Abia Assembly intervenes to curb incessant accident around Aba school

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Ministry of Works, the Abia State Universal Education Board, ASUBEB, and other relevant authorities to prioritise Osusu Road Community Primary and Secondary School in the reconstruction of schools in the state.

The Assembly stated that doing so would protect the pupils of the school from the incessant accidents occurring in front of the school.

The resolution followed a matter of urgent public importance brought before the House by the Member representing Aba North State Constituency, Sir Aaron Uzodike, regarding the frequent accidents in front of the school. He lamented that some school pupils had been injured by reckless drivers plying the road.

He called for the construction of speed breakers near the school, as well as a perimeter fence. Additionally, he called for building of more classrooms to accommodate the growing school population, which has been driven by the free education policy in public schools.

Uzodike’s motion also followed a protest staged by pupils of Osusu Road Community Primary and Secondary School against the recurring accidents in front of their school.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Rape, Defilement, and Domestic Violence Bill, 2024, sponsored by the member for Isiala Ngwa South, Rowland Dennis, has passed its second reading and has been committed to a joint committee on Women’s Affairs and Health to conduct a public hearing.

According to the sponsor, the bill seeks, among other objectives, to provide the legal framework and necessary defence and protection, including psychological, medical, social, and legal support for victims of rape, defilement, and domestic violence.
