Speaking after inspecting the project with President John Dramani Mahama, the minister stated that the outstanding certificates that had led to delays have now been fully paid.
“In excess of US$77 million. So as of today, we don’t owe the contractor a penny; every certificate raised, which was outstanding before we came to power, based upon which they abandoned the site, we have paid fully,” Mr Agbodza stated.
He expressed confidence that with the financial bottleneck cleared, work on the critical highway should progress without further interruption.
During the tour, President Mahama urged the contractor to speed up construction, warning that excuses for delay would not be entertained. “Expedite construction and deliver the project within the stipulated timeline,” he stated.
The President also revealed that the project has now been captured under the government’s Big Push programme. He said GHC14 billion has already been allocated to the initiative this year, with an additional GHC30 billion expected in 2026. “There will be sufficient resources to keep the contractors going.”
The Ofankor–Nsawam road, a vital stretch that links Accra to the Eastern Region and beyond, has been a major source of frustration for commuters due to long delays and stalled works.
