A former Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Professor Olugbemiro Akerejola, is dead.

Details of his death are not yet available, but his younger brother, Demiloye Akerejola confirmed the passing of the renowned educationist of behalf of the family.

He said, “On behalf of the Eminefo Royal Dynasty, I wish with heavy heart, to confirm and announce the death of Professor Olugbemiro Akerejola.”

Demiloye said the Kogi state born professor died on Monday night at over 80 years.

Nigeria’s flag carrier, Air Peace, has received approval to begin direct flights between Lagos and São Paulo. This marks a significant milestone in bilateral ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

The development was announced following President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brasília, where he met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

At a joint press briefing, Lula confirmed the deal, describing it as an important step in strengthening cooperation between both nations.

“Increasing the direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil is another essential step to strengthen the ties between our societies.

“We have approved the launch of a direct flight, to be operated by Nigeria’s largest airline company, Air Peace, between Lagos and São Paulo.” Lula said.

The agreement was finalized after a two-hour bilateral meeting at the Palácio do Planalto, during which both leaders witnessed the signing of several accords and memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, Nigeria’s aviation minister Festus Keyamo and Brazil’s minister of ports and airports, Silvio Costa Filhos, signed a bilateral air services agreement aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties.

Additional agreements signed during the visit included:

Diplomatic Training and Political Cooperation: Nigeria’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Brazil’s foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, signed deals on diplomatic training and political consultations.

Science and Technology Collaboration: Nigerian innovation minister Geoffrey Nnaji and Brazil’s Luciana Santos signed an MoU covering biotechnology, bioeconomy, ocean science, space development, digital transformation, and raw materials research.

Agricultural and Investment Financing: Managing Director of Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture, Ayo Sotinrin, and Brazil’s BNDES chief, Aluísio Mercadante, sealed a cooperation pact on agricultural financing, trade, and joint investment projects.

Tinubu, who arrived in Brasília on August 25 after a visit to Los Angeles, said the agreements shows Nigeria’s commitment to deepening international partnerships that deliver tangible economic benefits.

The new Lagos–São Paulo route will be Air Peace’s first intercontinental service to South America, expected to boost tourism, cultural exchange, and trade between Africa’s largest economy and Latin America’s biggest market.

Kano-based human rights activist and lawyer, Abba Hikima, has challenged the Kano State Government to address the N6.5 billion diversion allegations with clear evidence rather than outright denial.

Speaking on the controversy, Hikima stressed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration—elected on a campaign of zero tolerance for corruption—must demonstrate its commitment to accountability by either presenting convincing evidence to clear its name or prosecuting those found culpable.

He argued that dismissing the allegations as mere falsehoods or pointing fingers at the previous Ganduje administration was inadequate.

 “We fought against Ganduje’s administration because of corruption allegations. If Abba’s government is now being accused of the same, after promising zero tolerance for corruption, it must defend itself with verifiable facts or take action against those involved,” Hikima said.

The activist outlined specific concerns raised in the case, including: The suspect allegedly admitting guilt in a statement, with some funds already forfeited by court order;  the ICPC reportedly recovering over ₦1 billion from the suspect and depositing it into government recovery accounts.

Also outlined include the public funds allegedly being funneled into a private account before being diverted and claims of illicit foreign currency transactions through Abuja-based Bureau de Change operators, beyond legal limits and without due process.

Hikima maintained that these allegations must be addressed point by point rather than dismissed wholesale.

According to him, opposition parties naturally raise allegations, but it is the government’s responsibility to respond transparently and uphold the integrity of its anti-corruption stance.

“Any government that campaigned on rejecting corruption in all its forms carries the heavy responsibility of addressing such allegations convincingly,” Hikima added.
