Israel to release 1,890 Palestinians in first phase of Gaza truce
Mediator, Egypt, on Saturday said that Israel is to release more than 1,890 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase of a Gaza truce. Mediator, Egypt, on Saturday said that Israel is to release more than 1,890 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase of a Gaza truce.
According to the foreign ministry, the prisoners would be released during the first 42-day phase of the ceasefire which is set to begin at 0630 GMT on Sunday.
DAILY POST gathered that Qatar, which mediated the deal along with Egypt and the United States, had announced that militants in Gaza would release 33 hostages during the first phase.
Israel’s justice ministry had earlier said 737 Palestinian prisoners and detainees would be freed — none before 4:00 pm (1400 GMT) on Sunday.
Out of the 251 people taken hostage during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that triggered the war, 94 are still in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.
Sunday’s ceasefire will be only the second truce in 15 months of war in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed more than 50,000 lives and devastated the Palestinian territory.
The truce is to take effect on the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration for a second term as US president.
Egypt’s foreign ministry, in a statement thanked fellow mediator Qatar and appreciated the pivotal role played by the new US administration led by President Trump to end the crisis, as well as the outgoing President, Joe Biden.

An unidentified gunman on Saturday shot and killed two judges at the Iranian Supreme Court.
The judiciary’s Mizan online website reported that a gunman infiltrated the Supreme Court in a planned act of assassination of two brave and experienced judges, saying the two judges were martyred in the act.
Mizan said the assailant killed himself after the terrorist act.
State news agency, IRNA, said that one other person was wounded.
The two slain judges are identified as Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghisseh, both of whom handled cases ffighting crimes against national security, espionage and terrorism.
Judiciary spokesman, Asghar Jahangir, said that a person armed with a handgun entered the room of the two judges and shot them.
“Individuals have been identified, summoned or arrested in connection with the incident,” he added.
The motive behind their killing was not immediately clear, but Mizan said the assailant was not involved in any cases before the Supreme Court, stressing that an investigation into the attack was underway.
Meanwhile, President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his condolences over the deaths, calling on the authorities to act swiftly.
“I strongly urge the security and law enforcement forces to take the necessary measures as soon as possible by examining the dimensions and angles of this reprehensible act and to identify its perpetrators,” he said.
