Technical Education Key to Industrial Revolution, Says Kogi Poly Rector

The importance of technical education cannot be overemphasised, as it is crucial to ignite the industrial revolution in the country.
The Rectory of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Usman Salisu, disclosed this while speaking at the Stewardship Forum organised by the Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kogi State Council in Lokoja yesterday.
Salisu explained that as part of efforts to provide the technical gap in the country today, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic has upgraded the Entrepreneurship Development Centre to a full directorate.
According to him, “The move is in a bid to equip students in skill acquisitions and explore new programmes, adding that apart from certificates earned from academic activities, it is now compulsory for all students of the institution to acquire at least a skill which will allow them to become self-reliant and not seek non-existent white collars jobs.”
He pointed out that the new directorate is also to train the artisans who want to acquire technical skills to aid their area of specialisation.
The rector disclosed that in Kogi State Polytechnic, four programmes are already running in the institution, and all students have been made to register for at least one, which will be certificated at the end of the skill acquisition programme.
“Successful accreditation and re-accreditation of 47 programmes by the National Board for Technical Education (including the backlogs of some dated as far back as 2009.
“Establishment and accreditation of the School of Agricultural Technology at Itakpe with four programmes; namely Agricultural Technology, Animal Health and Production Technology, Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Technology, and Horticulture and Landscape Technology.
The constitution of the Academic Board Central Results Verification Committee, leading to proper scrutiny of results, cost effectiveness, and reduction in time wastage at the Academic Board meetings.
“Introduction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the conduct of the General Studies and other examinations with large classes, which has curbed unethical practices and ensured prompt release of results,” the rector posited.

Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging global partnerships to modernize agriculture and enhance food security.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Muhammad Gumel, stated this in a press statement issued to DAILY POST on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the Governor disclosed this in Senegal when he led a high-powered delegation to the Africa Food Systems Summit in Dakar to explore new agricultural partnerships aimed at transforming the state’s food systems and driving inclusive economic growth.
He explained that agriculture is a central pillar of his administration’s 12-Point Agenda under the vision of building “a Greater Jigawa.”
“Jigawa is already Nigeria’s leading producer of wheat, rice, sesame, and hibiscus flower,” Namadi said.
“We will continue to build on these achievements and utilize the full potential of our vast arable land and resilient farming population.”
The statement said that during the summit, Governor Namadi met with Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn, Chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), on ways of strengthening collaboration between Jigawa and AGRA.
The discussions focused on practical strategies to boost productivity, strengthen market access, and improve the competitiveness of rice and wheat farmers.
The summit, which runs from September 1 to 4, 2025, brings together leaders, development partners, and private sector stakeholders from across Africa to deliberate on building resilient and sustainable food systems.

Ladoja noted that he was unable to attend the university because he wanted to study technology when he sought admission for higher education.
The former governor of Oyo State maintained that he did not have the privilege of attending the university because the Faculty of Technology had not been established in 1966 when he sought admission for higher education.
Ladoja made these revelations when the principal officers of the university paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday.
DAILY POST reports that the delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kayode Adebowale.
The former governor, while addressing the gathering, noted that despite the proliferation of universities in the country, the university has maintained its position as the best in the country.
He also maintained that the institution remains the pride of the academia and the people of Ibadan in particular.
Ladoja also enjoined the institution to harness the strength of other research institutes in the ancient city.
He added that this will help to facilitate the fulfilment of its mandate and for the betterment of the people of the ancient city.
Adebowale, while speaking, reiterated that the university owes its existence to the generosity of the Ibadan people, which depicts the hospitality for which Ibadan is well known.
He assured that the university will continue to partner with the people of the ancient city in all areas of human endeavours.

The Taraba State Bureau for Local Government, Traditions and Chieftaincy Affairs on Wednesday issued a warning against the unauthorized conferment of traditional titles across the state.
Speaking at a press conference held in Jalingo, the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau, Engineer Godfrey Dame Andrew, disclosed that some individuals have been illegally touring local government areas, conferring traditional chieftaincy titles on their associates and falsely claiming to have the Bureau’s backing.
Describing the actions as “false and mischievous,” Andrew emphasized that the Bureau has not authorized any such activities and remains fully committed to enforcing the laws governing traditional leadership in the state.
“For clarity, the only traditional titles recognized by law in Taraba State are ‘Chief’ and ‘Emir’,” he stated.
Andrew further explained that the state does not recognize any tribal or ethnic councils. Rather, the officially recognized structure includes only the Traditional Council and the Emirate Council, both led by graded Chiefs and Emirs appointed through established hereditary processes.
He noted that the traditional leadership hierarchy is clearly defined, beginning with the Chiefdom or Emirate at the top, followed by District Heads, Village Heads, and Ward Heads. He warned that no individual or group has the right to create or assume leadership roles outside this structure.
“The creation of parallel traditional authorities is a direct violation of the law and a threat to the peace and order of our communities.
The Bureau will not recognize any person or group parading themselves as traditional rulers without legal approval. Offenders will be prosecuted,” he cautioned.
The Permanent Secretary urged residents to respect the existing traditional institutions in the areas where they live and warned against actions that could incite division or conflict.
He called for unity and mutual respect among all ethnic groups in Taraba, urging citizens to support the state’s legal traditional framework.
“Let us all uphold the law and work together to maintain peace, order, and stability in our state,” he said.

Plateau State Government has proposed a supplementary budget of N2billion to expand the Plateau Youth Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition (PLAYESA) for Wealth programme, aimed at equipping young people with practical skills in ICT, fashion, and leatherworks.
The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Musa Achom, disclosed this during the flag-off of the current batch of PLAYESA training organised by the State Ministry for Youth and Sports Development in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, at the National Youth Centre, Shere Hills, Jos.
He explained that the fund, once approved by the state House of Assembly, would strengthen youth empowerment initiatives and position Plateau State as a hub for digital technology and the creative industry.
Ashom said: “The training is for young people to acquire skills, because not everyone can get white-collar jobs. In this batch, we have 150 participants, and another 100 will join soon, making a total of 250 youths drawn from the 17 local government areas of Plateau State.”
“At the end of the programme, they will gain ICT, fashion design, shoemaking, and bag production skills, because these are trades people have made fortunes from, and we cannot be left behind.”
He added that the government is intentional about youth development, stressing that empowerment must be deliberate.
“The supplementary budget season is here, and as a ministry, we have requested the House of Assembly to approve ₦2billon so that our young people will be exposed to different skills. In ICT, we want Plateau State to become a hub.
“The state governor has donated the Joseph Gomwalk House to serve as an ICT centre for our youths. The Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy is also laying 30km of fibre optics in the state. So, Plateau State is going to become an ICT hub, and we want our youths to take advantage,” he said.
In her remarks, the Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Deborah Simon Pitmang, noted that the training is strictly focused on skills acquisition under the ‘Skills for Wealth’ scheme.
According to her, “The trade areas have been streamlined into three core areas: ICT, fashion design, and leather works. Our role is strictly to facilitate and train. This is not ‘skills for WhatsApp.’ This programme is meant to give you start-up kits and empower you to create wealth, not to sell the equipment for quick cash.”
Some of the participants described the initiative as a life-changing opportunity, particularly because of its emphasis on practical training and provision of start-up kits.
A trainee said: “This is a very good initiative, and I must applaud the governor. The world is moving digitally, and with the ICT training, it will boost so many things and give us an eye opener on how the ICT world works. When I go back, I’ll do more research and put in more effort to make something out of it for myself.”
Other participants in fashion design and leatherworks also expressed optimism that the programme would enable them to build sustainable livelihoods and empower their families, while commending the government for what they described as a rare and timely intervention in addressing youth unemployment.
The PLAYESA Skills for Wealth programme, launched under Governor Caleb Mutfwang, is designed to train youths across the 17 LGAs of the state in entrepreneurship and vocational skills.
