United States President Donald Trump has said he may give parts of Gaza to other countries in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said the war-ravaged enclave, Gaza, should be thought of as a “big real estate site”.

According to the US president, other countries in the Middle East could be tasked with handling its redevelopment.

“As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it [Gaza] to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it; other people may do it, through our auspices,” Trump said while en route to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl.

“If we could give them a home in a safer area – the only reason they are talking about returning to Gaza is they don’t have an alternative. When they have an alternative, they don’t want to return to Gaza,” he added.

Just last week, Trump announced after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States would “take over” the Gaza Strip and transform it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

According to Trump’s plan, the Palestinian inhabitants of the area would be removed from Gaza and accommodated in other Arab states.

But his statement was met with world-wide criticism and outrage from Arab states.

Other United States officials later sought to qualify Trump’s plans, even as the US president doubled-down on his statement in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Nigerian popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has slammed a $5m lawsuit against Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company of Facebook, over an alleged invasion of his privacy.

This is according to a court document filed at the Lagos State High Court in February, cited by DAILY POST.

In the suit, Falana claimed that Meta wrongfully used his name, image, and voice in a false advertisement for a health product on its platform, portraying him as suffering from prostatitis—a condition he insists he has never had.

Falana argued that the unauthorised use of his identity constitutes a violation of his fundamental right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 24(1)(A) and (E) & Section 34(1)(D) of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

He further alleged that Meta published false and misleading content under the page “AfriCare Health Centre” on Facebook, falsely claiming he had battled prostatitis for over 16 years and struggled with symptoms like pain, fatigue, and urinary issues.

He stated in court documents that he had never had any dealings with the respondent or its pages on issues concerning his health and that the video is false, misleading, and unfair to him.

Consequently, Falana is seeking a declaration that Meta’s actions violated his privacy rights, an order for Meta to remove the false video immediately, and $5 million in general damages for the distress and reputational harm caused.

He argued that Meta’s failure to verify the claims before publishing had exposed him to ridicule and emotional distress.

Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, Meta is yet to comment on the matter.

Recall that in July last year, Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission slammed a $220 million fine on Meta over personal data breaches.

Following the fine, Meta had threatened to exit Nigeria.

U.S. President, Donald Trump’s recent proposal to assume control of the Gaza Strip and forcibly relocate its population to other Arab countries has sparked widespread criticism from human rights advocates, political analysts, and global leaders.

Many have described the plan as a violation of international law and humanitarian principles, with fears that it could further destabilize the Middle East.

Recall that Trump had said Palestinians have “no alternative” but to leave Gaza due to the devastation caused by Israel’s war on Hamas.

Trump claimed Palestinians would “love to leave Gaza” if they have an alternative to do so.

“I don’t think people should be going back to Gaza. Gaza is not a place for people to be living, and the only reason they want to go back, and I believe this strongly, is because they have no alternative… If they had an alternative, they’d much rather not go back to Gaza and live in a beautiful alternative that’s safe,” he told reporters.

But Barrister Haruna Magashi, a staunch advocate for Palestinian independence and member of the “Kano Stands with Palestine” group in an interview with DAILY POST, strongly criticized the proposal, calling it an unprecedented affront to global human rights.

“There has never been talks of ethnic cleansing on the global stage; no convention allows such inhumane treatment in a free society. The world needs to rally and put an end to Trump’s crusade,” he said.

Magashi further accused the U.S. of targeting Palestine for its potential resources, speculating that untapped wealth might be the driving force behind the interest in Gaza.

“This is not just about geopolitics; it’s about economic dominance and resource exploitation. Palestine must not be the next victim of resource plundering,” he warned.

The announcement of this proposal reportedly caught even senior members of Trump’s administration off guard.

According to a New York Times report citing four anonymous sources familiar with the discussions, the plan lacked proper planning or groundwork. Trump’s insistence on depopulating Gaza initially seemed like one of his hyperbolic remarks.

However, he has since repeated the idea multiple times, including during prepared remarks alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

Rights groups have condemned the proposed relocation of Gaza’s population, warning that it would amount to ethnic cleansing. Global leaders have also expressed grave concerns about the implications of the plan.

A European Union spokesperson warned that forcibly uprooting Palestinians could exacerbate unrest and violence in an already volatile region.

The timing of the proposal has added to the controversy, coming just days after a long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19.

The Trump administration had taken credit for negotiating the truce, led by envoy Steve Witkoff, but analysts fear the Gaza plan could jeopardize the fragile peace.

Amnesty International, in its reaction to Trump’s proposal said Amnesty said the US President proposal to transfer Palestinians from Gaza is “outrageous” and “a flagrant violation of international law”.

“But we’re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn’t move back,” the US president said.

Recall that the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, and other European countries had recently rejected Trump’s proposal to relocate and take over the Palestinian-controlled Gaza Strip.

DAILY POST reports that fighting in Gaza started early October in 2023, when the Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out a terror attack on Israel.

About 1,200 people were killed in the attack and another 251 people were taken hostage.

As a result , Israel launch an air and land attacks on Gaza, killing over 47,000 people.

The first son of late former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Jidechukwu Iwuanyanwu, has called on the federal government to honour his father’s last wish by releasing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to journalists in Owerri, Jidechukwu urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter by applying political solution to it.

He stated that his father’s last outing (Emmanuel lwuanyanwu) was to the DSS facility to see Nnamdi Kanu.

According to him, his father was made to walk for over 20 minutes as they didn’t let him drive in to see Kanu.

The statement read “Undeterred, my father sojourned on to see Kanu, and had a father, son moment with Kanu.

“On returning home, my father complained of his heart and retired to his room to rest.

“The next morning he broke down, and was rushed to the hospital.

“He was at the hospital till his death. While at the hospital, he was still fighting for Kanu’s release and the realization of South East Development Commission for the betterment of Ala Igbo.

“I’m sure if he were alive he would have been happy to see one of his wishes come true.

“My father was a man of peace and a man who loved his people Ndigbo and Nigeria at large.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s release will bring further peace and also end the Monday’s sit-at-home in the South East zone.

“As Mazi Nnamdi appears in court today, therefore, I use this opportunity to urge the Federal Government to not let my father’s death be in vain, for his wish to be granted in releasing Mazi Kanu, which will also bring peace to our nation, Ndi Igbo.”
