Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has charged the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, to tackle the pressing challenges of cultism and kidnapping.
Fubara gave the charge during a courtesy visit by the Commissioner of Police and senior officers of the State Police Command at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The governor also advised Adepoju against attending nocturnal meetings that could heighten political tensions in the state.
Fubara encouraged the new CP to leverage his extensive knowledge of the terrain to effectively tackle crime.
This charge is coming on the heels of an incident in Eleme Local Government Area, where a Dutch expatriate working with the state government, along with his driver and security aides, drowned after their vehicle plunged into a river while reportedly fleeing a kidnapping attempt.
Responding, Adepoju, who officially assumed office as the 47th Commissioner of Police on January 4, promised to improve intelligence gathering and response mechanisms to combat crime.
He assured the governor of his commitment to a non-partisan approach in discharging his duties.

FCT: NSCDC arrests 36 scavengers with illicit drugs, weapons
The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has arrested 36 scavengers over alleged possession of illicit drugs and weapons in Abuja. The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has arrested 36 scavengers over alleged possession of illicit drugs and weapons in Abuja.
The FCT NSCDC Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, made this known on Friday in Abuja, saying the suspects were caught in various areas of the FCT.
DAILY POST recalls that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had banned activities of scavengers in the FCT and suspended for two weeks operations of pan-takers across the city.
Odumosu said that items allegedly recovered from the suspects included four daggers, three Jack knives, two chisels and three knives.
Others are narcotic drugs, ten bottles of codeine syrup, 45 wraps of cannabis sativa, thrash bags and pieces of iron rods.
“The suspects are currently being investigated and profiled and I will ensure that due diligence is followed in their prosecution,” Odumosu assured.
The corps commandant advised FCT residents to dispose of refuse through the appropriate waste management companies and stop patronising scavengers, popularly called “Baba Nbola” for the sake of safety.
He said that their detention was necessitated to nip vandalism and theft of public infrastructure such as manhole covers, streetlights, solar panels, armoured cables and other assets in the bud.
According to him, the suspects roam the streets of the FCT, perpetrating all forms of criminal activities under the guise of scavenging.
“Most of these scavengers are dangerous elements that must be flushed out of the FCT, if we want crime to abate.
“The public should note that, although they appear innocent, harmless and vulnerable, most of them are extremely dangerous, their activities are criminal in nature and they constitute threats to the nation.
“They go about the nooks and crannies of the city scavenging for plastics, scrap metals and irons, but from previous arrests, interrogations and investigations we realised that their real business is to vandalise infrastructure.
“This has resulted in the untimely death and maiming of many innocent Nigerians,” he said.
The commandant further said that investigations also revealed that these scavengers serve as informants to criminals.
Odumosu urged residents to join hands with the corps and other security agencies to flush out these dangerous elements in the FCT.

South Sudan’s police on Friday imposed a nationwide curfew from 6:00 pm (1600 GMT) following a night of deadly rioting in the capital over the alleged killing by the army and allied groups in neighbouring Sudan.
Police chief, Abraham Peter Manyuat, in a broadcast on state television, said the curfew would continue until further notice from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily with the aim to restore security and prevent the destruction of property, adding that the police will not tolerate any violations.
In a statement, the police said at least three people had been killed and seven wounded on Thursday night in South Sudan’s capital Juba, some by bullets and machetes, when youths in several suburbs looted and vandalised shops of Sudanese people.
The police further said that In Aweil, near the border with Sudan, three houses belonging to Sudanese people were burned.
It was gathered that on Friday, shops in many Juba suburbs were closed as police and other security forces tried to relocate Sudanese people to safer areas due to fears they could be attacked by rioters.
The riots were said to have followed the alleged killing of South Sudanese people by members of Sudan’s military and allied groups in the city of Wad Madani in Sudan’s El Gezira region.
The Sudanese army on Tuesday condemned what it described as individual violations in El Gezira after human rights groups blamed it and its allies for ethnically-targeted attacks against civilians accused of supporting the rebel Rapid Support Forces, RSF.
Meanwhile, South Sudan’s foreign ministry has summoned Sudan’s ambassador over the alleged killings earlier this week, and President Salva Kiir Mayardit called for calm.
“It is crucial that we do not allow anger to cloud our judgment or turn against Sudanese traders and refugees currently residing in our country,” Mayardit office said in a statement.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has directed personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces to prioritize the protection of innocent citizens, emphasizing that no harm should come to them under any circumstances.
General Musa issued the directive during an official visit to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna State on Friday, where he also inaugurated several completed projects aimed at improving cadet welfare and training facilities.
“We must understand that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is for Nigeria and for Nigerians. Our duty is to protect Nigeria, to protect our sovereignty whether within or outside, it is not to harm innocent people, that we must understand,” he stated.
Addressing cadets specifically, he added, “As you grow in the system, understand this clearly: our duty is to protect and defend our country.”
The CDS also urged officers and cadets to adapt to the evolving nature of warfare, particularly with the integration of artificial intelligence in combating insecurity. He warned that the era of officers neglecting their duties for personal gain is over and will no longer be tolerated.
He reminded the personnel of the significant responsibilities ahead, stressing the importance of preparing to defend the nation against all threats. General Musa further cautioned that there would be no preferential treatment for any officer, as junior commanders would be posted to challenging terrains to safeguard the country and its citizens.
The NDA Commandant, Major General John Ochai, also underscored the importance of leveraging information technology to address contemporary security challenges such as terrorism and banditry.
Highlighting the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in modern warfare, he detailed the academy’s efforts to incorporate ICT into its training programs to better equip cadets for emerging threats.
During the visit, the CDS, accompanied by Major General Ochai, other senior military officers, and their spouses, inaugurated several projects.
These include the NDA Emergency and Trauma Centre, an operational and basic military training complex, among others.

The Italian Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanche, will stand trial for alleged falsification of financial statements at her former publishing company.
Santanche, who is a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, denied committing fraud during her time as chair and CEO of Visibilia, a media publisher and advertising agency.
DAILY POST gathered that she is the second Meloni minister to stand trial after Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who was cleared in December over charges relating to his detention of a migrant boat as part of a different government.
“Prosecutors claim the forecasts in the (company’s) business plan were overly optimistic.
“It leaves us with a bitter taste in our mouths but we are convinced that we can prove Santanche’s lack of involvement,” Santanche’s lawyer, Nicolo Pelanda said.
Meanwhile, opposition parties on Friday asked Santanche to resign.
If she does, she would be the second Meloni minister to step down, after a sex scandal last year toppled the culture minister.
Meloni refused last month to confirm whether Santanche would remain in her post if ordered to stand trial.
Santanche is also caught up in two other investigations, including one for alleged benefit fraud.
Milan prosecutors alleged that Visibilia, which Santanche sold before joining Meloni’s administration in 2022, pocketed government redundancy funds during the coronavirus pandemic for staff members who instead continued to work.
Italy’s highest court will decide at the end of the month whether that case should be transferred from Milan to Rome, after which there will be a decision as to whether or not she should stand trial.
Meanwhile, prosecutors are also probing Santanche over the bankruptcy of organics food company Ki Group-Bioera, which she used to co-manage.
