The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, has invited members of the Council of State and the Police Council to a strategic security meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025.

This was contained in a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, on Monday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the meeting will be held in a hybrid format at the Council Chambers, Aso Villa.

The Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Emanso Umobong, disclosed that the meeting aims to address matters of national importance, including key issues affecting national security and policing.

He added that the session with the Council of State will commence at 1 p.m., followed by the Police Council meeting at 2 p.m.

The statement further explained that members were expected to participate either physically or virtually.

It added that the high-level engagement reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling pressing national challenges and strengthening the country’s security framework.

Lagos State Government has been urged to take decisive and sustainable measures to tackle the persistent flooding that has continued to wreak havoc across the Lekki axis.

The Lekki Chapter of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, NBM, made the call in a statement, lamenting that the recurring floods have destroyed homes, disrupted livelihoods, and slowed economic growth in one of the state’s fastest-developing districts.

Chapter President, Mr Erauyi Agbon-Ifo, emphasized the need for a structured compensation and insurance framework to support households and businesses affected by the annual floods.

He argued that taxpayers deserve fair restitution for their losses, noting that each year, residents lose valuables worth millions of naira to the deluge.

Agbon-Ifo stressed that a long-term solution requires joint efforts between the government, private sector, and community groups, rather than short-term palliative measures.

The group urged the state government to strengthen drainage infrastructure, widen stormwater channels, and ensure regular maintenance of existing systems to prevent blockages. It also pointed to Rivers State as an example of effective flood management despite facing similar coastal and climatic conditions.

The group also called for intensified public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal, flood prevention strategies, and climate adaptation measures to reduce the impact of future floods.

Expressing solidarity with affected families, the Lekki Chapter of NBM reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy until the state government implements concrete and lasting flood control solutions.

The Northern Elders Forum and the Northern Governors Forum have established a new body known as the Northern Nigeria Development Council, NNDC, to coordinate and drive the region’s economic transformation agenda.

The decision followed the signing of the Northern Nigeria Economic Development Charter at the end of the Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialisation Summit, which ended in Abuja on Monday.

NEF Convener, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who signed the communiqué after the summit, pointed out that the proposed council will operate under the joint supervision of the two forums and serve as the institutional framework for implementing the region’s long-term development masterplan.

The communiquè said, “The charter signed by the Northern Governors commits them to establish the NNDC as the dedicated coordinating agency for the region’s economic agenda.”

It further revealed that the NNDC will “serve as the institutional and programme management body to midwife the Regional Integration Agenda of Northern Nigeria.”

It will consolidate strategies in mining, agriculture, power, industrialisation, technology, and related sectors.

The summit, themed “Unlocking Strategic Opportunities in Mining, Agriculture, and Power,” brought together governors, investors, and development partners to explore ways to accelerate growth in the region.

The forum disclosed that over $10bn in investments were pledged across key sectors for implementation over the next five years.

It also emphasised the need for regional economic integration, improved infrastructure, and clear investment policies to attract private capital.

Participants further recommended reforms to ease doing business, standardise public-private partnership frameworks, and institutionalise land administration reforms.

They also proposed the creation of a Security-Investment Coordination Task Force to safeguard critical projects.

The communiqué traced the vision for the new council to the North’s historical industrial base, recalling the 1960s and 1970s when agriculture and agro-processing anchored the region’s economy.

It noted that the new initiative aims to revive that legacy through a modernised, coordinated framework for sustainable growth.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, hosted a visiting delegation from the National Election Board of Ethiopia, NEBE, and the Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations for Elections, CECOE, at its headquarters in Abuja.

The study visit, facilitated by the German Agency for International Development, GIZ, is part of an ongoing exchange of electoral best practices aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in Africa.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, described the visit as an ‘extraordinary engagement,’ noting that it was the first time the Commission would host a joint delegation of both an electoral management body and a civil society coalition from another country.

“This visit is unique because, in the past, we interacted mainly with colleagues from electoral commissions.

“Today, we are hosting not just the National Election Board of Ethiopia, NEBE, led by its Deputy Chairman, Mr. Tesfaye Niwai, but also the Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations for Elections, CECOE, representing over 180 civil society groups,” Yakubu said

The INEC Chairman emphasized the shared values and democratic aspirations between Nigeria and Ethiopia, pointing out similarities in governance structures, diversity management, and election administration.

“Nigeria in West Africa and Ethiopia in East Africa share a lot in common. Both countries are multi-ethnic and multi-religious, operating a federal system of government to manage their diversity.

“With populations exceeding 135 million in Ethiopia and over 220 million in Nigeria, together we account for about a quarter of Africa’s total population,” he noted.

Yakubu also highlighted that both INEC and NEBE share constitutional responsibilities such as the conduct of national and regional elections, registration and regulation of political parties, monitoring of campaign finance, delimitation of constituencies, creation of polling units, and accreditation of election observers and voter education programmes.

Over the course of the one-week study visit, the Ethiopian delegation will participate in nine technical sessions designed to expose them to various aspects of Nigeria’s electoral process.

The sessions will cover topics such as strategic election planning, monitoring and support systems, use of technology in voter registration, inclusivity for displaced persons and Persons with Disabilities, PWDs, candidate nomination, observer accreditation, media engagement, and voter education.

For broader engagement, civil society organisations, media representatives, and the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, have also been invited to participate in specific sessions to encourage cross-learning and stakeholder interaction.

Yakubu further informed the visitors that the study tour coincides with the ongoing voter registration exercise in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, ahead of the Area Council elections slated for February 2026, offering the delegation a firsthand experience of voter registration operations in Nigeria.

“I urge you to freely interact with our officials and other critical stakeholders. We will also take the opportunity to learn from your experiences as we share ours,” he said.

The INEC Chairman expressed appreciation to GIZ for facilitating the engagement and for its continued support of electoral development initiatives across Africa.

The study visit underscores INEC’s growing role as a reference point for electoral management in Africa, promoting regional collaboration, peer learning, and democratic resilience through knowledge exchange and institutional partnerships.
