President Bola Tinubu has said he removed the subsidy on fuel to safeguard the future of Nigerians.
Tinubu said he couldn’t allow Nigeria to go bankrupt, hence the need to remove the subsidy on fuel.
He disclosed this during a town hall meeting with the people of Enugu State after inaugurating some of the projects built by Governor Peter Mbah on Saturday.
According to Tinubu: “We must build this house called Nigeria to not just satisfy our immediate need, but our tomorrow too. That’s why the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary. We cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they’re born.”
Tinubu had announced the removal of the subsidy on petrol on May 29, 2023.
His actions led to a hike in the prices of commodities, with some of his critics condemning the policy as not well thought out.

CP Baba Mohammed Azare has been deployed as the new Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State.
The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John who revealed this in a statement in Uyo on Saturday, January 4, 2025, said Azare would be serving as the 34th Commissioner of Police in the state.
She said the new commissioner, an indigene of Azare Katagum LGA of Bauchi State, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Bayero University Kano, a Masters degree in Public Policy and Administration and another Masters degree in Crime Management, Prevention and Control, from the same institution.
The statement said that in 2023, CP Mohammed Azare was redeployed to Akwa Ibom State Command as the DC Operations where he served until his recent promotion to the rank of a Commissioner of Police in December 2024.
The PPRO added that Azare was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, and rose through the ranks.
“Some of the places he has served include all the major Departments of the Nigeria Police Force, such as Administration, Investigation, Operations and Specialised Units,” the statement added.

Governor Bala Mohammed, on Saturday, inaugurated 500 cadets and traffic marshals of the Bauchi State Road Traffic Agency, BAROTA.
Speaking during the passing-out parade of the trained officers on Saturday, the governor cautioned them against indiscipline, corruption, and abuse of power, emphasising the importance of professionalism in their operations.
Governor Mohammed described the newly inducted officers as disciplined and dedicated individuals who represent a new generation of leaders tasked with improving road safety and traffic management in Bauchi State.
“I assure the people of Bauchi State that our dedication to this initiative is unwavering. The cadets and marshals will operate with the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and compassion. Every life saved and every accident prevented will reflect your commitment and dedication,” he said.
The governor lamented the devastating impact of road accidents, traffic congestion, and general disorder on roads in the state, noting that the challenges had necessitated the presentation of the Bauchi Road Traffic Agency Bill to the State House of Assembly in 2020.
DAILY POST reports that after its passage, the governor assented to the bill, officially establishing BAROTA as a legal entity focused on safeguarding lives and improving road safety in the state.
“The establishment of BAROTA was necessitated by the need to address the challenges of road transport, enforce traffic laws, ensure safety, and manage traffic flow effectively,” the governor added.
Mohammed pledged his administration’s full support for BAROTA, promising to provide the necessary resources, infrastructure, and modern technology to enhance the agency’s efficiency.
He further revealed plans to expand the agency’s workforce to 2,000 personnel, adding that the government is committed to youth empowerment and human capital development.
He also assured the cadets of operational autonomy.
To improve BAROTA’s efficiency, the governor directed all 20 local government councils in the state to establish BAROTA offices within their jurisdictions.
He called for collaboration between BAROTA, local governments, and other stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Ministry of Works and Transport, to ensure seamless coordination.
In his remarks, the Director-General of BAROTA, Ahmed Tijjani Baba Gamawa, assured the public that the marshals would operate within the confines of the law. He noted that the training provided to the officers adhered to international standards and global best practices.

According to the statement, the state government has fixed Monday, January 6, for the commencement of the 2024-2025 second-term academic session.
He explained that boarding students will resume on Sunday, January 5, while day students will be in their respective schools on Monday, January 6, for the immediate commencement of normal lessons.
The commissioner appealed to parents to send their wards back to school on the resumption day, as the ministry has provided all the necessary teaching aids to facilitate effective teaching and learning in schools.
He called on teachers to be in their schools and ensure the immediate commencement of lessons.
Professor Chamo added that the ministry will post its staff to monitor the resumption and commencement of lessons in schools across the state.
