Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic, Offa in Kwara State, yesterday, threatened to embark on industrial unrest in the institution over the purported holding of the governing council meetings outside the confines of the polytechnic.
Already, the ASUP of the institution has called for immediate cancellation of the council’s meeting currently holding in Lagos or risk industrial unrest.
THISDAY investigations revealed that the members of the ASUP of the institution have repeatedly kicked against the continuous holding of the governing council board meeting outside the confines of the institution without any positive change.
The union, it was gathered, had claimed that the development has affected the financial burden of the institution in view of the huge amount of funds incurred while holding the meeting outside the Offa community.
However, a statement issued by the ASUP, Federal Polytechnic, Offa branch Chairman, Dr. Idowu Atilola, and made available to journalists in Ilorin yesterday also demanded a letter of apology to the polytechnic community from the governing council.
The statement read: “The attention of the union has been brought to the fixing of council meetings outside the confines of the polytechnic.
“Let it be on record that this conduct was first observed in May and the union sent soft warnings but the management seems to have lost all regards for rules and regulations.
“It is also important to note that the current governing council has conspicuously left matters of staff welfare and the polytechnic’s progress unattended to, they have refused to reply letters of complaints by the union and most unfortunately, they have even refused to give audience to the union on matters of serious concern.”
The letter added: “It would have been expected that Kamoru Kadiri and Waheed Balogun should have guided the council properly (being former union leaders) towards proper conduct but they seem to have chosen a different path.
“The registrar, who is supposed to be an interpreter of rules, has also hypocritically compromised his good stand for personal gains. No wonder Federal Polytechnic Offa has now become a shadow of itself.
“Consequently, the union is demanding an immediate cancellation of the council meeting currently being held in Lagos, and also a letter of apology to the polytechnic community from the council. We will not close our eyes and allow where we earn a living to be destroyed.”
