Anambra Contractors Protest Unpaid N900m Supply of Diesel  to Power Streetlights

David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

A group of contractors in Anambra State who supplied diesel for use in generators for powering streetlights across the state have staged a peaceful protest to the Government House in Awka.

Their protest was over the alleged refusal of the state government to pay outstanding debts amounting to about N900 million for diesel supplied in March and April of 2022. The contractors, who converged on the Government House in Awka, accused the government of making selective payments, alleging that while a few contractors had been settled, many others were being unfairly sidelined without any explanation.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Selective payment is injustice,” the protesters said they had exhausted all official channels to seek redress without any meaningful response from the authorities.

Speaking during the protest, their leader, Hon. Nnaemeka Oraka, claimed that some of their colleagues had died out of frustration since 2022.

He said: “We are 72 contractors, but only seven have been paid. We don’t understand the criteria for this selective payment. We followed due process and executed legitimate jobs for the government. Yet, we’ve been abandoned.

“We funded these supplies from our pockets. It was like giving the government a loan. We have families, we owe banks, and some of us have lost everything. Some of our members have even died due to the stress.”

He said several letters had been written to relevant government agencies to no avail, adding that the protest was a last resort.

The aggrieved contractors—many of them members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-declared their continued support for the party and Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s reelection  project, but lamented that the unpaid debts had pushed their families into hardship.

The protesters, including both men and women, marched from Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square to the New Government House.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, who received the protesters, commended them for being peaceful in the protest, assuring them that the government was not insensitive to their plight.

“I want to assure you that your concerns have been heard. His Excellency is committed to resolving this issue. Your matter has moved to another table from the last time you visited, for attention. We will resolve your case amicably after a review,” Ezeajughi said.

He asked the contractors to nominate three or four representatives for a follow-up meeting aimed at reaching an amicable resolution.

While the contractors welcomed the assurance, they said they would continue to press for full payment if no concrete action is taken soon.

The TIME Magazine has named Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, among its list of 100 most influential persons in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This was contained in a press statement signed and issued on Thursday by Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the minister, Mr. Isime Esene.

According to the statement, “TIME has named Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, to the 2025 TIME100 AI, a list recognising the 100 most influential people in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“To assemble the list, TIME’s editors and reporters examined the key stories in AI over the past year and consulted with expert sources and industry leaders for recommendations.

“The result is a list of 100 leaders, innovators, shapers, and thinkers who have a stake in the future of AI.

“Dr. Tijani’s inclusion on the prestigious list reflects Nigeria’s growing leadership in advancing Artificial Intelligence for inclusive and sustainable development.

“From the National AI Strategy (NAIS), where the Ministry got over 120 experts of Nigerian descent to co-create the long term strategy for the responsible use and development of AI; to research and demonstration initiatives showing the potential and practical use cases for AI in critical sectors like healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion.”

The statement said Tijani’s recognition was made possible through the support of partners.

Commenting, the minister said, “With the support of partners like Google, the Gates Foundation, and others, Nigeria is facilitating the scaling of mature AI solutions from local innovators, providing resources, mentorship, and support necessary to translate ideas into impact.

“This recognition from TIME further validates our belief that Nigeria can stand as a global leader in the responsible and inclusive deployment of AI for increased productivity.

“As we continue on this journey, my commitment remains clear: to ensure AI not only drives innovation, but also contributes to building a $1trillion economy as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, justified his frequent trips overseas, assuring Nigerians that all his diplomatic engagements with foreign nations were driven by urgent need to secure opportunities that stimulate economic growth, generate employment, and promote lasting prosperity for the Nigerian people.

In a message on his verified X handle, @PBAT, shortly after returning to Abuja from engagements in Japan and Brazil, the president said he remained fully committed to the mandate Nigerians gave him in 2023, the mission of restoring Nigeria’s pride and dignity on the global stage.

He stated that during his visit to Japan for TICAD9, the delegation he led strengthened relationships that were set to attract new investments in industry, technology, and human capital development.

President Tinubu further revealed that in Brazil, the Nigerian government advanced partnerships in trade, agriculture, aviation, and finance, while also engaging with business leaders to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

His words: “It feels good to be back home in Nigeria after our recent engagements in Japan and Brazil.

“In 2023, you entrusted me with the responsibility of restoring our pride and dignity on the global stage, and I remain fully committed to that mission.

“Every handshake, every agreement, and every meeting is guided by one goal: to secure opportunities that translate into growth, jobs, and prosperity for Nigerians.

“In Japan, we deepened ties that will bring new investments in industry, technology, and human capital. In Brazil, we advanced partnerships in trade, agriculture, aviation, and finance, while also engaging with our own business leaders to strengthen confidence in our economy.”

Tinubu stressed that his administration was determined to build a Nigeria that would be confident abroad and resilient at home, and anchored on reforms that would endure beyond the present leadership.

He vowed that his government would continue to create value for every citizen while noting that Diaspora Nigerians  also remained central to his administration’s agenda.

His words: “This is the new Nigeria we are building together, a Nigeria built on sustainable reforms that will outlast us rather than one built on rhetoric.

“A Nigeria that is confident abroad, resilient at home, and determined to create value for every citizen, at home and in the diaspora.

“The journey is not without challenges, but with unity of purpose and courage to reform. I firmly believe the best is on the horizon,” the president explained.

The president concluded the message with prayer for the nation, saying, “God bless our dear country, Nigeria.”
