An Enugu State High Court, on Wednesday, delivered judgment in the long-standing dispute regarding the Igweship of Mburubu, a community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
DAILY POST recalls that there has been controversy surrounding the replacement of the deceased monarch of the community.
However, in its verdict, the court presided over by Justice C.O. Ajah ruled in favour of the Mburubu Town Union.
It held that Chief Jerry Onuokaibe was not elected Igwe of Mburubu legitimately, rather through the Mburubu General Assembly.
Justice Ajah held that the Mburubu General Assembly, which organized a selection and election process for the Igwe of Mburubu, had no legal right to do so.
Describing the group as a “faceless organization and interloper,” the court found that its actions were not only invalid but also unlawful.
Moreover, the judge emphasized that the Mburubu General Assembly was not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), further rendering its actions null and void.
Justice Ajah’s ruling also addressed the 1976 purported constitution of Mburubu, a document that Onuokaibe reportedly presented as the foundation for his claim to the throne.
The court ruled that the 1976 constitution, which had been circulated as a code of conduct for traditional rulers in the old Eastern region, was never meant to serve as the constitution of Mburubu.
The judge clarified that the document was a mere guideline for traditional rulers within the Eastern region, but it was not a legally binding statute or gazette law.
The court emphasized that the only legitimate governing document for Mburubu is the 2003 Constitution of the Mburubu Town Union, which has been officially recognized by both the Enugu State government and the law.
The judge stated that the Igweship stool of Mburubu is only open to individuals from Uhuegbe village, which holds the second position in the order of seniority within the community.
Justice Ajah ruled that Onuokaibe, who hails from Umunafor village, the fifth in the order of seniority, is constitutionally barred from contesting the Igweship.
It ordered a fine of N500,000 on both Onuokaibe and the Mburubu General Assembly in favour of Mburubu Town Union and Chief Linus Igbudu.
It equally ordered the Mburubu Town Union to organize the Igweship election within 21 days.

A signed statement by Hajiya Zainab Ringim, the Senior Special Assistant for Media Affairs, explained that the Gwaram Basirka Bridge is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth in the region.
Zainab Ringim stated, “With a total cost of 6.4 billion naira, the project is being handled by the local contractor Ojeil Construction Company Limited, while Wuri Associate serves as the consultant.”
The Senior Special Assistant for Media Affairs disclosed that during the inspection, Governor Umar Namadi was briefed on the project’s progress, which currently stands at 24% completion.
The statement stressed, “Despite the challenges posed by the six-month contract duration, the governor expressed optimism that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.”
The statement maintained, “The governor’s satisfaction with the project’s progress is a testament to the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development. The Gwaram Basirka Bridge is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, enhancing trade and commerce in the region.”
Hajiya Ringim said, “Governor Namadi’s inspection of the bridge also underscores his administration’s focus on transparency and accountability. By personally overseeing the project’s progress, the governor demonstrates his commitment to ensuring that public funds are utilized efficiently and effectively.”
She added, “The Gwaram Basirka Bridge project is part of the state government’s broader efforts to upgrade the region’s infrastructure. Similar projects are underway across the state, aimed at improving roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.”

He urged road users to be patient while using the one carriageway, while his team remains committed to completing the other carriageway as quickly as possible.
Olatunji also urged the general public to support the government’s efforts to build standard roads across the nation by not allowing any form of protest to delay the ongoing work in the state.
He stated that the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway was among the fastest-delivering projects across the nation.
Recall that the women of the Ntsuruakpa Izhia community in the Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State protested against the alleged abandonment of the road project, which they claim has been causing deadly accidents along the Abakaliki-Enugu highway.
The women, who blocked the Abakaliki-Enugu dualized roads near the Senator Sam Egwu Flyover Ezzamgbo junction in Ohaukwu council area in the early hours of yesterday, expressed sadness over the slow pace of the road project, which has been undergoing rehabilitation since last year.
While interacting with newsmen, the leader of the women, Mrs. Blessing Okweshi, lamented that the alleged abandonment of the project has been causing accidents, resulting in the deaths of those traveling on the route, especially residents.
Reacting, the former Coordinator of the Ohaukwu Development Centre, Chief Okweshi Obiora, and Chief Obasi James, a stakeholder in the community, observed that the level of loss of life already recorded on the road since last year was high. They urged the contractor to hasten the completion of the job to avoid further protests in the community.
The Executive Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Prince Ikechukwu Odono, who visited the scene of the protest, urged the women to embrace peace and return to their homes, assuring them that the contractor would expedite the work without any further delay.
Also, the State Commissioner for Capital Territory and Urban Development, Chief Sunday Inyima, advised the protesters to embrace peace, assuring them that the relevant authorities would address their demands without delay.

Ngwu said that anyone whose relative or friend’s corpse had stayed in the hospital for a period of six months or more should come forward to claim it.
According to him, failure to claim the corpses within three weeks after the announcement means that all unclaimed bodies will be disposed of permanently, and the hospital will not be held accountable.
“This announcement serves as a notice to anyone whose relative or friend’s corpse has stayed in the hospital for a period of six months or more, to proceed and claim it,” he said.

The hospital said some of the corpses had stayed for one year, while others had been in its mortuary for over two years.

The nurses, identified in media reports as Ahmad Rashad Nadir and Sarah Abu Lebdeh, made the remarks during a TikTok video chat with Israeli influencer Max Veifer.
The footage, which has since gone viral, showed them wearing medical scrubs and discussing their attitudes toward Israeli patients.
In the video, Nadir was heard saying, “I’m so upset that you’re Israeli… eventually, you’re going to get killed and go to [hell].” When Veifer asked why, Abu Lebdeh responded, “It’s Palestine’s country, not your country,” before launching into a profanity-laced rant.
Abu Lebdeh further stated that she would refuse to treat Israeli patients and would instead kill them. Nadir, making a threatening gesture, claimed to have already sent many “Israeli dogs” who visited the hospital to Jahannam (Islamic hell).
The comments sparked outrage, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemning the video as “driven by hate and disgusting.” He assured that Australian federal police were offering support to New South Wales, NSW, state police in the investigation.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park confirmed that the nurses, who worked at Bankstown Hospital, were “stood down immediately” pending an inquiry.
“This behavior is vile, disgusting, and appalling. I do not want to leave a sliver of light that allows them to think they will ever work for NSW Health again,” Park stated.
NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce, visibly emotional at a press conference, apologized to the Jewish community.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be standing here, dealing with two NSW health staff making such horrendous remarks,” she said.
NSW Police confirmed that their antisemitism task force is investigating, with the nurses now cooperating with detectives.
Following public outcry, Nadir and Abu Lebdeh attempted to walk back their statements.
Nadir, who immigrated from Afghanistan and became an Australian citizen four years ago, later stated that his comments were meant as a joke.
“Whatever happened, it was just a misunderstanding and a big mistake,” he told The Australian newspaper.
Abu Lebdeh’s family also said she regretted her comments. Her uncle stated she was suffering from anxiety following the backlash and might require medical attention.
The incident comes amid a surge in antisemitic attacks across Australia since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages being taken to Gaza.
Jewish advocacy groups say the threats made by the nurses have deepened community fears.
“The idea that health professionals—who take an oath to do no harm—would threaten to kill Jewish patients should send a shiver down every Australian’s spine,” said Alon Cassuto, CEO of the Zionist Federation of Australia.
Dionne Taylor, an Australian-Israeli activist, warned that Jewish Australians are now hesitant to disclose their identity in hospitals, universities, and public spaces.
“People are talking about whether it’s safe to list their religion when receiving medical care,” she said.
Following the incident, NSW authorities reassured Jewish Australians of their safety in hospitals.
“Those with these views should never be employed in our healthcare system,” they said.

“We must learn to respect those occupying sensitive positions in the country. By doing so, we not only uphold our dignity but also project a positive image of Nigeria to the international community,” Hussein stated.
He lamented that many Nigerians engage in behaviors that undermine the country’s credibility, questioning how foreigners can take Nigeria seriously when its citizens fail to demonstrate responsibility in national affairs.

Hussein criticised activist Omoyele Sowore for making derogatory remarks about President Bola Tinubu, stating, “Sowore’s claim that everything about Tinubu is fraudulent is unacceptable. We should respect our leaders and pray for their success instead of resorting to insults.”
Commending President Tinubu for establishing the North Central Development Commission, Hussein described the move as a strategic step toward fostering regional development. He appealed to the President to include youth representatives in the appointments for regional commissions, ensuring their active participation in governance.
He expressed support for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, praising his leadership and the improvements seen in the Nigerian Police Force since his appointment.
“The IGP has done commendable work, and he deserves the support of all Nigerians. The position of the Inspector General of Police is an appointive role at the discretion of the President, without an age limit. It is crucial for Nigerians to assist security agencies by providing vital information to help combat longstanding security challenges in the country,” Hussein added.
The group also expressed dismay with the former governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, for his recent comments on the President Tinubu-led government, advising him to be mature and constructive in analyzing the current situation in the country.

Among the confirmed hostages, only one is included in the list of 33 captives set for release in the first phase of the ongoing ceasefire-hostage deal.
Since the deal took effect on January 19, Hamas has released 16 Israeli hostages. The terror group continues to hold 73 of the 251 hostages abducted on October 7, 2023, with approximately 30 believed to be alive.
Anat Angrest, mother of 21-year-old captive soldier Matan Angrest, confirmed that her son is alive but held under “harsh conditions.” Angrest was taken from his IDF tank unit at Nahal Oz during the October 7 attacks.
“We received information that he is alive,” Anat told Channel 12, adding that he was abducted with burns and subjected to severe interrogations.
Yosef-Haim Ohana, 24, was also confirmed alive by his family, though concerns remain over his health. Ohana was kidnapped from the Nova music festival while attempting to assist injured partygoers.
“We have a clear indication that he is alive,” said his aunt, Hana Mastronov, to Ynet.
The family of Eitan Mor, a 23-year-old security guard also taken from the Nova festival, confirmed Wednesday that they had received a sign of life. His parents, once opposed to a hostage deal, have softened their stance after witnessing the dire condition of three hostages released over the weekend.
Other hostages whose families recently received updates include twins Gali and Ziv Berman (27), Omri Miran (46), Alon Ohel (24), Nimrod Cohen (20), Eliya Cohen (27), and Elkana Bohbot (34).
Accounts from recently freed captives paint a grim picture of the conditions faced by hostages. Alon Ohel’s mother revealed that her son is chained, starved, and suffering from untreated wounds, including shrapnel damage and a partially blinded eye.
Eliya Cohen’s mother, Sigi Cohen, described horrifying abuse, stating that hostages were gagged, burned, and hung by their feet.
Hamas has so far released 21 hostages—including civilians, female soldiers, and Thai nationals—under the ceasefire deal. An additional 105 hostages were freed during a previous truce in November 2023.
Meanwhile, the IDF continues its efforts to locate and recover hostages. To date, eight hostages have been rescued alive, while 40 bodies have been retrieved, including three mistakenly killed by Israeli troops while trying to escape captivity.
Hamas still holds two Israeli civilians captured in 2014 and 2015, as well as the body of an IDF soldier killed in 2014.
