The Abia State House of Assembly says it will embark on a peaceful march to Abuja to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The plan comes after the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved on Tuesday by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Austin Mmeregini, during plenary.

The Assembly urged the Federal Government to grant Kanu release on medical grounds.

DAILY POST recalls that Otti had, during a recent project commissioning in Abia, responded to an appeal by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for Kanu’s release, assuring that he and his counterparts in the South-East were making concerted efforts to secure the IPOB leader’s freedom.

The Assembly Deputy Speaker, who represents Umuahia East Constituency, expressed concern over Kanu’s deteriorating health condition and appealed to the House to support the governor’s ongoing efforts.

He equally called on the members of the National Assembly from the South-East and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership to double advocacy for Kanu’s medical care and unconditional release.

On his part, the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Mr Isiehi Boniface, proposed that the Abia Assembly should visit the National Assembly to meet with the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives over the matter, after which a press conference would be held.

In his contribution, Kalu Nwoke, representing Ohafia South, lamented that the continued detention of Kanu had worsened insecurity in parts of Ohafia, despite Otti’s efforts to restore peace.

Also speaking, the Speaker of the House, Emmanuel Emeruwa, criticised the Federal Government’s continued detention of Kanu despite a valid court order granting him release.

“Going by the law, Nigeria appears to be operating two systems of justice. Having been granted bail by the court, the government should obey that order.

“Most of us agree that the continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu is out of the ordinary and against the rule of law, unless there is something the public does not know. We can only urge the President to show mercy and grant his release.

“It would be of no use for Nnamdi Kanu to die in detention. He has not been convicted, and his offence is not unbailable. Every citizen deserves their fundamental human rights, and the government must respect that,” he said.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun Adeolu, has charged the newly recruited 370 constables from the Police Training School (PTS), Minna, Niger State, to shun corruption, avoid abuse of power, and uphold the rule of law in the discharge of their duties.

IGP Adeolu gave the charge during the Passing Out Parade (POP) of the new constables at the Niger State Police Training School, Minna.

According to him, “You must always remember that the uniform you wear represents authority, sacrifice, and responsibility. Uphold integrity in all your dealings, respect the rights and dignity of all citizens, and remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 7 Abuja, AIG Victor Olaiya, the IGP noted that the 370 constables, drawn from various parts of the country, were part of ongoing efforts by the Force to strengthen manpower capacity and enhance policing nationwide.

He charged the recruits to see themselves as ambassadors of integrity, discipline, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Adeolu further reminded the officers that the trust and confidence of the people must be earned through fairness, accountability, and service with compassion, adding that his leadership remains committed to reforms, improved welfare, and continuous training aimed at producing a professional and people-friendly police institution.

The IGP also commended the Niger State Government for its continuous support to the training school, particularly in the provision of two solar-powered boreholes and operational assistance to the command, while calling on community members to strengthen partnerships with the police to ensure a safer society.

Also speaking, the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouk Bahago, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Bosso, urged the graduands to uphold the rule of law in the communities where they will be posted.

He further called on the Inspector General of Police to look into issues of pension, gratuity, and welfare of officers and men of the Force in order to motivate them to adequately discharge their duties to citizens.

Earlier, the Commandant of PTS Minna, ACP Yunusa Isah Wakali, explained that a total of 370 graduating constables reported for training on April 12, 2025. They comprised 235 drawn from the 25 LGAs of Niger State, 59 from the FCT, Abuja, 2 from Jigawa, 37 from Katsina, 11 from Kano, and 26 from Kaduna.

He admonished them, “Be steadfast in your career and let your decisions be informed by the guiding principles of the Force to avoid being sanctioned.”

Wakali, however, called on the Police Authority to come to the aid of the school by constructing a standard modern parade ground, renovating lecture halls, hostels, and other facilities to augment the existing ones.

When asked what was different in President Tinubu’s independence day speech from the previous the previous ones, the legal practitioner said, “Let’s first of all agree that it’s a truism that not just the young ones but nobody looked forward to president Tinubu’s speech.

“I listened to it because I’m a public affairs analyst. People will question me on it, otherwise, I would not have listened to it. And why would people listen to propaganda?

“In those days, our leaders told us the truths, but Tinubu has used two years of his regime because he said it’s his third address. And this is to give us propaganda.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has urged the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, to surrender himself to police.

Effiong stated this in a post on his X handle on Tuesday.

“These were my final thoughts last night while featuring on Channels TV on the certificate forgery scandal involving Mr. Uche Nnaji, who has just resigned as Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. He should surrender himself to the police,” he said.

The development comes after the Presidency announced that Nnaji had resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s government.

The presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Onanuga, the minister resigned today in a letter, thanking Tinubu for allowing him to serve Nigeria.

Nnaji, according to Onanuga, claimed that he had been a target of blackmail by political opponents.

Onanuga said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him.”

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, not to allow market women politics to distract them from the work they were elected to do for Nigerians and Edo people.

DAILY POST reports that the Benin monarch made the appeal in a statement by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), which was made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Benin City.

The statement was signed by Chief Norense Ozigbo-Esere, the Osuma of Benin; Chief Osaro Idah, Obazelu of Benin; Chief Okunoghae Edomwandagbon, Ine of Benin; Chief Edionwe Oliha, Oliha of Benin; Chief Ada Igbinovia, Eribo of Benin; and Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.

The monarch’s appeal was in reaction to the controversial inauguration of Pastor Josephine Ivbaguezejele as Iyeki, the market woman leader in the state, by Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu, on October 2, 2025, at the Edo State Government House.

He noted that the Palace had for some time observed that markets have become a veritable tool in the hands of partisan politicians and unscrupulous individuals who use them for personal benefit.

The royal father opined that the practice of using associations in negative ways in the markets has also contributed immensely to the rise in food prices, thereby seriously impacting the efforts of Mr. President to bring food prices down.

“This situation has persisted since even long before the present administration. While the Palace takes a dim view of such an alien concept of ‘Iyaloja’ being introduced into the market system of Edo culture, it is also pertinent to point out that the Palace has serious reservations about the tendency of market women allowing themselves to be used as political pawns in the political field under the aegis of market associations in Edo State.

“The Palace has received numerous complaints that the practice of using associations in negative ways in the markets has also contributed immensely to the rise in prices of foodstuffs, thereby seriously impacting the efforts of Mr. President to bring food prices down.

“While the Palace maintains its position that the ‘Iyaloja’ concept is alien to the culture of Benin, the Palace also frowns at the use of trade associations to run open markets and to play partisan politics.

“These twin factors are antithetical and inimical to the essence of our market tradition in Benin culture,” he said.

The Oba also appealed to the market women and the politicians behind them to desist from dragging the sanctity of the name of the Oba into their partisan political affairs.

“We hear comments such as ‘the Oba’s word is final’ in this Iyaloja saga, but did the market women respect and observe this in previous administrations when they allowed themselves to be used as political pawns?

“While stating that there is nothing like ‘Iyeki General’ in Benin, which the Iyaloja concept seems to imply, he stressed that in Benin culture, the Iyeki emerges from among the market women.

“He further stated that after being chosen by the women, the Iyeki is brought to the Palace for confirmation, and once confirmed, she is thereafter installed as the Iyeki of the market.

“The traditional ruler, who likened the process of installing an Iyeki to that of an Odionwere of a village, declared that the Palace never chooses anybody as Iyeki for the market women.

“The Palace never chooses anybody as Iyeki. It is the market women that do that. Every Iyeki is independent of each other. Every Iyeki is culturally, spiritually, and religiously tied to the Palace.

“There is a direct functional relationship between the Iyeki and the Palace.

“Just as there is no honorary chieftaincy title in Benin culture, so also there is no honorary Iyeki title in Benin culture.

“Every Iyeki has a spiritual function she performs for the Palace and for the well-being of the market,” he added.

He, however, advised that the function of the Iyeki should not be politicized, noting that any deviation from this age-old cultural system may lead to a breach of peace.

“It behoves the Benin Traditional Council to advise the State Government to please take cognizance of this and avoid a breakdown of law and order,” he stated.
