The federal government says it never signed any agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this clarification on Thursday, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, insisting that the documents being referenced were merely proposals.
Alausa stated that both the 2009 and 2011 documents often cited by ASUU as binding agreements were never signed, but only proposals presented during negotiations.
The minister also maintained that the administration of President Bola Tinubu was, however, committed to resolving lingering issues with the university lecturers’ union.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa stated.
He dismissed reports that he scheduled a meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment, describing them as inaccurate.

Soludo Can Never Be Distracted

The November 8 gubernatorial election in Anambra State has somewhat provided a platform for a bunch of hopeless wannabes to try to distract Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, from his supercharged governance.
The joy for Anambra people is that Soludo has refused to be distracted as he concentrates on delivering the dividends of democracy instead of concentrating on electoral campaigns.
Thus far, Ndi-Anambra have overwhelmingly endorsed Mr. Governor with Zonal Campaigns which has recharged his APGA base and attracted massive support across party lines – little wonder it’s said that Soludo has no opponents.
The characters touting to be Soludo’s opponents in the forthcoming November 8 governorship elections are what our Igbo people call “achikota ekwe onu” , that is, ill-assorted goods gathered together to be priced for cheap bargain!
Instead of paying them any attention, Governor Soludo is as ever poised in leading the charge of establishing a liveable and prosperous homeland in the shortest possible time.
Ndi-Anambra can only look up to the future with great expectations and assured deliverables as stated in The Soludo Solution: A People’s Manifesto for a Greater Anambra by Mr. Governor: “I have thought through our challenges and the disruptive changes needed to secure the future.”
Of course, to disrupt an old order has never been easy anywhere in the world, but with his re-election readily assured the dream will definitely become a surefire reality.
Some people are set in their old ways, and are poised to do everything possible to preserve the old order but Governor Soludo is armed with the requisite political will to liberate our dear State from the idle dreamers wanting to come in from the back door through “written election results!”
It needs to be recalled that when the Soludo government came in, the State was under siege from the so-called “Unknown Gunmen” but these dreadful hoodlums were quickly sacked via a herculean battle.
With the unceasing support of the military, the police and other security operatives, the eight local government areas that were under captivity by the hoodlums before the government came into office were liberated.
The opponents of Soludo must not be allowed to take us back to Egypt!
With the establishment of Udo-ga-achi and Agunechemba, Anambra has been given all-round security, but the unfortunate opponents of Soludo would want the State to return back to worse than square one!
As the saying goes, to make omelette you have to break the egg.
To drive our disruptive change process, the government put in place a compassionate tax regime to stabilize the government’s revenue at the time that federal allocation buoyed by oil money is dwindling.
The middlemen who used to put government revenue in their own pockets were all weeded out of the system.
With the tax collected, unprecedented numbers of roads are under construction all over Anambra State.
It can be said that the entire state is now a huge construction site, and there is always the inscription at every site: “Your Tax Money is Working for You.”
At the last count, more than 850 kilometres of roads are under construction, serving as arteries of commerce and opening up the food basket zones of the state and the hinterlands.
Because of Soludo, the light of transparency shines forth all over Anambra State. Nothing is being done in an opaque way any longer.
The constructive leadership that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has bestowed on Anambra State is the way to go.
Soludo remains the Solution!
In the forthcoming election, there is hardly any alternative to voting for APGA because Soludo is magic!
Well-meaning Ndi-Anambra will forever march ahead in the APGA way instead of making a backward turn to when Governors were being impeached and kidnapped and made to swear to baleful oaths in dingy shrines!
The APGA way is the Anambra way.
The APGA slogan of “Onye aghana nwanne ya” serves us well – all the time.
The few devious ones around must not define us.
Anambra State is the homeland of hardworking people, and the essence of Soludo is giving service in the Anambra Way.
Bad behaviour is un-Anambra.
Being a bad example anywhere is un-Anambra.
In togetherness, let us be the change we want to see in the spirit of building for keeps the liveable and prosperous Anambra State of Governor Soludo’s Solution Team.
Soludo can never be distracted as he marches boldly into his Second Term!

The Ebonyi government has announced an increment in the minimum wage of state civil servants from N70,000 to N90, 000.
The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe made the disclosure on Thursday, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the state Executive Council, EXCO, meeting.
Omebe explained that the increment was to enhance workers’ welfare, saying that the implementation is with immediate effect and covers all categories of the workforce.
“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare.
“The government has offset the pensions and gratuities of state retirees from its creation in 1996 till date.
“The verification process for retirees in the Local Government Areas has commenced and when completed, the payment will be made,” he said.
He noted that if the government did not play politics with such huge financial obligations, it will not do so with additional N20,000 to workers.
“The governor is a leader, builder of capacity, human beings and infrastructure.
“The government is anchored on the biblical people’s charter of needs mantra which is leading the people according to their needs,” he said.
Omebe disclosed that the EXCO also considered implementation of the eighth-year tenure policy for directors and immediate retirement of those who have served for the period on the same cadre.
“The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” he said.

As a nationwide strike action by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, looms, Nigerians have been urged to prevail on the Federal Government to address the longstanding demands of the lecturers in order to avert the action.
Chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin branch, Dr Alex Akanmu, while making the call on Thursday, listed the outstanding demands of the lecturers to include renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, Sustainable Funding-Revitalizing of Universities, University Autonomy, Outstanding 25-35 percent Salary areas and Third-party deductions, Non-payment and Mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances in Universities.
Speaking on the renegotiation of the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement, Adamu said, “It is public knowledge that our salaries have remained virtually stagnant for the past 16 years, despite the clear understanding that the 2009 re negotiated agreement would be reviewed every three years.
“Unfortunately, it took the government a staggering eight years until 2017, to ever constitute renegotiation committee for this purpose.”
He added that said since then, “successive committees including the Wale Babalakin-led joint committee, the Professor Munzali Jubril-led committee and later the Late Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs led committee, have been set up to engage ASUU.
“The outcome of these engagements, was a draft agreement reached in 2021 between ASUU and the Nimi Briggs led committee.
“However, despite the fact that the committee was appointed by the government itself, government has refused to sign the resulting draft.
“In the spirit of constructive engagement, ASUU, gave the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ample time to address the persistent challenges facing the public universities, but to our dismay, no concrete effort has been made to resolve these issues.”
According to the ASUU chairman, the Federal Government’s continued inaction has further pauperized Nigerian academics in comparison to their global counterparts.
“It is important to stress that ASUU, has not forgotten that all these negotiation efforts initiated by the Federal government itself, have led nowhere, as resulting draft agreements were never implemented.
“A true test of the government’s sincerity now lies in how it handles the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed report, submitted since February 2025, which encapsulates all contentious issues and reflects a consensus with our union.
“Our members are increasingly frustrated with the government’s delay tactics so called ‘keep them talking ‘ syndrome.
“The union is well aware of the planned meeting scheduled for August 28,2025, but the prevailing sentiment among our members is clear, they are no longer willing to be dragged along endlessly without tangible outcomes,” he declared.
Adamu further raised the alarm that the persistent erosion of varsity autonomy by the government continues with alarming impunity.
He said ASUU had opposed the unlawful dissolution of governing councils in public universities, even in instances where no misconduct has been reported and the councils have not completed their statutory tenure.
On the three and half months withheld salaries, as a result of the punitive ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy enforced by the previous administration during the 2023 strike, the union urged the government to promptly clear the outstanding payments in the interest of justice and industrial harmony.

Sports Psychologists Association of Nigeria, SPAN, has advised the National Sports Commission, NSC, to provide dedicated funding for multidisciplinary research on resilience, stress management and mental health in sports.
SPAN noted that this is necessary in order to generate context-specific and sustainable solutions in sector.
The association made this call at the end of its 38th annual conference held at the University of Ibadan.
In a communique signed by its President, Professor Olufemi Adegbesan and Secretary, Dr. Adesola Afuye and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, SPAN maintained that grassroots and school sports programmes should embed resilience education to prepare young athletes for long-term success and holistic development.
DAILY POST reports that the conference which has ‘Psychological Resilience for Sustainable Sports Development in the 21st Century and Beyond’ as the theme was attended by scholars, coaches, athletes, policymakers and stakeholders in sports and education.
A professor of Social Work at the Lead City University, Ibadan Professor Jane Adebusuyi, while delivering the keynote address, emphasised the importance of resilience as a foundation for sustainable sports performance and national development.
The lead papers were presented by Dr. Mary Pindar from University of Maiduguri and Professor Prof J. B. Vipene from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, who provided empirical and theoretical perspectives on resilience-building, athlete welfare and mental health in sports.
The association in the communique reaffirmed its commitment to advancing knowledge, practice and policy on psychological resilience as an indispensable pillar of sports development in Nigeria and globally.
It also advised that coaches, sports psychologists, and administrators must be trained to identify, nurture, and strengthen resilience among athletes at all levels of participation.
The association said, “Psychological resilience is a critical determinant of sustained athletic performance, mental health, and career longevity in sports. National and institutional sports policies should mainstream psychological resilience as a core component of athlete development frameworks.
“Coaches, sports psychologists, and administrators must be trained to identify, nurture, and strengthen resilience among athletes at all levels of participation. Grassroots and school sports programmes should embed resilience education to prepare young athletes for long-term success and holistic development.
“The National Sports Commission should provide dedicated funding for multidisciplinary research on resilience, stress management, and mental health in sports to generate context-specific and sustainable solutions. Sports psychologists should utilize digital tools and emerging technologies to enhance mental training, performance monitoring, and resilience-building strategies.
“Special attention must be given to the resilience needs of female athletes, para-athletes, and marginalized groups, recognizing their unique challenges and promoting inclusivity in sports development. Institutionalized social support networks presented as counseling, mentorship, and peer support systems, should be established to enhance athletes’ coping capacities and overall wellbeing.
“International partnerships should be fostered to share best practices, training models, and cross-cultural insights on resilience for sustainable sports development. All stakeholders must commit to embedding psychological resilience within the broader frameworks of sustainable sports development to ensure holistic growth, competitive excellence, and societal well-being in the 21st century and beyond.”
