NiMet predicts sunshine, haziness for 3 days starting Thursday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has predicted sunshine and haziness across the country from Thursday to Saturday.
NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Wednesday in Abuja, forecast that the northern regions would experience sunny skies in a hazy atmosphere throughout the forecast period.
It also predicted moderate dust haze in the North Central regions, with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km during the forecast period.
The agency envisaged that southern regions would likely experience a hazy atmosphere with patches of clouds, with early morning fog and mist expected along the coast.
According to NiMet, on Friday, sunny skies with hazy conditions are expected in the northern regions.
It said that a slight dust haze with good visibility is anticipated over the North Central regions, while the southern parts will continue to experience hazy conditions with early morning fog or mist along the coast.
For Saturday, the agency forecast sunny skies in a hazy atmosphere over the northern and North Central regions.
NiMet added that the southern regions will see hazy conditions with patches of clouds, along with the possibility of early morning thunderstorms over parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta States.
Then, later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Bayelsa states,”it said.
While urging the public to take precautions due to the suspension of dust particles in the air, NiMet also advised people with respiratory issues, including asthma to be cautious.
It also warned of strong winds potentially preceding thunderstorms in certain areas and advised the public to follow safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
The agency encouraged airline operators to obtain specific weather reports from NiMet for their operations.
It equally urged residents to stay informed through its weather updates by visiting their website.

DAILY POST reports that the telecoms companies have been asking for an increase in tariff for some years now.
They are citing rising operational costs, inflation, naira devaluation, among others.
Appearing on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, the Wednesday’s edition, the Minister said the government acknowledged that a tariff increase in the telecom sector is due.
Asked if there is a percentage threshold for the impending tariff increase, the Minister said, “I think it should not be more than anywhere between 30 to 60 per cent.”
The Minister further revealed that the companies are insisting on a 100 per cent increase which would enable them to stabilise the sector, but added that the government knows that such a level of increase will be harmful to the people.
“We have already made it clear that we are not going to approve 100 per cent. These companies are asking for 100 per cent, stating clearly that this is what they believe they need to get.
“But what we are looking at in terms of the sector is that if this is the sector that is responsible for driving growth in our country, it will be harmful to our people to allow MNO to increase by 100 per cent,” Tijani said.
The Minister noted that the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, is still working on the tariff increase and is yet to arrive at a particular figure.
According to him, it is necessary to look at the numbers, the implication any increase will have on the people and the sustainability of the sector for proper balancing.
Tijani said that for mobile network operators to improve their service to the required standard, there is a need for them to keep improving their equipment.

The Nigerian Government has responded to recent remarks by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, at a public event in Lagos, regarding the economic reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The 16th Emir of Kano, had while speaking as chairman of the 21st Anniversary of Fawehinmiism (Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture 2025) in Lagos State on Wednesday, said that the administration of President Tinubu is getting some things wrong, stating that he would not want to help them to correct the policies affecting the citizens.
Sanusi said that while there were a few points he could offer to explain the trajectory the administration had taken and how such decisions were predictable, he chose not to do so because they don’t behave like friends, adding that the solutions he would proffer would help the government, but he did not intend to assist them due to the way they had treated him.
However, in a statement signed by Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the Federal government acknowledged that Sanusi, and indeed any Nigerian, has the inalienable right to express an opinion either in the form of commendation or criticism on how the government is being run.
It, however, said it was amusing that a leader, more so one from an institution that ennobles forthrightness, fairness, and justice would publicly admit to shuffling off saying the truth because of personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism.
“It is pertinent to state that Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges,” the statement said.
“This administration has implemented transformative reforms not because they are easy, but because they are essential for securing Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, as Emir Sanusi had consistently advocated.
“The temporary pains currently experienced from these inevitable decisions, as Sanusi himself acknowledged, are a ‘necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management’ more than anything else.
“These reforms are already delivering measurable progress. The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, which has contributed to increased foreign reserves and strengthened Nigeria’s ability to shield itself from external economic shocks.
“The removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up significant resources, allowing for greater investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
“Projections from respected institutions, including the World Bank, show an upward trajectory in Nigeria’s GDP, signaling that our economy is firmly on the path to recovery.
“Additionally, by addressing inefficiencies, the country has reduced its debt service-to-revenue ratio, creating a more sustainable fiscal framework for future generations.
“It is deeply disappointing that reforms widely recognized as essential by global experts—including by Emir Sanusi II himself—are now being subtly condemned by him because of a shift in loyalty.
“His Highness, given his background in economics, has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress because he feels estranged from his ‘friends’ in government.
“We urge the Emir to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones and prioritize the greater good of Nigerians.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. As a government, we urge esteemed leaders to refrain from rhetorics that undermine public trust. Instead, they owe it a duty to champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria. This is a critical time for our country, what is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s mission is to lead Nigeria towards economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
“The challenges we face demand courage and collective effort, not divisive narratives. This administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders while remaining steadfast in putting the interests of Nigerians above all else.
“Let history record this moment as a turning point—when leaders and citizens alike, choose to prioritize the nation’s destiny over personal gain. Together, we will deliver on the promise of renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all,” he stated.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Uzodinma urges citizens to assist children of fallen officers
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has appealed to the civil populace, especially private school owners, to show gratitude to the children of the fallen officers by awarding scholarships to them as a way to cushion the effects of the loss of their bread-winners.
Uzodinma made the request as he attend the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square, New Owerri, Imo State.
He maintained that beyond the annual observance, there was a need to focus on the significance of the fallen heroes who scarified and laid down their lives for others and for the peace and continued existence of the nation.
The Governor noted that the sacrifice made by the fallen officers is the highest form of patriotism for which the nation cannot easily forget and must ever remain grateful.
“Patriotism is the love of one’s country. These Nigerians we are remembering today love Nigeria unto death.
“We have various contributions to make to demonstrate our love for Nigeria,” he observed.
The number one citizen of the State further said that Nigeria as a nation needs to do all within its power to support the families of the departed gallant soldiers, adding that the support could be physical, through monetary assistance, emotional or through kind words of consolations and encouragement.
He pointed out that extending helping hands to the families of the deceased officers will reassure them that their husbands and fathers did not die in vain.
On the side of his administration, Uzodimma assured of continuing assistance to both the families of the departed and serving personnel, saying that the people of the State owed the security agencies immense gratitude for helping the State battle insecurity.
He regretted that some of them have died in the course of maintaining peace in the State, and assured that his Government will continue to honour the memories of such heroes.
Again, he appealed to the citizens not to hesitate in volunteering helpful information to the security agencies in the fight against insecurity,
Uzodinma further used the occasion to extend the State’s support and appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, assistance, encouragement and funding of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the fight against insecurity in the sountry.
During the event, Governor Uzodimma laid a wreath as the Special Guest of honour and performed the symbolic release of pigeons to signify peace in the land.

The National Assembly has increased revenue target to be generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, for 2025 to N21.6 trillion, while the Chairman of the Service, Zacch Adedeji was commended for surpassing the benchmark of N19.4 trillion for last year.
The performance of the FIRS was revealed on Wednesday at a session with the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Finance chaired by Senator Sani Musa.
At the backdrop of the impressive performance, the Committee further set a revenue target and urged the FIRS to work harder to generate more funds for the nation, stressing that the nation has what it takes for self-sustainability.
The Deputy Chairman, Reps Committee on Finance, Hon. Saidu Musa Abdullahi who commented on the 2024 budget performance of FIRS described the revenue generation as historic and unprecedented.
He said: “The feat attained by FIRS on revenue collection or generation in 2024 was historic and unprecedented and a very wonderful one, worthy of commendation.
“That you surpassed the target set for the agency in the 2024 Appropriation Act, from N19.4 trillion to N21.6trillion, is very encouraging”, he said.
He, however, urged the FIRS boss to understudy the template being used in South Africa, which according to him, generates revenue from tax collections far above that of Nigeria despite having a smaller population of about 45 to 54 million people when compared to the 200 million population in Nigeria.
“We shall give you total support on your tax reform but you need to bring in more taxable citizens into the net from the informal sector”, he said.
Also commending FIRS for surpassing projected tax revenue in 2024, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (Delta South) said taxes all over the world is the way to go, the very reason FIRS must deepen the process through planned reform.
He suggested that the committee should increase projected revenue for FIRS in 2025 to N30 trillion.
Senator Binos Yeroe (Adamawa South), also commended the FIRS boss for the initiatives and innovations deployed in surpassing tax collection revenue target in 2024.
“Your performance in 2024 was highly commendable and I hope you keep it up”, he said.
Hon Etanabene Benedict added to the commendation galore for the FIRS boss in his remarks by saying “If we do well on tax collections or revenue generation, we will not borrow to fund our budget.
“Going by the feat attained by FIRS in 2024, I urge this committee to project N60 trillion tax collection or revenue generation for it in 2025”.
However, the Chairmen of the committee in their separate closing remarks, told the FIRS boss that the N25 trillion projected for the agency in 2025 is what he should work with and possibly surpass it as done in 2024.
Senator Sani Musa said: “FIRS should work with the N25 trillion projected revenue set for it in 2025. It is achievable and even surpassable.”
