Leaders of the Ipetumodu community in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State have formally broken their silence on the four-year jail term handed down to the town’s traditional ruler, Oba Joseph Olugbemiga Oloyede, by an American court for fraud.

In an official reaction to the matter, the leaders appealed to the people to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding despite the ordeal of the first-class traditional ruler.

Acting under the aegis of the Ipetumodu Descendants Progressive Union, IDPU, the leaders assured that the American court judgment would be studied at the appropriate time.

Oba Oloyede, a first-class monarch, was convicted in the United States on charges relating to COVID-19 relief fund fraud, having admitted to defrauding the American government of more than four million dollars.

He has since been ordered to repay the money and to forfeit all his properties to the American authorities.

In a public statement issued on Thursday, the National President of the Union, Dr Israel Akinjogbin, assured citizens that the situation remained under control and urged the community not to allow the development to disrupt their daily lives.

According to Dr Akinjogbin, while the news of the monarch’s conviction has come as “an unthinkable” to many, it is important for the people of Ipetumodu to distinguish between the legal proceedings abroad and the peace and order at home.

The union counselled residents to continue to be law-abiding and not to foment trouble, adding that Ipetumodu is always a peaceful town and will not accept anything that may disrupt its longstanding coexistence.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has said it will obtain the Certified True Copy of the US court judgment that sentenced the monarch before making any official statement, stressing that it would not act on social media reports.

The traditional ruler was on Tuesday sentenced to 56 months’ imprisonment by US District Judge Christopher A. Boyko, in addition to forfeiting cash, a house, and other assets to the American government.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has stressed the need for modern techniques to fight crimes that cut across the FCT and neighboring states.
Wike made this known at the 10th G-7 Security Summit held in Abuja on Wednesday, August 28, 2025.

The meeting was convened by the FCT Administration to strengthen security within the capital city and the states around it.

Represented by the Head of Service, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, the Minister explained that criminals are now making use of technology to advance their activities.

He said this makes it necessary for security agencies to adopt new and dynamic methods, including better cooperation and joint operations.

He tasked the G-7 Technical Committee to develop “the most adaptable strategies in combating cross-border crime and criminality” to ensure safety in the FCT and its surrounding states.

According to him, “It is important that our security agencies have access to modern techniques and strategies among which is a joint operation strategy to effectively curtail the forays of criminal elements at all levels.”

He continued, “I therefore charge the members of the Technical Committee of the G-7 States to put on their thinking cap and come up with most adaptable strategies in combating cross-border crimes and criminality and deploy same for the safety and the security of the seat of government of the federal republic of Nigeria and the States contiguous to the FCT.”

Wike also praised the efforts of security operatives, acknowledging their bravery and sacrifices. He assured that government remains committed to providing them with the tools they need to protect lives and property.

Earlier at the summit, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, explained that the G-7 initiative was designed to confront crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, car theft, and human trafficking within the FCT and surrounding states.

He pointed out that these crimes cross boundaries require joint, coordinated action, intelligence sharing, and vigilance.
Adewale expressed confidence that discussions at the summit would lead to practical recommendations to strengthen the G-7 as a strong security platform.

The Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris has approved the appointment of Alhaji Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami as the new Emir of Zuru.

The letter of appointment was on Thursday presented to the new Emir in Zuru by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar Dutsin-Mari on behalf of the state government.

He announced that the new appointment was based on the recommendation of the election committee.

The Commissioner said out of the three candidates that applied for the position and were screened by the Zuru Emirate Emir-ship election committee, Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami got the highest votes to clinch the throne.

He said the appointment of the new Emir was due to the demise of His Royal Highness, late Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sami Gomo II, who passed away on August. 16, 2025 at a London hospital.

Dutsin-Mari thanked the Kebbi State Governor for approving the appointment of the new Emir and urged the new royal father to justify the confidence reposed in him.

In a proactive move to address the surge in cross-border crimes and related security challenges, the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, FCT Command on Thursday hosted an emergency G-7 security meeting at the Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja.

In attendance were the Commissioners of Police of the six states bordering the FCT, State Directors of the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Commandants of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

The G-7 committee represents a robust security architecture that unites the nation’s capital and its six neighboring states including Niger, Kogi, Kaduna, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau, into a coordinated front against cross-border threats.

DAILY POST reports that there have been concerns over cross-border kidnapping, banditry, human and drug trafficking, proliferation of arms, car theft, religious extremism.

The meeting, according to a statement by the spokesperson of the command, Josephine Adeh critically reviewed progress made in combating cross-border crimes and examined both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies necessary to re-strategize and strengthen security responses across the affected states.

At the end of the deliberations, the Commissioners of Police and other security heads reiterated their collective commitment to sustaining proactive and intelligence driven measures that will ensure the safety and security of residents across the FCT and its neighboring states.
