If Obi Picks ADC Presidential Ticket, It’ll Be Tough for APC, Says Ugomuoh

The candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 governorship election in Imo State, Dr. Charles Ugomuoh, has stated that the 2027 presidential election will be a tough one, particularly for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the LP, Mr Peter Obi, emerges the presidential candidate on the platform of the coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Ugomuoh made the declaration during an interview with some select journalists recently.

Responding to the attack on Obi for leaving the LP, Ogumuoh said even though Obi has not left the LP as he is still one leg in the LP and another leg outside, biding his time to know the best place to finally pitch his political tent, it is within his right to choose whichever party he wants to belong to.

“Those who are saying that Obi has gone from one party to the other, have no case because he has that right. The constitution and politics still allow that movement,” he stated.

Commenting on the problem that has bedevilled the LP, the former Assistant Inspector General of Police said Obi’s inroad into the party brought it to national limelight such that top hierarchy of the party have refused to accept the new development.

“The advent of Obi transformed the LP. He became a shining star in the party and that is what is still bothering the party. The top hierarchy of the party has tasted the pie and they now find it difficult to abide by the rules and regulations of the party and even the constitution of the party. When their tenure expired, they went and tried to make a convention to put themselves up in the system,” he stated.

He also commended the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for increasing the minimum wage of the state civil servants to 104,000 from the approved N70,000, insisting that it is sustainable.

Responding to those who argue that the increment is not sustainable, he said the governor must have done his home work very well before taking the step, even as he urged the governor to ensure that it is not just another political statement but a promise that must come to fulfilment.

“For Uzodimma to have come to the point of increasing the minimum wage to N104,000, he must have done his homework and the issue of sustainability shouldn’t come in. He has two years to go, so he has two years to operate it. If he is putting that on the table, it’s good and he should be encouraged.

“Honestly speaking, it’s magnanimous enough that he’s putting that on the table, but the important thing is that the people should be paid. So we have one year and a second year, to see if he can.

“But mind you, the level of our currency, even after a year or two, is supposed to go higher, because we need a living wage for the people. You can’t tell me, with the increased budgetary allocations here and there that it is not sustainable. It’s sustainable,” he stated.

He lamented that politicians have weaponized poverty against the citizenry such that voters are more interested in the peanuts and crumbs from the politicians’ table than their future. 

“People must know that service matters more than the peanuts they get as stomach infrastructure today because you have children that will grow. You have to build infrastructure. You have to build human capital development. Your schools have to be equipped. Your hospitals have to be equipped,” he stated.

He also stressed that the issue of irregular migration or ‘japa’ syndrome would fizzle out and the people’s livelihood would improve once leaders think about the people they lead. 

“The issue of ‘japa’ syndrome is wrong. Things need to be done the right way. If things are done the right way, and there are positions for people, there is employment for people, people are sure of getting a job after graduation and they are sure of their daily bread, things will change. People will not become so hungry and beggarly,” he concluded.

Shettima Pledges Enhanced Military Operations Against Terrorists

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Borno State over the recent terrorist attack that claimed many lives in Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area.

He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Armed Forces to review security operations, including the deployment of advanced military hardware and surveillance equipment to eliminate terrorist groups across the country.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, had on Saturday visited Darajamal community to condole the families of the victims — including civilians and soldiers — killed by Boko Haram insurgents on Friday night.

In his condolence message on Monday, Shettima described the incident as a profound loss to both the state and the nation.

According to him, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots. These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families.”

The vice-president expressed confidence in the Armed Forces’ capacity to overcome the security challenges facing the state, citing President Tinubu’s approval for the acquisition of additional drones and his directive for all security agencies to intensify and review their operational strategies.

Shettima highlighted the Federal Government’s consideration of establishing state police, emphasizing President Tinubu’s position that security challenges in some Nigerian states require specialized units that understand the local terrain, culture and can effectively network at the grassroots level.

He offered prayers for the bereaved families and assured both the state government and affected families of continued Federal Government support in addressing the security situation.

The founder and presiding bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr. Mike Okonkwo, has been described as a national treasure worthy of celebration because his life has been a blessing far beyond the pulpit.

Governor Dapo Abiodun made this known at the thanksgiving service for the 80th birthday celebration of Bishop Okonkwo, held at the TREM national headquarters in Gbagada, Lagos.

Governor Abiodun, represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, noted that the celebration of this unique milestone in the life of the man of God is a demonstration of the respect that is not only accorded to spiritual fathers in the state but also to an elder statesman who embodies outstanding personality, courage, and impeccable character.

He added that the celebrant is an icon, a father in faith, a bridge builder, and a true servant of God, with proof of a life lived purposefully, faithfully, and impactfully.

“Today, we celebrate his age and the remarkable legacy he has built. Bishop Okonkwo’s contributions to faith and community development echo across generations. Through The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, he has built more than churches; he has built people, raised leaders, and fostered hope across generations. His voice has consistently championed integrity, unity, and righteousness in a nation in need of such a moral compass,” Gov. Abiodun said.

Prince Abiodun reiterated that the programs under the leadership of Bishop Okonkwo have uplifted the underserved, offered hope to the hopeless, and provided opportunities for countless individuals to realize their potential. He added that his commitment to the spiritual and physical well-being of the communities is a testament to his character and love for humanity.

He therefore promised continuous support, recognition, and identification with notable philanthropists for their invaluable contributions to the continued growth and development of humanity and the successful implementation of the “Building Our Future Together” agenda of his administration.

Governor Abiodun enjoined Nigerians to learn to appreciate those who have genuinely contributed to the growth and development of society while they are still alive.

In his sermon, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, urged the congregation to emulate Bishop Okonkwo in diligence in their service to God.

He said that any diligent man will stand before kings and not mean men.

Pastor Adeboye noted that for any man to reach the top, he must be diligent in hearing the word of God, prayer, worship, and in holiness.

He thereafter prayed for the celebrant, his family, and the church as a whole.

There was an outpouring of goodwill messages from notably great men of God, among whom was the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Wale Oke.

In his response, the octogenarian celebrant, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, appreciated Prince Dapo Abiodun, the God Generals, his family, and the entire Tremites who came to celebrate him on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
