhammad, during the institution’s 41st matriculation ceremony held over the weekend.
Approximately 15,000 students, newly admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session, participated in the event, which took place in Nasarawa Local Government Area.
The matriculated students were enrolled in National Diploma, ND, Higher National Diploma, HND and Part-Time programmes.
Dr. Muhammad used the opportunity to caution the new students against engaging in examination malpractices, highlighting the consequences faced by their predecessors.

A court in Seoul has extended the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, citing concerns that he may destroy evidence linked to his failed attempt to impose martial law last month.
The court issued a warrant on Sunday allowing investigators to hold Yoon for an additional 20 days, including the four days he has already spent in custody since his arrest on Wednesday.
Recall that the 64-year-old leader is under investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) on charges of insurrection over the December 3 martial law order that plunged the nation into political chaos.
Yoon’s arrest followed weeks of tension between investigators and his presidential security team, who resisted an earlier attempt to detain him on January 3.
Pro-Yoon supporters have repeatedly rallied in his defense, with some violently disrupting legal proceedings.
On Sunday, after the court extended his detention, demonstrators broke into the courthouse, reportedly smashing windows and doors.
Police arrested dozens of protesters, an incident condemned by acting President Choi Sang-mok.
“Such violence is unimaginable in a democratic society,” Choi said, pledging to increase security for future court proceedings.
Yoon’s lawyer, Yun Gap-geun, told local media that the president would not cooperate with the CIO investigation.
Meanwhile, Yoon himself reportedly expressed “shock” at the courthouse violence and urged his supporters to remain peaceful.
The martial law declaration, which Yoon justified as a response to alleged “anti-state forces” in parliament and external threats from North Korea, has divided public opinion.
Critics argue it was an extreme reaction to political opposition and a ploy to consolidate power amid a scandal involving the First Lady and Yoon’s declining popularity.
Yoon’s impeachment, approved by parliament, is pending confirmation by South Korea’s Constitutional Court.
If upheld, he will be permanently removed from office. The fallout has left the country in turmoil, with protests from both supporters and opponents of Yoon continuing to rock the streets.
The political crisis intensified after parliament also impeached acting President Han Duck-soo for allegedly obstructing Yoon’s impeachment process, paving the way for Choi Sang-mok to assume temporary leadership.
With the extension of Yoon’s detention, investigators now have until February to decide whether to proceed with charges.

ICPC secures conviction of university accountant for ₦60m fraud in Sokoto
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Lukumanu Sani Waziri, an accountant at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, for corruption and abuse of office.
Waziri was found guilty of diverting public funds totaling over ₦60 million through unauthorized access to the Government Integrated Financial Information System (GIFMIS).
According to a statement by the ICPC, Waziri was arraigned alongside two others in 2021 before Justice M. Abdulgafar of the Federal High Court, Sokoto Division, on a nine-count charge of fraud and corruption.
During the trial, ICPC Prosecutor, Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, presented evidence showing how Waziri, as a designated user of GIFMIS, altered financial records and facilitated the transfer of millions of naira into private accounts, including his own and that of his accomplice, Monday Michael Adejo.
The commission further revealed that Waziri had unauthorizedly changed the bank account details for state taxes meant for Kogi, Edo, Bauchi, and Zamfara States. The diverted funds were fraudulently transferred to the First Bank account of Monday Adejo.
One of the charges read: “That you, LUKUMANU SANI WAZIRI (M), and Monday Michael Adejo (M), sometime in April 2020, conspired amongst yourselves to take possession of the sums of ₦6,127,465.75, ₦8,552,824.60, and ₦5,939,666.49 totaling ₦20,619,956.8 from the Government Integrated Financial Information System into the First Bank Account of Monday Michael Adejo, which reasonably ought to have known that such funds form part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, namely: corruption and fraud.”
In his judgment delivered on Friday, Justice Abdulgafar found Waziri guilty on seven out of the nine charges against him.
The court sentenced Waziri to the following terms: “One year imprisonment or a fine of ₦200,000 each on Counts 1 and 2; one year imprisonment each on Counts 3, 4, and 5 without the option of a fine; and three years imprisonment or a fine of ₦500,000 each on Counts 8 and 9.”
The sentences are to run concurrently.

Ahmad described those advocating for Kanu’s release as enemies of Nigeria.
Posting on X, Ahmad wrote: “Anybody advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, a terrorist and the leader of the proscribed terrorist organization IPOB, should be considered a sworn enemy of this country.”
He was picked up by the Nigerian government over his agitation for Biafra and, by extension, Nigeria’s breakup.
Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), despite court orders discharging and acquitting him.
The IPOB leader was rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria to continue his trial.
Kanu’s trial is currently stalled after he challenged Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court to recuse herself from his trial.
In line with his demand, the judge withdrew from the trial and forwarded Kanu’s case file to the Chief Justice of the Abuja Federal High Court for reassignment.
However, Kanu has filed a complaint before the National Judicial Council (NJC), accusing Justice Nyako of misconduct.

The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has rejected the proposed derivation formula in the ongoing tax reform discussions, warning that it could deepen regional inequalities if not explicitly defined.
In a statement released on Sunday, LND spokesperson, Dr. Ladan Salihu, commended the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for endorsing a revised Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing formula of 50% based on equality, 30% on derivation, and 20% on population.
However, the group raised concerns over the absence of a clear definition for “derivation” in the proposed framework.
“LND welcomes the NGF’s recognition of the need for comprehensive tax reforms to modernize Nigeria’s fiscal system, enhance stability, and align with global best practices. However, there is one critical issue overlooked in the Governors Forum’s communiqué: the definition of ‘derivation,’” Salihu said.
The group stressed that derivation must be defined as “the place of consumption,” arguing that this approach ensures fair resource distribution based on economic activity and contributions.
Without such clarity, the LND warned, the proposed 30% derivation allocation risks exacerbating disparities, disproportionately benefiting certain regions at the expense of others, particularly the North.
“Without this definition, the principles of equity that the reform seeks to achieve will be undermined. Tying derivation to the area of consumption not only reflects modern taxation realities but also promotes accountability and incentivizes economic development across regions,” Salihu added.
The tax reform proposals have sparked intense debates nationwide, with significant opposition from Northern governors and leaders. Many argue that the reforms are skewed to favor Lagos State and a few other regions, thereby shortchanging the North.
In its statement, the LND urged the NGF and the Presidential Tax Reform Committee to incorporate its recommendations, including amendments to the inheritance tax clause, into the framework.
The group vowed to withhold full support for the reforms until these critical issues are resolved.
