Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, has issued a strong warning to traditional rulers, against actions that threaten the state’s peace and progress.
Speaking on Thursday, at a gathering of royal fathers in Jalingo, in commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the state, Kefas decried several activities allegedly carried out by some traditional leaders, including the indiscriminate sale of land, unauthorized issuance of mining consent letters, involvement in illegal mining, and the unregulated conferment of chieftaincy titles.
He also criticized the unchecked appointment of Ardos, some of whom he claimed were contributing to farmer–herder conflicts and collaborating with criminal elements.
“These practices will no longer be tolerated. Any traditional ruler found culpable will face sanctions including suspension, deposition, or prosecution. No one, regardless of status, is above the law of Taraba State. Where the law is silent, I will invoke the doctrine of necessity to protect the people,” the governor said.
The governor also called for a collaborative relationship between the state and traditional institutions, urging royal fathers to support government efforts by maintaining security in their domains, consulting the state before conferring titles or appointing Ardos, and aligning with ongoing development goals.
He further highlighted his administration’s commitment to addressing pressing needs in security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and employment all within available resources.
“Leadership is a sacred trust from God and the people. Abuse of that trust will no longer be tolerated. Let us secure Taraba, let us unite Taraba, and let us move Taraba forward,” Kefas stated.
